YouTube does not provide music licenses or guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast. For a do-it-yourself setup, create a stream in YouTube Live Control Room, connect an encoder with the stream URL and key, test the preview, and monitor both stream health and a local recording.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions from the preceding 90 days.
- An encoder, such as streaming software or dedicated hardware, that can send an RTMP/RTMPS feed.
- A computer or encoder device, a dependable upload connection, and enough local storage to record the broadcast.
- A playlist or audio program for which you have the necessary rights in the territories where you intend to stream.
- A static visual or other suitable video feed. YouTube receives a live audiovisual stream, even when the station’s main content is music.
First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so turn it on well before the planned launch rather than waiting until broadcast time.
Clear rights for the Tamil music first
Before building the playlist, identify the recordings and compositions you intend to use, where viewers may access the stream, and whether you will retain or publish an archive. The rights needed depend on the repertoire, use, and jurisdiction; there is no universal license answer for every Tamil station.
YouTube’s live-stream terms put responsibility on the provider to have the necessary rights for live content, including applicable music licensing rights. YouTube also scans live feeds for third-party content. If its systems detect copyrighted material, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. A license by itself may not prevent that interruption: a rights owner may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID.

- Confirm the license covers the specific Tamil recordings and compositions in your repertoire.
- Check that it permits continuous YouTube live streaming in each relevant territory.
- Ask whether it covers archived playback as well as the live feed.
- Confirm the rights owner can allowlist your channel if Content ID claims interrupt an authorized stream.
Do not assume that music being available online, or having permission for ordinary listening or uploads, grants permission for a continuous live radio feed. Resolve the rights for your actual catalog and territories before going live.
Prepare the channel and create a live stream
- Enable live streaming early. Verify the channel and check its live-streaming eligibility. If this is the first time enabling live streaming, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or schedule a live stream. Choose a title, description, visibility, and any other settings appropriate for your station.
- Copy the connection details. In the stream setup, copy the server or stream URL and the stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Do not publish it or show it on screen.
- Keep the stream key private. Enter it only in the encoder’s stream settings. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s live-stream settings before broadcasting again.
Configure and test the encoder
In your encoder, select RTMP or RTMPS as supported, then enter the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264 video and AAC or MP3 audio options for RTMP/RTMPS. Select settings your upload connection can sustain consistently; a setting that works only when nobody else is using the network is not reliable enough for an unattended station.
Choose practical video and audio settings
A music-only station can use a static visual and a modest video resolution, but the audio feed and the complete audiovisual output still need to be tested in your actual setup. As a reference point—not a universal requirement—YouTube currently recommends 3 Mbps H.264 video bitrate for 720p at 30 fps. That recommendation is for the video setting; it does not establish a required bitrate for every station or encoder. Match your chosen resolution and frame rate to YouTube’s current encoder guidance and avoid setting a bitrate beyond what your connection can reliably upload.

Set the encoder’s audio input to the program feed you intend listeners to hear. If you will include presenter links, interviews, or station promos, test microphone levels and transitions as well as the music. A microphone is optional for a music-only broadcast; a USB microphone can help if you plan to record spoken segments.

- Start sending the feed from the encoder while the stream is in preview mode in Live Control Room.
- Confirm YouTube detects the incoming signal and that the preview has both picture and audible, stable audio.
- Listen for clipping, silence, abrupt cuts, or a mismatch between the encoder’s chosen audio source and the station mix.
- Check the stream-health status and correct warnings before making the stream public.
- Start a local recording and verify that the file is actually growing on disk.
- Go live only after those checks pass, then continue monitoring the encoder and Live Control Room.
Plan for continuity and recording
A 24/7 schedule is an operational goal, not a guarantee from YouTube. YouTube recommends testing the encoder, previewing before going live, monitoring stream health and quality, and checking that local archive files are growing. It also recommends upload bandwidth headroom of 20%. Measure the connection under normal shared use, not just in an idle-network speed test; congestion or a network disruption can break the feed.
Do not rely on YouTube’s archive as the station’s only recording. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a local recording and decide in advance how you will preserve programs and handle any restart or session changes. A planned restart may help with archive management, but it is not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback for viewers.

- Monitor encoder output, YouTube stream health, and local recording storage.
- Check available disk space and confirm that the recording file continues to grow during a long broadcast.
- Have a procedure for restoring the encoder or restarting the stream after a disconnection.
- Maintain a realistic backup connectivity plan if a single network failure would take the station off air.
Troubleshoot common launch and uptime problems
You cannot start a live stream
Check that the channel is verified, has no live-stream restriction from the previous 90 days, and has completed live-stream enablement. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
YouTube does not receive the encoder feed
Recheck the server URL and stream key in the encoder, confirm that the encoder is sending over the selected RTMP/RTMPS workflow, and make sure the stream key has not been replaced or exposed. Return to the preview and wait for the incoming signal before starting the public broadcast.

The stream looks unstable or drops
Check stream health and encoder status, then assess whether other devices or users are consuming upload capacity. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Lower the encoder’s bitrate or video settings to a level the connection can sustain, and investigate network interruptions rather than assuming a higher nominal internet plan will fix them.

Audio is missing, distorted, or inconsistent
Verify the selected audio input, encoder meters, and the actual Live Control Room preview. Reduce levels if the signal clips, and test transitions between tracks or spoken segments before resuming a long broadcast.
A copyright warning interrupts authorized music
Stop and identify the detected material and the rights owner’s requirements. Confirm that your permission covers the recording, composition, live YouTube use, and territory. If the rights are valid, contact the rights owner about allowing your channel through Content ID; a license does not necessarily make automated interruption impossible.
The YouTube archive is missing or incomplete
Check the stream duration and your local recording. A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube, so use the local file as the operational archive and plan session handling deliberately.
