Mixxx does not document a direct YouTube Live destination. To broadcast your radio mix on YouTube, use Mixxx for playback, route its audio into an encoder such as OBS Studio, add a still image or visualizer, then send the encoder’s output to YouTube Live using your stream URL and stream key. The exact audio-capture steps depend on your operating system and audio setup.
Can Mixxx stream directly to YouTube?
No—not according to the Mixxx 2.5 manual. Its Live Broadcasting feature sends audio to Shoutcast or Icecast servers, while YouTube’s encoder workflow requires an encoder configured with a YouTube stream URL and key. Mixxx’s manual says it can feed audio directly to Shoutcast and Icecast streaming servers; it does not document YouTube as a destination. See the Mixxx 2.5 Live Broadcasting manual and YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
Choose how Mixxx audio will reach the encoder
| Approach | How it works | When it fits | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local audio capture | Route or capture Mixxx’s audio using an operating-system-supported loopback or audio input, then select that input in the encoder. | You want to send Mixxx audio to YouTube without setting up a separate internet-radio server. | Usually involves fewer services, but the capture device and routing steps vary by operating system and configuration. Confirm the method for your system and encoder. |
| Shoutcast or Icecast server | Configure Mixxx to broadcast to a radio server, then have a compatible encoder take audio from that server and send it to YouTube. | You also need the station’s radio-server stream to be available independently of YouTube. | Requires configuring the radio server as well as YouTube’s encoder path. Check the encoder’s current documentation to confirm how it can ingest the server’s audio; Mixxx documentation alone does not establish that capability or the resulting latency and reliability. |
The local-capture route is a practical bridge to YouTube, not a built-in Mixxx feature. If you use the server route, treat the Mixxx-to-server and server-to-encoder connections as separate links.
Prepare Mixxx and the audio source
For local capture
- Choose an operating-system-supported audio loopback or capture method that exposes Mixxx playback as an input device to your encoder. The precise device name and configuration depend on your OS, audio hardware, permissions, and any routing software you use.
- In Mixxx, select and test the audio output that your capture method is designed to receive. Start representative program audio and confirm that the selected capture input shows activity in the encoder. If the encoder receives silence, check the routing and input selection before moving on.
For a Shoutcast or Icecast broadcast
- In Mixxx, open Preferences → Live Broadcasting. Configure the server type, host, port, login details, and other connection fields using the values provided by your server provider.
- For Icecast, enter a mount point; Mixxx says this field cannot be blank. Put the hostname or IP address in the host field and the port in its separate field—do not enter a complete URL as the host.
- Use Options → Enable Live Broadcasting to start Mixxx’s broadcast to the configured server. Labels can differ between releases or platforms, so consult the manual for your installed version if the path does not match.
- Check that the server accepts the format you configured. Mixxx warns that Shoutcast does not support Ogg Vorbis.
- Configure your chosen encoder to receive audio from the radio server. Verify that the encoder supports the particular server output and format; that detail depends on the encoder and is not established by Mixxx’s manual.

Build the video stream in an encoder
- Open your encoder and select the audio input that receives Mixxx, either the local capture source or the verified radio-server input.
- Add a video source. A still image, station artwork you have rights to use, or a visualizer can provide picture while the radio audio plays. YouTube is receiving an audio-and-video stream; this visual source is configured in the encoder, not in Mixxx.
- Choose a resolution, frame rate, and video bitrate suited to the visual material and your upload connection. For a static radio image, there is no need to use a high video bitrate merely because the audio is a broadcast. YouTube transcodes streams for viewers; consult its current encoder settings table for the chosen codec and resolution.
- Set the encoder to use a supported protocol and codec. YouTube’s current settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, or AV1 video options, along with AAC or MP3 audio; it recommends RTMPS. It also recommends CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval (not exceeding 4 seconds), and up to 60 fps. These are YouTube Help recommendations, not requirements specific to Mixxx; check the live table for your configuration at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- For typical stereo program audio, YouTube Help lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps as recommended advanced audio settings. Set compatible audio values in the encoder and prioritize clean, stable audio over unnecessary video quality.
Connect the encoder to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, create or select a live stream and open its Live Control Room details.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream into the corresponding fields in your encoder. YouTube describes the key as like the stream’s password and address: keep it private, do not publish it, and regenerate it if it is exposed.
- Start the encoder and check the YouTube preview for both picture and sound. Start or confirm the broadcast in YouTube Studio according to the stream workflow you selected.
- Before a public broadcast, test privately or as unlisted where available. Play representative audio and include representative motion if the visual changes. Inspect preview, audio/video quality, and stream health before relying on the setup.
- When finished, stop the broadcast through YouTube Studio and stop the encoder as appropriate. Check YouTube’s current guidance for live-stream archiving behavior and limits rather than assuming how a particular stream will be saved.
Check YouTube eligibility and upload capacity
YouTube’s current eligibility guidance says live streaming requires a verified channel, no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and a streamer who is at least 16. Requirements and account availability can change; confirm them in Get started with live streaming before scheduling a broadcast.
Your connection needs enough sustained upload capacity for the encoder’s total bitrate. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; this is platform advice, not a measurement of your particular connection. Avoid sharing the connection with heavy uploads where possible, test before going live, and monitor stream health during the broadcast. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The encoder shows no Mixxx audio: Confirm Mixxx is playing, the intended capture input is selected, OS audio permissions are allowed, and the loopback or routing configuration sends Mixxx to that input. The exact fix depends on the operating system and routing method.
- Mixxx connects to Icecast or Shoutcast but the encoder gets no station audio: Check that the server is receiving Mixxx audio and that the chosen encoder can ingest that server’s output and format. These are separate connections; a successful Mixxx connection does not by itself confirm encoder input.
- Mixxx cannot connect to Icecast: Check the host and port are in their separate fields, the mount is present, and the credentials match those supplied by the server provider.
- The radio server rejects the configured audio format: Check the server’s supported formats and Mixxx settings. In particular, Mixxx warns that Shoutcast does not support Ogg Vorbis.
- YouTube has no preview after the encoder starts: Recheck the current stream URL, stream key, protocol, and encoder settings in YouTube Studio and the encoder. Make sure the encoder is sending the configured stream.
- The preview is unstable or stream health is poor: Check available outbound bandwidth, reduce the encoder’s total bitrate if necessary, leave upload headroom, and limit competing network use. Test the same representative audio and visuals before returning to a public stream.
- YouTube receives picture but no sound, or sound but no picture: Inspect the encoder’s audio and video sources separately. Confirm that the audio meter responds to Mixxx and that a valid visual source is present in the output scene.
