Usually, YouTube can archive a gaming live rerun after it ends, but its official guidance does not guarantee that the replay will appear as a separate second VOD alongside the uploaded video used as the source. Streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Check the channel’s Live tab and the rerun in YouTube Studio to confirm whether that broadcast’s replay exists and how it is listed.
What counts as a separate VOD?
A rerun is a new live broadcast, while a VOD is a video available to watch after the broadcast ends. If YouTube captures the live broadcast, its replay may appear as a video on the channel. That replay is distinct from the original uploaded video used as the rerun’s source, but YouTube’s guidance does not expressly promise that every rerun will be listed as a second, separate VOD beside that original upload.
In other words, an after-stream replay may be created, but whether it is separately listed and visible depends on the particular broadcast and its archive settings. Do not assume the original source upload itself is the only video viewers can watch afterward—or that a second listing is guaranteed.
When YouTube archives a live rerun
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. It also warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. The guidance applies to encoder, webcam, and mobile streams. YouTube says it automatically archives 1440p and 2160p (4K) streams as well; that does not remove the 12-hour caveat.

After ending the rerun, look for its entry in YouTube Studio under Content and check the channel’s Live tab. YouTube’s help pages describe replays as videos on the channel, but visibility settings and channel choices can affect whether viewers can see a particular archive. In Studio, creators can change an archive’s visibility or delete it.
YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. It is a safeguard in case the on-platform capture is unavailable, not a requirement for YouTube to create a VOD. For gameplay, YouTube’s live-streaming tips also advise checking local archive files when using an encoder.

Replay versus DVR: what viewers can watch
DVR is the pause-and-rewind feature available while a live broadcast is underway. It is not the same as the recording made available after the stream ends. With DVR, viewers cannot seek back to a point before the broadcast began; very long streams may have limited or unavailable DVR. If DVR is turned off, viewers may still be able to watch a recording of the entire stream after it becomes available. Turning DVR off therefore does not, by itself, mean that no post-stream recording will exist.
How to check whether your rerun produced a VOD
- End the broadcast and allow YouTube to process it. Do not treat the source upload or the live player’s DVR controls as confirmation of an archive.
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Content. Find the entry corresponding to the rerun, then review its visibility and whether it is available to viewers.
- Check the channel’s Live tab. Look for the rerun’s replay as a video. Compare its title and broadcast details with the original uploaded source; the original upload and the rerun archive are not necessarily the same listing.
- If no replay appears, check the broadcast duration and archive settings. A stream over 12 hours may not have been captured. You can also review the rerun’s entry in Studio for visibility changes or deletion.
- For future broadcasts, keep a local copy if losing the recording would matter. YouTube recommends a local archive as backup. A separate storage drive is optional; YouTube does not require one to create an on-platform replay.
What YouTube’s guidance does—and does not—settle
YouTube’s official pages support three practical conclusions: a captured live stream can be archived; a replay may appear as a channel video; and creators can manage an archive’s visibility or delete it. They do not specifically guarantee that a rerun made from an already uploaded video will always create a separately listed second VOD beside that source upload. That distinction can matter when the rerun is made through an encoder or a third-party service, so verify the actual listing rather than relying on a universal promise.

For analytics, YouTube organizes live-stream metrics by video ID, and likes transfer to the VOD archive. That is another reason to check the archive entry itself when reviewing performance after a rerun.
