A YouTube gaming VOD can look soft because the encoder sent a lower-resolution or lower-bitrate feed, the connection disrupted delivery, YouTube had not finished making the expected playback versions available, or the viewer’s device, network or player selected a lower quality. Those causes need different fixes. First check the highest resolution available in the VOD’s quality menu, then compare it with the encoder output and a local recording.
First, find out whether the VOD itself is limited
- Open the VOD’s quality menu. Note the highest resolution listed. Check the same video in a desktop browser and on the device where it looks blurry, and confirm playback is not set to a lower quality.
- Compare devices and networks. YouTube creates different output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. If the same VOD offers a higher quality on one device than another, the lower-resolution appearance may be a playback or connection issue rather than a limitation in the archived stream.
- Compare the VOD with a local recording. If you recorded locally, check its resolution and appearance against the YouTube archive. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup; the comparison can help identify whether the quality was already limited before the stream reached YouTube.
YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats. That does not add detail that was missing from the incoming stream, and the available documentation does not promise a fixed time for every rendition to appear. If the VOD is recent, check it again later rather than assuming a particular processing time.
Check what your encoder actually sent
Look at the streaming software or console’s output resolution and frame rate, along with any scaling settings. A game running at 1440p does not by itself mean the encoder sent 1440p: the stream output can be configured separately. If the encoder scaled the image down before sending it, the VOD cannot recover the missing source detail.
YouTube recommends automatic detection of resolution and frame rate by default. A custom stream key can allow manual resolution selection. Review the settings attached to the stream key actually used for this broadcast, not just the current settings in your software.

Check the codec and frame rate too: YouTube’s recommended live bitrate depends on all three—codec, resolution and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube Help recommendations for H.264 live ingestion, not guarantees of a particular result. Use the row that matches the stream you sent.
| H.264 live stream output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 7 Mbps | 15 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) at 60 fps | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
These are live-stream settings, not upload targets for a separately uploaded video. YouTube’s separate SDR upload recommendations, for example, list 8 Mbps for 1080p at standard frame rates and 12 Mbps at high frame rates; the 1440p figures are 16 Mbps and 24 Mbps respectively. Do not substitute upload guidance for the live-ingestion row that matches your stream.

Check connection quality and stream health
A configured bitrate only helps if the outbound connection can sustain it. Run an upload speed test, verify that the connection can send the stream bitrate, and review the stream-health messages in your streaming setup for encoder or network warnings. YouTube’s advice is direct: “Make sure your outbound connection is enough to send your stream bitrate.”
- If the connection cannot reliably sustain the configured bitrate, lower the stream bitrate to a value it can support, or address the connection problem before the next broadcast.
- If health messages point to encoder problems, check the encoder’s output settings and system load rather than changing the viewer’s playback settings.
- A wired Ethernet connection may be worth considering only if your checks indicate instability or insufficient upload capacity. A cable will not fix a low encoder resolution, a playback quality selection or YouTube processing that is still underway.
Check archive behavior and HDR only when relevant
Archive availability and duration
YouTube says it can automatically archive live streams shorter than 12 hours, including encoder, webcam and mobile streams, and automatically archives 1440p and 2160p streams. Streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If no VOD appears, or the archive is incomplete after a very long broadcast, duration may be relevant; it is not a remedy for a VOD that exists but looks blurry.

HDR gaming streams
HDR is a separate compatibility path, not a general resolution fix. YouTube Live HDR requires a compatible source and encoder and currently requires H.265/HEVC. Check HDR-specific settings only if the game, display and encoder were set up for HDR. If the stream was SDR, HDR is not the likely explanation for its lower resolution.
Troubleshoot by what you find
| What you observe | Likely area to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The VOD’s highest quality is lower than the resolution you intended to stream. | Encoder output, scaling, stream-key configuration or stream health. | Confirm the actual output resolution and frame rate, then check the matching live bitrate recommendation and health messages. |
| The VOD offers a higher resolution on desktop than on the device where it looks soft. | Playback selection, device or network. | Set the higher quality manually if available, then compare on another device or network. |
| The VOD looks worse than the local recording. | Stream delivery or YouTube’s playback path. | Review stream-health warnings and compare the encoder’s sent settings with the VOD’s highest listed quality. |
| The VOD’s quality menu does not yet show the expected rendition. | Transcoding or rendition availability. | Check again later; YouTube documents transcoding but does not specify a universal wait time for each rendition. |
| A VOD from a stream longer than 12 hours is missing or incomplete. | Archive duration limit. | Keep a local recording for future broadcasts and check the stream duration. |
| The stream was intended to be HDR, but its color or compatibility is wrong. | HDR source, encoder or H.265/HEVC configuration. | Verify that the source and encoder support YouTube Live HDR and that the stream uses the required codec. |
