These are separate steps: scheduling creates the event and watch page, but does not by itself start your computer, open OBS, or begin playback at the scheduled time. For YouTube’s documented manual workflow, start OBS, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then click Go live.
What scheduling does—and does not do
Scheduling in YouTube Studio creates an upcoming broadcast that viewers can find, share, and set reminders for. OBS supplies the video and audio as an encoder. The two functions must be connected, and the computer running OBS must be on and ready unless you have separately configured and verified automation.
The official guidance describes YouTube event scheduling and OBS media playback as separate functions. It does not document a built-in OBS wall-clock scheduler that wakes your computer, launches OBS, and starts a selected file at a future time. Do not assume the scheduled event alone will start playback.
Schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and choose Create → Go Live.
- Open Manage and choose Schedule stream. Create a new event or reuse settings.
- Set the event title, description, visibility, audience settings, and scheduled time. Confirm the time zone and date before saving.
- Use the upcoming watch page to share the event URL and invite viewers to set reminders. YouTube notes that scheduling lets creators promote a stream. YouTube’s encoder-streaming guide explains the scheduling workflow.
Connect OBS to the scheduled event
- In the event’s Live Control Room, find the encoder connection details.
- In OBS, choose YouTube as the streaming service if available, then connect the account or enter the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio in the corresponding fields.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or send it to anyone who does not need access.
- Verify that OBS is connected to the intended event before going live. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe copying the server URL and stream key into an encoder; OBS’s overview covers its streaming setup.
Add and configure the prerecorded video
For one video file
- In OBS, create or select the scene you want to broadcast.
- In the Sources panel, add a Media Source and choose the video file.
- Confirm the source is visible in the scene and that its audio is audible in the OBS mixer. Check the file path and playback before the event; a moved or unavailable file cannot play.
- Decide whether the file should play once or loop. If you want a continuous broadcast, enable looping and verify the source’s behavior when the scene is hidden or changed.
For a playlist of clips
OBS’s VLC-based Video Source supports a playlist. VLC must be installed for this source type to appear. Add the source, select the files in the intended order, and check its loop and visibility behavior in advance. OBS documents both options in its media sources guide.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check video output and preview before the event
Match OBS output resolution and frame rate to the source material and what the computer can sustain. Higher frame rates, including 60 fps, can put more load on the system than 30 fps. OBS documents output settings and performance considerations in its overview.
- Play the full scene locally and confirm the intended picture, sound, and clip order.
- Check that the video file remains accessible at the scheduled time and that no other scene is selected accidentally.
- Watch OBS’s status and preview once streaming begins; allow time to catch missing audio, a black screen, or an incorrect scene before the public start.
Start the scheduled stream at the right time
Manual launch: the most explicit workflow
- At the event time, open the correct OBS scene and start streaming.
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, wait for the incoming stream preview.
- When the preview is ready and correct, click Go live to make the scheduled broadcast live.
This is the sequence in YouTube’s documented manual encoder workflow: start the encoder, wait for the preview, then choose Go live. See YouTube Help.

Scheduled-event automation: verify every link in the chain
An OBS Project forum guide describes auto-start and auto-stop controls for scheduled YouTube streams, but the exact behavior depends on the broadcast settings. Check the current event’s settings rather than assuming automation is active. Even if YouTube is set to start or stop a scheduled broadcast automatically, the computer and OBS still need to be running with the correct scene and media source. The community guide is at OBS Project’s scheduled-stream guide; interface details may change.
If you need the entire setup unattended, separately verify how the computer will turn on, how OBS will launch, how the correct scene and file will be selected, and how a disconnect will be handled. The cited guidance does not establish the reliability of external computer-scheduling tools.

End the broadcast deliberately
When the program is over, end the stream in YouTube Studio using End Stream, then stop sending encoder content from OBS. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Longer broadcasts should not be assumed to receive the same automatic archive treatment. See YouTube’s streaming guidance.
Troubleshooting common scheduling problems
- The event is scheduled, but no video starts: Scheduling creates the YouTube event; it does not by itself launch OBS or play a file. Start OBS and the media source, or verify each element of your separately configured automation.
- YouTube shows no preview: Confirm OBS is streaming to the correct event and that its server URL and stream key match the event’s encoder details. Check that OBS is actually sending the intended scene.
- The preview appears, but the public stream has not started: In the manual workflow, a preview is not the same as going live. Click Go live in Live Control Room when ready.
- The stream starts on time but shows a black screen or the wrong scene: Check source visibility, scene selection, and whether the media file is still available at its saved path.
- A playlist source is missing in OBS: The VLC-based Video Source requires VLC to be installed. Install it and reopen OBS, then check the source list.
- Playback stutters or the computer struggles: Reduce output resolution or frame rate to a level the machine can sustain. OBS cautions that 60 fps can be more demanding than 30 fps.
- The stream stops unexpectedly: Check whether the computer, OBS, or connection stopped sending content. For any scheduled auto-stop or recovery behavior, verify the active event’s settings instead of inferring them from its schedule.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a prerecorded video to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded video; it does not broadcast a live camera feed.
