What’s actually slowing this PC down?

First check whether the black picture is visible in OBS’s preview, only in YouTube’s player, or limited to one source. If the preview is black, start with the scene and source; if the preview looks normal but YouTube is black or frozen, check OBS’s rendering, encoding, and connection status. This comparison narrows the search but does not, by itself, prove the cause.
Locate where the picture disappears
Compare OBS’s preview with the actual YouTube player, preferably from another device or a trusted viewer.
- OBS preview is black: Check the selected scene, source visibility and order, then follow the troubleshooting steps for that source type.
- OBS preview looks right, but YouTube is black or frozen: Check OBS’s rendering and encoding status, then its connection indicators. The issue may be in performance or delivery rather than scene composition.
- Only one element is black: Treat it as a source-specific problem first. For example, a game capture, media file, camera, or browser source can fail while other scene elements remain visible.
A black picture is not automatically a bitrate problem. If the preview itself is black, changing bitrate is not the first step.
Check the scene and its layers
- Select the scene that is meant to be live.
- In Sources, check that the intended picture source is visible using its eye icon.
- Check the source order. Sources higher in the list appear above lower ones, so an opaque image, color, browser, or other source can cover the picture.
- Hide sources above the expected picture one at a time to find a possible cover. Restore any sources you still need.
- Select the picture source and inspect its bounding box, position, size, and transform. Make sure it is within the scene and not reduced or moved out of view.
If the scene becomes visible after hiding a source, adjust the layering or placement rather than rebuilding the scene.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Fix the source that is actually black
Game Capture
- Confirm that Game Capture targets the intended game or window and uses a capture mode suited to it.
- Some games may require OBS to run as administrator. Some fullscreen games stop rendering to a capture source when you alt-tab; test the game in a windowed or borderless mode if appropriate.
- If Game Capture remains blank, try Window Capture where available. OBS identifies Game Capture as Windows-only; macOS and Linux users should use supported screen or window capture sources instead.
- On a computer with multiple GPUs, check that OBS and the game are using the same high-performance GPU. A mismatch can interfere with capture.
See the OBS Game Capture guide and Game Capture troubleshooting for source-specific details.
Media Source or VLC playlist
- Confirm that the file or playlist still exists at the configured location and opens or plays correctly.
- Check what the source does when playback ends or when it becomes inactive. For a repeating video, check the relevant loop setting: OBS documents Media Source loop as off by default, while VLC Video documents Loop Playlist as on by default. Your actual setting may differ, so inspect it rather than relying on a default.
- Restart or replay the source and observe whether the picture returns. If it turns black at the same point each time, investigate playback ending or source inactivity before changing network settings.
Consult OBS’s Media Sources guide for the available playback controls.

Browser Source
Reload the source or inspect the page and any external content it relies on. This is a practical troubleshooting check, not a guaranteed fix. Browser sources and complex scenes consume system resources, so also consider whether the source is contributing to a performance problem.
Camera or capture card
- Confirm that the camera or capture device is powered, connected, and set to the intended input.
- Check whether another application may be using the device; close that application and recheck OBS.
- If possible, test a different cable, input, or device before concluding the hardware has failed. Consider replacement only when those checks point to a faulty or inadequate input device.
OBS describes video capture sources as inputs for webcams, capture cards, and other devices in its Sources guide.

Display or window capture
Check that the source targets the intended display or window and that the selected capture type is supported by your operating system. Permission requirements can vary by platform; the OBS source guidance identifies available source categories but does not establish a universal permission fix.
When the preview is right but output stutters or goes black
OBS has to use GPU time to composite and render a scene. If OBS reports rendering lag or encoding overload, reduce competing GPU work, simplify the scene, or remove resource-heavy browser sources and filters. If the problem persists, lowering output resolution or frame rate may reduce the workload. A performance warning makes overload worth investigating; it does not prove that overload caused a particular source to go black.

OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide explains rendering and encoding problems. Keep this branch separate from source troubleshooting: a game or file that is already black in the preview needs its own source checks.

OBS describes dropped frames as a sign of an unstable connection to the remote ingest server or an inability to sustain the configured bitrate. Enough dropped frames can disconnect a stream. If OBS’s connection or dropped-frame indicators point to trouble:

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Check whether your upload connection can sustain the configured bitrate.
- Try a wired network connection if available, and check for VPN or security software interference.
- Check that network drivers are current and investigate connection instability.
- As a troubleshooting measure, try reducing the bitrate. Dynamic bitrate can also reduce quality; it is a workaround, not a fix for the underlying connection problem.
Use OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide for further connection checks. Do not treat viewer buffering as proof that the OBS source is black: viewers’ devices, locations, and networks differ, and buffering can occur without OBS reporting dropped frames. OBS discusses this separately in its Streaming Issues guidance.
Keep a 24/7 stream running without leaving OBS on at home
If OBS is working but keeping a computer running is the part you want to avoid, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded content in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It does not stream from a camera.
Each slot streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot without re-encoding or quality tiers. It includes 10 GB of storage per slot, pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. Plans offer the same product; only billing length changes. The first day is free, with no card required, once per account. Billing options are:
- Daily: $0.99 per day
- Weekly: $2.99 per week
