Connect your phone to internet-connected Wi-Fi, then play the church’s YouTube recording as usual. That uses the Wi-Fi connection rather than your phone’s cellular data. If you want to listen where there is no connection, use YouTube’s Download option over Wi-Fi when it is available for that video, account and location.
Choose between Wi-Fi streaming and offline playback

Wi-Fi streaming still uses an internet connection, but not the phone’s cellular data while the phone stays on Wi-Fi. If you do not have internet-connected Wi-Fi, a router alone will not supply internet access; you need an internet service as well.
Play the recording over Wi-Fi
- Connect your phone to a Wi-Fi network that has internet access.
- Open the church’s recording in the YouTube app or a browser and play it.
- If avoiding cellular data is essential, turn off mobile or cellular data for YouTube in your phone’s system settings, where per-app controls are available. Alternatively, switch cellular data off temporarily.
Menu names and availability vary by phone, operating-system version and carrier. YouTube’s Android troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking the phone’s mobile-data settings: YouTube Help: Background play isn’t working – Android.
Save a recording in YouTube for offline listening
- While connected to Wi-Fi, open the video in the YouTube app.
- Check whether the video page offers Download. Use that option if it is available for the video, account and location.
- In YouTube, open Settings → Background & downloads and enable Download over Wi-Fi only. YouTube documents this setting for avoiding mobile-data downloads; labels or placement can vary by app version.
- Choose a download quality that suits your storage needs, complete the download while on Wi-Fi, then find and play it in Downloads in the app.
YouTube says higher-quality downloads can take more storage and data, so finish the download over Wi-Fi and consider available phone storage when choosing quality. See YouTube Help: Watch videos offline on mobile in select countries & regions – Android.

Know the limits of YouTube downloads
- Download availability is not guaranteed for every church recording. It depends on the video, account and location. YouTube Premium supports downloads where Premium is available, and YouTube also documents offline downloads in select locations. Check for the Download control in the app rather than assuming a particular recording is eligible.
- YouTube may require the app to reconnect to the internet to verify that a saved video is still available. The permitted offline period varies by location and content, so there is no single interval that applies everywhere.
- A channel membership does not guarantee that a video can be downloaded. YouTube’s Premium guidance likewise conditions downloads on availability. See YouTube Help: Watch videos offline with YouTube Premium – Android.
- A YouTube in-app download is for playback through YouTube; it is not an exported video file to move or redistribute.
Troubleshooting
YouTube still uses cellular data
- Cause: The phone is not actually connected to Wi-Fi, the Wi-Fi network has no internet access, or the phone falls back to cellular.
- Fix: Check the Wi-Fi connection and open a web page to confirm internet access. If your phone offers per-app network controls, block cellular access for YouTube; otherwise turn cellular data off while listening.
There is no Download button
- Cause: The video, account or location may not be eligible for offline viewing, or the required Premium route may not be available to you.
- Fix: Check the recording in the YouTube app while online and review YouTube’s offline-viewing guidance for your location. Do not use third-party downloaders as a substitute for YouTube’s supported feature.
A saved recording will not play offline
- Cause: YouTube may need to reconnect to confirm offline availability, or the video may no longer be available to play offline.
- Fix: Connect to the internet and reopen YouTube so it can check the download. Offline access periods depend on location and content.
The download will not complete or the phone is low on space
- Cause: Higher-quality downloads use more storage, and a download needs a working connection.
- Fix: Stay on Wi-Fi, choose a lower download quality if suitable, and free up storage. On supported devices, YouTube documents saving eligible downloads to an SD card when the device is configured for it: YouTube Help: Download YouTube videos to an SD card.
