But a blocked viewer does not translate into a fixed amount of lost income: YouTube does not serve an ad on every view or guarantee that every live ad slot will fill. Total views alone cannot tell you how much revenue blockers have affected.
How an ad blocker can affect stream revenue
For a stream to earn from an ad, several things must line up: the channel and stream must be eligible and monetized, YouTube must decide to serve an ad in an available slot, and the ad must reach the viewer. A blocker can interrupt that last step. YouTube lists ad-blocking software or browser extensions as one possible reason a viewer may not see ads (YouTube Help: “Ads aren’t showing on my video”).
That means blockers can remove ad-serving opportunities, not that every person using one would otherwise have generated an ad impression. YouTube explicitly says live-stream ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads and its systems determine whether an available slot gets one (YouTube Help: Monetize your live stream).
Why 24/7 streaming does not mean ads run continuously
Creators can enable pre-roll, display and mid-roll ads on a live stream. When monetization is on, pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled; mid-rolls can be automatic, scheduled or manual. Those settings create opportunities for ads, but they do not guarantee delivery to every viewer or at every break.

So a stream running all day does not necessarily show ads all day. Views, scheduled breaks, available ad slots and monetized impressions are different things. The official documentation does not publish a dollar amount or percentage of revenue lost per blocked viewer, so applying a fixed loss rate to concurrent viewers, total views or watch time would be misleading.
How to assess the effect on your own channel
- In YouTube Studio, open YouTube Analytics and select the Live filter to review revenue from live streams and their replays. YouTube describes this reporting in its live-stream monetization guidance.
- Focus on the relevant ad revenue data and compare periods that are reasonably similar in audience and ad delivery. Changes in viewers, viewing patterns, eligibility or ad serving can also affect the figures; a before-and-after difference by itself does not prove that ad blockers caused it.
- Do not treat RPM as a direct ad-blocking measure. YouTube says RPM includes multiple revenue sources, including ads, Premium, memberships, Super Chat and Super Stickers. An RPM change alone cannot isolate blocked ads (YouTube Help: Understand ad revenue analytics).
Revenue beyond ads
Ads are one possible income source, not the only one. Depending on eligibility and viewer activity, creators may also earn a share of YouTube Premium fees when Premium subscribers watch their content, and live streams can use channel memberships, Super Chat and Super Stickers. These are separate from whether an ad is delivered to a particular viewer. YouTube outlines the available options in Choose how you want to monetize.

For viewers, YouTube presents allowing ads or subscribing to Premium as ways to support creators; its guidance also says continued ad blocking may result in playback being blocked (Allow ads on videos that you watch). That is YouTube’s viewer-facing policy, not a promise of a particular creator payout.
What YouTube’s mid-roll statistic does—and does not—show
YouTube reports that creators who enabled automatic mid-roll ads saw, on average, over 20% uplift in in-stream ad revenue per hour, measured across 207 countries in January 2024. This is an observational comparison between channels that enabled the feature and those that did not. It is not a measurement of ad-blocker impact, and it should not be used to estimate losses from blocked viewers.
