Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11First find out which OBS counter is rising: network dropped frames point to the connection between OBS and YouTube; rendering lag points to OBS struggling to compose the scene; and encoding lag means the encoder is falling behind. Each calls for a different fix. Check the counter during a representative test, then follow the matching steps below rather than lowering settings or buying hardware at random.
Identify the kind of frame loss
Check OBS Statistics during a representative test
Open OBS’s Statistics window and note whether network dropped frames, rendering lag, or skipped frames due to encoding lag increases. Menu names and locations can vary by OBS version and operating system. Reproduce the busy portion of the game, including movement and audio, rather than judging performance from an idle scene. YouTube recommends testing with representative motion and audio and monitoring stream health and its messages. Change one setting at a time so you can tell which counter or stream-health signal changes.
- Network dropped frames: OBS says this indicates that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate.
- Rendering lag: OBS may not have enough GPU capacity or resources to compose the scene in time, even if the game itself appears to run well.
- Encoding lag: OBS’s encoder cannot keep up with the selected settings or available system resources.
OBS treats network connection problems and GPU or resource overload as separate issues; the remedy for one may not help the other. See the OBS Project’s stream connection troubleshooting guide and performance troubleshooting guide.
If OBS shows network dropped frames
Test the connection before changing the video setup
- If you are on Wi-Fi, test Ethernet. The OBS Project says, “WiFi may be unstable for streaming,” and recommends a wired connection. Try a cable you already have before buying one. Ethernet can help with Wi-Fi instability, but it cannot fix every problem in the route to YouTube or an ISP-side issue.
- Check upload capacity, then lower bitrate if needed. Run an upload speed test and compare its result with the bitrate set in OBS. OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee: available upload capacity can fluctuate, and other devices or uploads may compete for it. Reduce the OBS video bitrate in measured steps and test again. The connection must sustain the setting reliably, not merely reach it during a speed test.
- Test an available ingest server. If the encoder or platform lets you choose another server, compare it during a test stream. A different route may behave better, but this is not guaranteed.
- Review network-related software and settings. Check whether a VPN, security product, bundled network optimizer, or outdated network driver correlates with the drops. If you suspect security software, temporarily test its effect only as a diagnostic; if it is implicated, add an OBS exception and re-enable protection rather than leaving protection disabled. OBS also documents Bind to IP, Windows-only network optimizations and TCP pacing, and an IPv4-only test. If IPv4-only makes no difference, return to the IPv4/IPv6 default.
- Restart the modem or router, then involve the ISP if necessary. If the problem persists, give your ISP the times of the drops, OBS’s network counter, your bitrate, and the results of your tests. Route congestion or ISP-side changes may be outside your control.
Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
OBS’s dynamic bitrate adjustment can reduce bitrate during congestion, which may keep a connection from dropping frames as readily. It also reduces video quality and does not resolve the underlying network problem. Treat it as mitigation while you investigate, not as a substitute for a stable connection.

If OBS shows rendering or encoding lag
Free up GPU and system resources first
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator. OBS lists this as a possible quick fix for GPU overload.
- Reduce competition from the game. Cap the game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync, and lower demanding in-game graphics settings. A game using all available GPU capacity can leave too little room for OBS to render its scene.
- Simplify the OBS scene. Disable unnecessary sources, demanding filters, and browser sources, then check whether the rendering-lag counter changes.
- Reduce output demands only if needed. Lower OBS output resolution or frame rate if the system still cannot keep up. OBS notes that switching from 60 fps to 30 fps is an option when 60 fps is not working. This can reduce smoothness or image detail, so use it only when the performance indicator points to a rendering or encoding limit.
Lowering output settings is not a network repair. If rendering and encoding remain healthy while the network-dropped-frames counter rises, prioritize the connection and sustainable bitrate instead. OBS’s performance troubleshooting guide covers GPU overload and other resource conflicts.
Check YouTube’s encoder settings against your connection
YouTube’s H.264 recommendations below are ingestion settings, not measurements of the upload speed available at your home or studio. They are recommendations, not guarantees that a particular connection can sustain a stream. The YouTube Help page was accessed on 2026-10-03; the retrieved page did not state a publication year.

| Output | YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
YouTube also lists AV1/H.265 recommendations of 12 Mbps for 1080p60, 10 Mbps for 1080p30, and 6 Mbps for 720p60. Codec availability depends on your encoder and workflow; do not select a codec solely on the assumption that it will fix connection instability.
- YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding.
- Use a frame rate of up to 60 fps.
- Set a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says it should not exceed 4 seconds.
- Run an upload speed test, test with representative movement and audio, and watch stream health and its messages while live.
These figures and settings come from YouTube Help’s Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page. The page’s recommendations can change; use YouTube’s current guidance when configuring an encoder.

When viewers say the stream is lagging
Use the pattern of reports to separate a viewer playback problem from a creator-side stream problem. YouTube’s troubleshooting live streams guidance suggests these distinctions:
- One viewer affected: their device or internet connection is a likely cause. Ask them to try another device or connection.
- Several viewers on the same internet connection: their shared network may be the issue.
- Viewers on different networks report the same problem: investigate the encoder or stream delivery. Check OBS’s encoder output and system load, YouTube dashboard messages, and a local recording if available. Test outbound connection strength and contact your ISP if the evidence points to your connection.
Check the stream from another device and network before changing the creator setup based on a single report.
