That lets you adjust, mute, and monitor each independently before sending a single mix to YouTube. Make a rehearsal recording and listen back before going live. Separately, confirm that your music rights cover the live broadcast and any replay: OBS controls cannot grant permission, and YouTube may interrupt a stream when it detects unlicensed third-party content.
Set up separate voice and music sources in OBS
OBS Studio provides source faders, meters, mute buttons, and audio monitoring controls. Use those controls to keep the microphone and music independently adjustable rather than blending them before they reach OBS. This is a practical setup based on OBS’s documented mixer controls, not a claim that one specific hardware arrangement is required.
- Add the presenter microphone. In OBS, add the microphone as an audio input source and select the device the presenter will use.
- Add the music playback. Add the computer or application audio output that carries the prerecorded music. If your operating system or playback software offers a dedicated output, route the music through it so it remains separate from the microphone.
- Check the mixer. Confirm that speaking moves the microphone meter and music playback moves the music meter. Use each source’s fader and mute control to adjust or silence that source without changing the other.
OBS is open-source software under GPLv2 and is described by its project as free for any use, including commercial use, with no watermarks or feature limitations. OBS Project Help Portal
Balance the presenter and prerecorded music
Set levels before adjusting OBS faders
Start with the microphone gain and playback volume at their source: the microphone or physical mixer, operating-system controls, and music application can all affect the signal reaching OBS. OBS recommends starting at the device in question before making final adjustments in its mixer. Then use the OBS faders for the final balance.

Use the meters, but trust your ears
OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide recommends keeping speech in the upper range of yellow and background music in green. Treat those as practical meter guides, not universal loudness targets: signals that appear similarly loud on meters can sound different to a listener. Listen to the mix, especially while the presenter is speaking over the music. Keep speech out of the red region, where clipping can cause distortion.
For a talk format, the presenter should remain easy to understand when music is playing. Lower or mute the music during announcements if needed, and check transitions between speech and music rather than judging only a steady section.

Monitor the signal and make a rehearsal recording
Listen through the source device and through OBS Audio Monitoring so you can compare what is being captured with what OBS is mixing. Headphones are a straightforward way to hear the monitored mix; a physical mixer is optional, not a requirement for the basic OBS workflow.
Record a session as it would normally run, then play the file back before broadcasting. This can reveal an unbalanced mix, an incorrectly routed source, or an issue such as audio appearing on only one channel. OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide, published April 3, 2026, explicitly recommends recording and listening back before going live.

Confirm music rights before broadcasting
Audio routing and music permission are separate problems. YouTube says it scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it identifies a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you to stop using the content; if the content remains, it may interrupt or terminate the stream. A licensed track is not guaranteed to avoid interruption: YouTube advises broadcasters to ask the rights holder to add their channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube: Copyright issues with live streams
YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions put responsibility on the content provider to obtain the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of live content, including applicable music rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. The specific permissions depend on the tracks, territories, rights holders, and whether you retain an archive. Verify that your permission covers both the live broadcast and replay where applicable; a live-use license alone may not cover an archived recording.

Check music sources track by track
- YouTube Audio Library: YouTube describes its Audio Library music and sound effects as copyright-safe, and says those are the only tracks it knows to be copyright-safe. Check each track’s terms: some require attribution, and Creative Commons tracks require credit in the video description. The Audio Library guidance focuses on using music in videos, so do not assume it is blanket clearance for every live radio format or use outside YouTube. YouTube: Use music and sound effects from the Audio Library
- Creator Music: YouTube’s current help pages say Creator Music does not support licensing for live content, and its track-use details exclude live streams. Track availability and supported regions can vary. YouTube: Creator Music FAQ
- Third-party libraries: Do not rely on a “royalty-free” or “copyright-free” label by itself. Check the actual license for live YouTube use, archived replay, territories, attribution, and Content ID handling. YouTube says it cannot vouch for music libraries other than its own Audio Library.
Do not use a test broadcast as proof that you have permission: a rights claim or interruption can happen independently of the quality of your OBS mix.

- The microphone meter does not move: Check that OBS has the intended input device selected, that the device is connected, and that its source-level gain is not turned down or muted.
- The music meter does not move: Confirm that the selected computer or application audio source is capturing the playback output. Check the operating-system and music-application volume, then verify that the music is playing through the output OBS is monitoring.
- Voice or music distorts: Reduce the relevant input level at its device or application first, then adjust the OBS fader. Keep speech from reaching the red region of the meter.
- The music overwhelms speech: Lower the music source in OBS while listening to a normal speaking passage. Check the result in a rehearsal recording rather than relying on meter readings alone.
- Audio is missing from one side: Check source routing and channel configuration, then record and replay a short representative session to verify both left and right channels.
- YouTube warns about or interrupts the stream: Stop using the detected content and follow YouTube’s instructions. Confirm your rights with the owner and, for licensed third-party music, ask whether they can allowlist your channel through Content ID.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a radio-style broadcast that uses uploaded, prerecorded video rather than a live presenter microphone, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube stream running from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos; it does not replace the OBS workflow for mixing a live microphone into the stream.
