Neither ads nor memberships reliably earn more for every always-on YouTube channel. Ads can grow with eligible viewers and ads actually served; memberships bring recurring payments from viewers who join for channel perks. The meaningful comparison is your channel’s creator revenue from each source over the same period—not advertiser CPM versus membership payments.
What the two revenue streams pay for
Live-stream ads
When monetization is enabled for a live stream, YouTube automatically turns on pre-roll and display ads. Mid-roll ads can be automatic or manual. YouTube’s automatic mid-roll settings offer low, medium and high frequency, described as corresponding to lower, medium and higher earnings potential. Manual and scheduled insertions are also available; YouTube lists scheduled intervals of 6, 12, 18, 24 or 30 minutes. These are options for placing ads, not promises that an ad will appear.
YouTube says its ad systems decide which slots receive ads, with the aim of balancing viewer experience, creator earnings and advertiser value. A scheduled or available slot does not guarantee delivery. If a live player is embedded on an external site with auto-start, YouTube says ads are turned off for that playback. See YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.
Channel memberships
Memberships let viewers make recurring monthly payments in return for creator-defined perks, such as members-only badges and emojis. Income depends on how many viewers join, the membership tiers and prices offered, and how long members remain subscribed. Perks also take time and, in some cases, money to provide. YouTube describes memberships as a potential fit for a small but passionate niche community; that is platform guidance, not a guarantee of earnings for a particular channel. What YouTube’s revenue shares do—and do not—tell you
YouTube’s partner earnings guidance states that creators receive 55% of net Watch Page ad revenue under the Watch Page Monetization Module. Under the Commerce Product Module, the stated share is 70% of net revenue from channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers and Super Thanks. These percentages apply to different revenue bases. The higher membership-related share does not establish that memberships earn more: the number of paying members and the amount of ad revenue actually generated can differ substantially. The applicable modules and terms are described in YouTube’s partner earnings overview.
Do not use CPM as a proxy for creator take-home income. YouTube defines CPM as an advertiser-focused ad metric before YouTube’s share, while RPM is creator-focused and reflects reported revenue after revenue share. RPM can include several sources—not just live-stream ads—so a blended RPM figure cannot by itself answer this question. YouTube’s explanation is in Understand ad revenue analytics.

How to compare ads and memberships on your channel
- Choose one reporting period. Use the same start and end dates for both sources, over a period long enough to smooth day-to-day ad variation.
- Isolate live ad revenue. In YouTube Analytics, use the Live filter and the available live-stream and live-replay distinctions to identify the ad revenue you intend to count. Avoid treating blended revenue or a video-wide RPM as live ad earnings.
- Record membership revenue for those dates. Use the membership receipts or reporting that applies to your channel, accounting for the relevant platform share and any applicable transaction or tax treatment in your own records.
- Compare creator revenue on the same basis. Compare the resulting amounts, rather than gross advertiser spend or CPM with gross membership payments.
- Normalize for channel activity and audience. Divide each total by live hours. If you have consistent figures, also compare per 1,000 live viewers or per 1,000 watch hours. Use the same audience measure and date range for both revenue sources.
- Track costs and retention separately. Note membership churn and the time or expense needed to fulfill perks. Recurring payments are not the same as profit, just as a month with high ad revenue may not represent the next one.
This produces a channel-specific comparison. Results can change with audience size and geography, advertiser demand and ad delivery, stream schedule, membership offer and member retention.
How to interpret YouTube’s automatic mid-roll figure
YouTube reported an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour for channels that turned on automatic live mid-roll ads compared with channels that had not. The comparison averaged results across 207 countries in January 2024. It concerns automatic mid-roll use—not ads versus memberships—and is not a causal guarantee or forecast for an individual channel. Treat it as platform-reported context, not as a substitute for measuring your own live ad revenue.
