Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYou can run a prerecorded YouTube livestream by keeping FFmpeg running inside a Docker container and sending its output to the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room. Docker packages the encoder process; it does not make the broadcast uninterrupted by itself. You still need to monitor FFmpeg and YouTube’s incoming preview, plan for failures, and decide how to handle YouTube’s 12-hour archive and DVR limits.
How the Docker and FFmpeg setup works
The broadcast has three parts: your media, an encoder process, and YouTube’s ingest service. FFmpeg reads a video or playlist, optionally converts it, and sends the resulting stream to YouTube. Docker runs that process in a container on a computer or remote host. YouTube Live Control Room supplies the server URL and stream key, and its preview shows whether YouTube is receiving the feed.
A container that is running is not proof that the broadcast is healthy. FFmpeg can encounter an input or network error, the ingest connection can drop, or the video can arrive without usable audio. Check both the encoder’s logs and YouTube’s preview and playback.
Prepare YouTube Live Control Room first
Confirm the channel can stream
YouTube’s current live-stream eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and belong to a streamer aged 16 or older. Check the channel’s eligibility before building the encoder workflow; a correctly configured FFmpeg process cannot bypass an account restriction.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Create the stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in the stream’s settings. Do not assume an old URL or key is still the right one.
- Treat the key as a password. Do not put it in a public repository, screenshot, shared log, or published command. If it is exposed, reset it in the stream settings and update the encoder.
- Review the stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. Their behavior depends on the settings you choose.
In the encoder workflow, you connect FFmpeg to the URL and key, start the encoder, then check for an incoming preview. For scheduled-stream flows, wait for the preview and click Go live in Live Control Room when it is ready.
Choose RTMPS and prepare the FFmpeg output
RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. Use the RTMPS server URL provided in Live Control Room when the FFmpeg build and workflow support it; do not substitute an assumed default URL. YouTube’s RTMPS help page describes this secure option, and Google’s developer documentation also covers delivering live content over RTMPS.

For your stream, keep the important parts of that pattern: -re paces file input in real time, -i identifies the media input, and -f flv selects the output muxer used by the documented RTMP example. Replace the example input and destination with your own. Use the current server URL and stream key from Live Control Room, following the format it specifies; never publish the real key. RTMPS is an RTMP variant, but the exact destination string depends on the server URL and key YouTube gives you.
The example illustrates the workflow, not a validated production command or a guarantee of recovery. The appropriate encoding settings depend on the source media, whether you copy or re-encode its audio and video, and the current requirements YouTube displays for the stream. The available guidance here does not establish a universal bitrate, resolution, codec, or Docker host specification, so avoid copying arbitrary values.

Run FFmpeg in Docker
Use a Docker image that contains an FFmpeg build with the protocols and codecs your media requires. Make the source files available to the container, start FFmpeg with the intended input and YouTube output, and keep the container attached to logs you can inspect. The precise Dockerfile, image, volume configuration, and resource allocation depend on the host and media; no single tested deployment or universal host requirement is established here.
- Choose the host. An existing computer or remote host can run the container if it can access the media and maintain an internet connection. A dedicated small computer is optional, not a requirement established by YouTube’s general encoder guidance.
- Prepare the media path. Put the video or playlist where the container can read it. Confirm the file is complete and that its audio and video play as intended before starting the broadcast.
- Configure FFmpeg’s input and output. Use the real-time pacing and FLV/RTMP pattern above, adapting the input and the RTMPS destination to your stream. Keep the key private, including in any files or logs you share.
- Start the container and inspect its output. Check that FFmpeg opens the media and continues producing output rather than exiting on a file, codec, or connection error.
- Verify the incoming feed. In Live Control Room, wait for the preview and confirm both picture and sound before starting a scheduled broadcast or relying on the stream being live.
Docker provides a way to package and run the encoder; it is not a complete supervision or recovery plan. The available documentation does not establish a particular Docker restart policy, health check, secrets mechanism, or Compose configuration as sufficient for a 24/7 YouTube broadcast.

Make interruptions visible and plan recovery
FFmpeg documents reconnect options for certain TCP and TLS errors. These can help with some connection failures, but they do not mean a single process will recover from every failure or reconnect successfully to every live event. A restart by Docker likewise does not prove that YouTube has resumed the same broadcast. Treat reconnect settings as partial fault handling, not as an uptime guarantee.
- Watch FFmpeg’s logs for exits, repeated connection errors, stalled input, or missing audio/video output.
- Check YouTube’s incoming preview and the public watch or channel page, including on a mobile device, rather than relying only on the container status.
- Test the failure and recovery path before depending on it. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend testing encoder failover and continuously monitoring quality.
- Keep a separate local recording if preserving the program matters. YouTube recommends a local archive backup, and its tips include checking that the local archive file is growing.
- Confirm that viewers can access the stream and that audio, video, and accessibility needs are being handled.
Will YouTube save a 24/7 livestream?
Do not rely on one continuous stream longer than 12 hours to create a replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. YouTube also warns that DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours.
If a YouTube replay is important, schedule sessions comfortably shorter than 12 hours, use a deliberate stop-and-restart workflow, and retain a local recording. Splitting the broadcast is a way to avoid relying on an overlong single archive, but it does not establish that viewer or notification behavior will remain continuous across sessions.
Where to run the encoder—or avoid maintaining one
Self-hosting gives you control over the host and FFmpeg configuration, but you are responsible for keeping that host, process, media access, and monitoring in order. YouTube’s general encoder guidance describes computer-based streaming workflows but does not specify minimum CPU, memory, or network capacity for this prerecorded use case. YouTube Help also lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos; check its current capabilities and terms directly before choosing it.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on prerecorded YouTube stream rather than maintaining a Docker host, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video or playlist from the cloud. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the uploaded quality is streamed as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically attempts recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
