If the meter and recording both go silent, inspect the media files, playlist and audio tracks. If only headphones go silent, investigate monitoring; if the local recording is fine but YouTube is not, check the stream connection and health.
Find where the audio gap occurs
Reproduce a transition between the videos where you hear the problem. In OBS, watch the relevant source’s audio-level indicator in the Audio Mixer, record locally through the transition, and compare the recording with headphone monitoring and the public YouTube stream. The meter indicates whether audio is reaching OBS; comparing it with a recording and stream helps separate a playback-source issue from monitoring or delivery. This is a diagnostic method, not a guarantee that any one symptom has a single cause. OBS explains its audio mixer indicators.
- The meter falls silent at the boundary: check the end of the outgoing file, the start of the next file, the playlist order, and the selected audio track. Test each file and its audio in OBS individually.
- The meter is active, but headphones are silent: check a local recording or the stream before concluding that viewers hear silence. Monitoring can behave differently from recording or streaming.
- The local recording is continuous, but YouTube has a gap: check OBS’s connection and dropped-frame indicators, then YouTube’s stream health. A network symptom is a reason to investigate delivery, not proof that every audio gap is network-related.
- The gap happens only with particular items: compare those files’ audio tracks and playback behavior with items that transition correctly.
Check the OBS source and playlist
For a multi-video playlist
OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlists. Open its source properties and review the playlist, Loop Playlist, Shuffle Playlist, and Audio Track controls. Enable Loop Playlist if the sequence should repeat; confirm the selected audio track exists and contains sound in every playlist item. If the playlist mixes file types or files with different audio tracks, check each item rather than assuming one track selection works for all. The OBS Media Sources guide documents these controls and the source’s behavior. It also includes a Network caching setting, but does not establish that increasing caching fixes gaps between local files, so do not treat a cache change as a supported remedy for this symptom.
For one file that should replay
If the source is a single supported audio or video file, inspect its Media Source properties and the Loop setting. OBS also has playback-end behavior, including Show nothing when playback ends; that option affects what is shown after playback ends and does not by itself explain an audio gap between separate files. If the files themselves have a pause
Listen to the end and beginning of the files outside the playlist. If there is silence in either file, OBS cannot create audio that is not present. If a multi-file transition remains discontinuous after checking the source and tracks, one practical workaround is to join the material into a continuous media file with the desired transitions already prepared, then test that file in the same OBS setup. This is a production workaround, not a gapless-transition feature promised by OBS.
Confirm the repair before going live
- Record locally through the transition. Start an OBS recording, let the outgoing and incoming videos play, then stop and listen around the boundary. OBS’s recording helps establish whether the issue is already present before stream delivery.
- Use the meter and recording together. If both show silence, return to the source files, playlist and audio-track selection. If the meter is active but the recording is silent, inspect OBS audio routing and recording configuration.
- Compare monitoring separately. If the recording contains continuous audio but headphones do not, check the monitoring setup rather than changing the media files immediately.
- Check the live path only when evidence points there. If the recording is clean but viewers hear gaps, review OBS connection and dropped-frame symptoms and YouTube stream health. OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide covers dropped frames and intermittent disconnections related to the connection to the ingest server or difficulty sustaining bitrate; it does not say every audio interruption has that cause.
What older OBS reports can—and cannot—tell you
Two OBS reports from 2020 are useful as examples of why source playback and monitoring should be checked separately, but they are not evidence of a current universal bug. One report concerned a VLC playlist alternating video and audio files in OBS 25.0.8 / 26.0.0-rc1 and was closed as not planned: OBS issue #3410. Another described audio cut short near a playlist clip’s end while monitoring in OBS 26.0.2; its reporter said streaming and recording were unaffected: OBS issue #3712. These version-specific reports justify testing mixed media and monitoring independently, not assuming current versions share the same behavior.
