To broadcast a prerecorded gaming video repeatedly on YouTube Live, VLC can play the footage, but it is not the part that sends a live feed to YouTube. You need a compatible encoder between VLC and YouTube: loop authorized media in VLC, route its playback into the encoder, enter YouTube’s stream URL and key there, check the preview, then start the broadcast. Exact VLC-to-encoder steps depend on the software versions involved; the current official VLC documentation reviewed here does not establish a reliable, version-specific click path.
If you only want a video to repeat while you watch it on YouTube, use the player’s Loop control instead. That repeats playback for you; it does not create a live stream.
Choose the right kind of loop

Loop a YouTube video for your own viewing
On desktop, right-click the YouTube video player and choose Loop. To repeat a playlist, use the loop control in the playlist box. YouTube also documents a Repeat control for playback on TVs and game consoles. These controls affect playback for the viewer; they do not broadcast the video live. Broadcast a VLC video as a YouTube Live stream
What each part does
- VLC: plays the video or playlist you want to use as the source.
- Encoder: receives that playback and encodes/sends it as a live feed. YouTube describes encoders as a way to stream gameplay and overlays. YouTube Help: encoder live streaming
- YouTube Live: provides the stream URL and stream key the encoder needs to deliver the feed. YouTube Help: set up your encoder
The workflow is therefore not “turn on VLC loop and go live.” VLC handles playback; an encoder handles delivery to YouTube. YouTube’s guidance explains the encoder and ingestion settings, while the official VLC documentation landing page does not confirm a current desktop procedure for routing a looping VLC playlist into an encoder. Preparation and broadcast sequence
- Check access to YouTube Live. YouTube’s help information lists channel verification and no live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days as requirements, and says streamers must be at least 16. Check the current eligibility guidance for your account and region before planning a broadcast. YouTube Help: live streaming requirements
- Prepare the gameplay file or playlist in VLC. Confirm that the media plays correctly and that you have the rights needed to broadcast all of it, including game footage, soundtrack, and any other included material. Set the intended repeat behavior in VLC, using instructions for your installed VLC version; do not assume a particular menu label or command-line flag from a different release.
- Create or configure the live event in YouTube Studio. Open the live-stream setup and obtain the stream URL and stream key for the event. Treat the key like a password: use it only in your encoder, do not publish it, and reset it if it is exposed.
- Connect VLC playback to a compatible encoder. Configure the encoder to receive the VLC video and audio output, then enter YouTube’s stream URL and key in the encoder’s YouTube/server settings. The way to route desktop audio/video varies by operating system, VLC version, and encoder, so follow documentation for those exact versions rather than relying on an unverified universal VLC path.
- Check the encoder output and YouTube preview. Confirm that both picture and sound are present, that the intended footage is playing, and that YouTube has received the feed before starting the event.
- Start the encoder feed and go live in YouTube Studio. Keep VLC and the encoder running for the duration of a local broadcast. If either stops, the feed can end; a looping source does not itself make a computer-based setup continuous or recover automatically.
Rights and Content ID checks
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects content that violates its rules, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate the broadcast. A license does not necessarily prevent an interruption: the rights owner may also need to allowlist your channel through Content ID. For an always-on prerecorded YouTube stream, the practical choice is between keeping a local computer and its playback/encoding setup running, or using a cloud service that handles playback and delivery. Troubleshooting a VLC-to-YouTube broadcast
