To check an always-on YouTube gaming stream remotely, open its Live Control Room in YouTube Studio and inspect stream health before audience analytics. For unattended checks, a custom monitor can query the YouTube Live Streaming API’s status and health fields. These approaches answer different questions: whether YouTube is receiving a healthy feed, and how viewers are responding.
Check a live stream in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio. Go to the channel’s Live section and select the active stream to open its Live Control Room. YouTube describes Studio as the place to manage current, upcoming, and past streams. YouTube’s live-streaming guide explains the Studio workflow.
- Check stream health and status first. Look at the health indicator and any messages beside it. YouTube’s metrics guidance says stream status can include specific errors and instructions. Its error guidance distinguishes critical red errors from moderate yellow ones and indicates that errors are timestamped. Follow the instruction attached to the message rather than treating the color alone as a diagnosis. See your live stream’s metrics and live streaming error messages.
- Check viewer-facing metrics separately. Live Control Room can show concurrent viewers, views, chat rate, average view duration, likes, reactions, and reminders set. These help describe audience activity; they do not, by themselves, establish that the encoder-to-YouTube feed is healthy.
What the status and health signals mean
If you build an automated check or need to interpret API data, the YouTube Live Streaming API documents stream and health fields on the live stream resource. The LiveStreams API reference lists these stream states:
- active: YouTube is receiving data.
- inactive: YouTube is not receiving data.
- error: The stream is in an error state.
- ready and created: Other documented lifecycle states; neither should be mistaken for confirmation that a public stream is currently receiving data.
The health status can be good, ok, bad, or noData. The API also documents the time of the last health update and configuration issues. In particular, noData is not a healthy result: it means YouTube’s live backend has no health information to report. Check the stream state and dashboard, and avoid presenting missing health data as an all-clear.
Choose manual checks or an API monitor

The API exposes fields that can support a custom monitor; it does not, by that fact alone, send you a text, email, or push notification. Authentication, quota limits, alert delivery, and suitable polling frequency depend on the implementation and current API requirements. Consult the current API reference before building one. The documented fields also do not establish a universal update-latency guarantee, so do not promise a particular detection time.

Use Analytics for the archived gaming VOD
“VOD stream” can mean an always-on live broadcast made from prerecorded gaming video, or the archived video viewers watch later. While the broadcast is active, monitor it as a live stream in Live Control Room. For archived or on-demand performance, use YouTube Analytics. YouTube says some live-stream analytics become available within minutes after a stream ends, while a particular vertical-stream breakdown can have a 24-hour delay; availability varies by report. YouTube’s metrics guidance describes these measures.
The LiveBroadcasts API also documents a monitor stream for a broadcaster to review before making a broadcast public. That is a pre-broadcast review feature, not a remote alert for an already-running public stream. See the LiveBroadcasts API reference.

Troubleshoot common monitoring results
- The stream is inactive: YouTube is not receiving data. Check whether the encoder or streaming service is still running and sending to the intended broadcast; then refresh Live Control Room and inspect any displayed error instructions.
- The health status is bad or an error appears: Read the accompanying issue and timestamp, then address the reported configuration or feed problem. The dashboard’s instructions are more useful than guessing from the color alone.
- The API says noData: Treat health as unknown, not good. Check the last health-update time, stream status, and the dashboard; the API description does not make noData an all-clear.
- The feed looks healthy but viewers report playback trouble: Ingest health and public playback experience are different signals. Check the viewer-facing experience as well as stream health; a healthy ingest indicator alone does not prove every viewer’s playback is smooth.
- Audience metrics are low or changing: Concurrent viewers, chat rate, views, and average view duration describe audience activity. They do not diagnose encoder configuration, so check health/status separately.
- An automated check has not alerted: The API fields do not automatically establish alert delivery or timing. Verify your own authentication, requests, polling, and notification path against the current API documentation.
