OBS Playlist Plugins vs. FFmpeg Scripts for a 24/7 Cartoon Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose OBS’s built-in VLC Video source if you want to manage a looping playlist inside OBS and value scene-based controls. Choose an FFmpeg concat script if you want to maintain the sequence as text and control a direct streaming pipeline—and can validate media compatibility and supervise the process. Neither playlist method, by itself, guarantees an uninterrupted 24/7 stream.

What “OBS playlist plugin” means here

You do not necessarily need a third-party plugin to play a playlist in OBS. OBS documents a built-in VLC Video source that accepts a list of video or audio files. Its separate built-in Media Source is for an individual file and includes a file-loop option. This comparison focuses on VLC Video playlists versus FFmpeg’s concat demuxer, which reads a text file of inputs in sequence.

OBS describes plugins as modules that can add sources and other functionality, but no specific third-party playlist plugin is established here. If you are considering one, verify its current release, compatibility with your OBS version and platform, maintenance, security, and license before relying on it for a continuous channel. See the OBS Media Sources documentation and OBS plugin developer documentation.

OBS VLC Video vs. FFmpeg concat

Decision point OBS VLC Video playlist FFmpeg concat script
Where the sequence lives In a VLC Video source associated with an OBS scene. In a text file listing inputs and optional directives, read by FFmpeg’s concat demuxer.
Repeating playback Loop Playlist is enabled by default in OBS’s documentation; shuffle is optional. The demuxer reads inputs in sequence. The format documentation does not establish an infinite live-stream process; confirm the loop, output, and restart behavior of your command and installed FFmpeg version.
Dependencies and compatibility VLC must be installed. Match architectures: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Requires an FFmpeg build and a maintained command configuration. For concat, inputs must have the same streams, including codecs and time base.
Editing the order Edit the playlist in the source’s OBS controls; shuffle is available. Edit the text playlist and maintain valid paths and syntax. Paths with spaces or special characters need appropriate escaping or quoting.
Scene visibility The documented default is to stop when not visible and restart when visible. Pause or continue behavior is available; set it deliberately for your scene layout. If FFmpeg sends output directly, playback is controlled by its process rather than an OBS scene’s visibility.
Transitions and timestamps The documentation does not promise gapless switching for a given collection. Test your actual files. Concat derives later timestamps from file durations. Inaccurate durations can cause artifacts, and differing stream lengths can create gaps.
24/7 reliability Loop controls are documented; a service-level uptime guarantee is not. Concat is a sequencing mechanism, not a process supervisor or uptime guarantee.

Sources: OBS Media Sources and the FFmpeg Formats Documentation. These are documented-feature comparisons, not results of a head-to-head uptime test.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set up a playlist in OBS

  1. Install VLC before configuring the source. The VLC Video source appears when VLC is installed, and its architecture must match OBS. The OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
  2. Add a VLC Video source. In the scene where the cartoon stream should appear, add a VLC Video source and populate its playlist with the media files you intend to play. OBS’s Media Sources guide documents the source and its playlist controls.
  3. Choose playback behavior. Confirm Loop Playlist is on if the list should repeat. Enable Shuffle only if the order should vary. Inspect the audio-track and caching settings, too. The documented network-caching setting is 400 ms; treat it as a displayed setting, not as a recommendation for local files.
  4. Check visibility behavior. By default, the source stops when it is not visible and restarts when visible. If scenes hide or show the source, choose the intended stop, pause, or continue behavior and verify it in your installed OBS version.
  5. Test the actual playlist in the final scene. Watch file changes, audio, and scene transitions. The source documentation does not establish gapless transitions for your particular media collection.

Build an FFmpeg concat workflow

The concat demuxer is suited to a sequential, text-managed playlist. Its official documentation covers file-list syntax, stream compatibility, and timestamp behavior; it does not prescribe one universal command for an unknown media library or guarantee continuous streaming. Consult the FFmpeg Formats Documentation, concat sections 3.6–3.6.1 for syntax supported by your installed version.

  1. Validate the files first. Check that every input has the same streams, codecs, and time base before relying on concat with stream copying. Do not assume cartoons with different encodes or audio layouts will concatenate cleanly.
  2. Create and maintain the file list. List files in the intended sequence using valid paths and concat syntax. Escape or quote paths that include spaces or special characters according to the format documentation.
  3. Choose the output and repetition behavior explicitly. A concat list defines sequential inputs; it does not alone define an indefinitely running, supervised stream. Verify the FFmpeg command’s looping and output behavior against your installed build, then plan how the process will be restarted if it exits.
  4. Check timestamps and transitions. Concat uses input durations to place subsequent timestamps. Incorrect duration information can produce artifacts; unequal stream lengths can create gaps. Test transitions in the resulting stream, not just by inspecting the playlist text.
  5. Decide whether to normalize or re-encode. If files are incompatible, normalize them or use a filter/re-encode workflow designed for the inputs. That adds configuration and compute requirements; the cited documentation does not evaluate its cost for your setup.

Make either option operate continuously

A repeating playlist is only one part of a 24/7 production setup. OBS and FFmpeg documentation describe media playback and sequencing, not end-to-end uptime, destination recovery, monitoring, or rights to broadcast. The OBS FFmpeg source implementation includes a reconnect path for non-local media, but that implementation detail is not a service-level guarantee. See the OBS FFmpeg source implementation.

Before treating the channel as always on, test the complete setup and decide who or what will detect and recover failures:

  • Run a full playlist cycle and inspect transitions, audio, and output.
  • Disconnect the stream destination deliberately and check how the actual setup behaves when the connection returns.
  • Restart the host and confirm that the stream process and playlist resume as intended.
  • Test a missing or corrupt file and decide how playback should continue.
  • Update the playlist under realistic conditions and confirm that the running process handles the change as expected.
  • Provide process supervision, monitoring, and alerts appropriate to your deployment. A loop or concat list does not supply these operational safeguards on its own.

Which should you choose?

  • Pick OBS VLC Video when the stream is assembled and operated in OBS, you want a GUI playlist tied to scenes, and installing the matching VLC architecture is acceptable. Set visibility behavior intentionally.
  • Pick FFmpeg concat when you want a text-managed sequence and direct control of the streaming pipeline, and you can maintain the command, validate matching streams and timestamps, and supervise the process.
  • Do not choose based on an assumed uptime winner. The reviewed documentation does not establish that either option will run longer on your machine or with your files. Test the target collection, host, and destination.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your cartoon videos are ready to upload and the destination is YouTube, StreamNeo runs the playlist from the cloud: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
