You can automate OBS to launch on a Windows PC, but that does not make the stream independent of the computer: it must stay powered, connected, awake, and able to run OBS. Windows Task Scheduler can start the app; it does not guarantee that OBS will recover from network failures or operate reliably without supervision. Treat this as a setup to test and monitor, not a proven set-and-forget service.
What “without leaving the desktop open” means
You do not need to keep the desktop session in front of you or manually click OBS each time. You can arrange for Windows to start OBS at sign-in or on a schedule. The stream itself still runs locally on that Windows computer, so the PC must remain on and the stream must have power, an internet connection, and working media and streaming settings.
OBS community guidance notes that Task Scheduler can launch OBS but cautions that OBS is not designed for unattended, noninteractive streaming. Microsoft’s Task Scheduler documentation describes scheduling applications and tasks generally; it does not promise OBS reconnection or continuous broadcast reliability. Use the process below as an automation starting point, then verify it on the actual machine.
Check YouTube eligibility and audience settings first
Confirm that the channel can livestream
YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days before livestreaming. The stream must also comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. These conditions do not establish that a broadcast can stay live indefinitely; the sources do not confirm a maximum continuous-live duration or guarantee restart behavior.

Decide accurately whether the stories are made for kids
YouTube says creators worldwide must designate whether content is made for kids, in support of COPPA and other applicable laws. Stories, songs, child-oriented language, characters, and intended audience can all be relevant. Content can be directed to children even when children are not its primary audience. You are responsible for choosing the correct setting; YouTube recommends seeking legal advice if you are unsure.
Plan around the made-for-kids feature changes
For live streams designated made for kids, YouTube disables live chat, live chat replay, comments on live-stream archives and upcoming streams, and reminder notifications. Personalized ads are disabled on live streams and Premieres, though contextual ads may still appear. Build the format and revenue expectations around those limits rather than expecting chat or personalized advertising.

Prepare OBS and the story media
- Prepare the Windows host. Use an existing Windows PC if it can handle the workload; a new dedicated computer is optional, not a prerequisite. Keep it connected to power and the internet, and configure Windows so it will not sleep or hibernate while the stream is meant to run. Exact power-setting labels vary by Windows version, which has not been established here.
- Prepare the media and scene. In OBS, build and test the scene and playback arrangement for the story recordings you intend to stream. Confirm that the intended video and audio are present and play correctly. Save the OBS profile and scene collection you want to use.
- Set the streaming destination and key. Configure OBS for YouTube using the channel’s stream settings and stream key. Treat the key as private: anyone who obtains it may be able to stream to your channel. Confirm the destination and key before automating launch; a scheduled app start cannot correct an account or key error.
- Set the audience designation on YouTube. Mark the stream and its associated content accurately as made for kids or not made for kids. Do not assume that a child-friendly label alone decides the question; consider the factors YouTube identifies, including the stories and intended audience.
- Run a supervised test. Start OBS, verify the correct profile and media load, and confirm that YouTube receives the intended stream. Check both video and audio rather than assuming a successful app launch means a successful broadcast.
Schedule OBS with Windows Task Scheduler
Task Scheduler can launch an application on a trigger such as sign-in or a schedule. Because the exact Windows edition and version are not specified, labels and available options may differ. The essential task is to point the trigger at the OBS executable and verify the result on your machine.
- Open Task Scheduler from the Windows Start menu.
- Create a task and choose a trigger that matches your intended operation, such as when the relevant Windows user signs in. A scheduled trigger is another option if it fits your workflow.
- Configure an action to start OBS. Select the OBS executable installed on this PC. OBS supports launch parameters, but the reviewed guidance does not establish a particular command line that will reliably select your profile, media, or begin unattended streaming; do not assume a launch argument solves those steps.
- Save the task, then test it. Sign out and back in or use the task’s run option, and check whether OBS opens with the expected profile and scene. Confirm separately whether it actually starts the intended YouTube broadcast; opening OBS is not the same as proving that the stream is live.
Test the failure cases before relying on automation
Task Scheduler automates application launch, not every part of keeping a live broadcast available. Test the following on the target PC and decide how you will notice and respond if a check fails:

- Reboot: Restart Windows and verify the scheduled task runs, OBS loads the right profile, and the stream reaches YouTube.
- Network interruption: Interrupt the connection in a controlled test. Check whether OBS and YouTube recover as expected; the sources do not establish that Task Scheduler provides reconnection.
- Sleep or power loss: Confirm Windows does not sleep during operation. A power failure or outage can stop a local stream; backup power may be a consideration, but no runtime can be assumed without sizing and testing the equipment.
- Media and audio: Check that the story source continues playing and that audio remains present after a restart. A successful OBS launch does not prove that a media source is functioning.
- Updates: Test after Windows, OBS, or other relevant software updates. Updated software may change behavior or require a new sign-in or configuration check.
- Account and key: If OBS opens but YouTube does not receive the stream, check the destination, account access, and stream key rather than repeatedly scheduling the same launch.
No minimum CPU or GPU, Windows version, or long-duration hardware performance has been validated here. If you need a dedicated host, evaluate its specifications for your actual OBS workload and test it over the duration and conditions you expect; a mini PC is not automatically sufficient just because it is compact.
