For an always-on service, also plan for power and internet failures, stream recovery, and the limits on automatic archiving. A worship-service license does not automatically clear a continuous playlist of commercial recordings.
Before setup: confirm the channel is eligible
Open YouTube Studio and check that the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do this well before your planned launch. Its eligibility guidance also says users must be at least 16 to live stream. Clear the music before building the playlist
A church-service license may not cover radio-style playback
Check rights for the actual songs, recordings, territory, platform, and use in your continuous stream. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; if it detects a match, it can show a placeholder and may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream if the content continues. YouTube also warns that a stream can be interrupted even when the broadcaster has a license, unless the rights owner has added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Understand what CCLI describes—and what it does not establish
CCLI’s US Streaming License describes coverage for authorized worship songs and hymns performed live. Streaming Plus extends that described coverage to authorized master recordings, artist tracks, backing tracks, and multitracks. CCLI’s US page claims a catalog of more than 450,000 songs; that is CCLI’s own catalog claim, not confirmation that a particular station playlist or recording is covered. Do not assume a license intended for worship services also permits continuous playback of commercial radio recordings. Ask the rights provider about the exact repertoire and recordings, the countries where the stream will be available, the platform, and whether the intended continuous use is permitted. This is especially important outside the United States, because the cited CCLI information describes its US offerings rather than a worldwide licensing determination.
Choose the encoder and prepare the broadcast feed
YouTube accepts an encoder running as software on a computer or as standalone hardware; its general setup guidance does not require a particular brand or model. An audio-only ministry still needs to send a video signal. Use a stable visual such as ministry branding, program information, or a presenter view, and verify that the encoder receives the intended audio feed.

Compare software on an existing computer with a dedicated hardware encoder based on the equipment cost, audio input and routing, support for YouTube’s required output protocol, unattended restart and remote monitoring, recovery after network or power loss, and whether the manufacturer documents continuous operation. YouTube’s general instructions do not establish that any specific encoder is suitable for reliable 24/7 operation.
Create the YouTube stream and connect the encoder
- Open YouTube Studio and Live Control Room. Create a stream, or schedule one if you want a watch page to promote in advance. Choose the intended visibility and enter appropriate stream metadata. YouTube says a scheduled stream has a shareable URL and lets viewers set reminders.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Enter the connection details in your encoder. Select YouTube if the encoder offers it. Otherwise, paste the YouTube stream URL into the server field and the stream key into the key field. YouTube’s instruction is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.”
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Confirm that the expected visual and audio appear in Live Control Room. When the preview is ready, go live as required by the workflow you chose.
- Run a private or otherwise suitable test before announcing the service. Check audio level, silence handling, visual legibility, internet stability, and the steps for recovering after an interruption. These are operational checks to perform on your own setup, not guarantees provided by YouTube.
Plan for uninterrupted output and recordings
A continuous stream depends on more than the YouTube connection: consider what happens if the computer or encoder loses power, the internet drops, or the application stops. Decide who can monitor the service, how the encoder will be restarted, and how the ministry will resume the broadcast after a failure. Test that recovery procedure before relying on it.

YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not infer from that rule that one longer continuous session will be archived in full. If you need a complete recording, plan a separate recording or archive workflow and verify current YouTube behavior for your stream length.

Can I use a phone as the encoder for a continuous radio stream?
The cited YouTube setup guidance describes software on a computer or standalone hardware encoder; it does not establish a phone workflow for unattended continuous operation.
Does scheduling a YouTube stream make it run continuously?
No. Scheduling creates a promoted watch page and reminder option; an encoder still has to send the live feed.
