You can use a Raspberry Pi in a YouTube gaming replay stream, but the Pi must be able to access the replay and run a compatible streaming/encoding workflow. A local video file is the simplest source to reason about; replay footage playing on a console or another computer needs a suitable way to get its video into the Pi first. The chain is replay source → Pi input and software → live encoding → YouTube Live. A Pi’s published video-encoding capability alone does not guarantee that a complete capture, playback, composition, and streaming setup will sustain your target quality.
Choose the replay source before choosing software
“Gaming replay” can mean different things, and each changes how the Pi receives video. Identify the source and connections before buying accessories or configuring an encoder.
- A video file stored on the Pi or accessible to it: Streaming software may be able to use the file as its video source. Confirm that your chosen software and operating system support the playback and streaming workflow you intend to use.
- Replay playing on a console or another computer: The video must reach the Pi through a suitable capture or other input workflow. The sources cited here do not establish compatibility for a particular capture card, console, or software combination. Check compatibility for your exact devices before purchasing equipment.
- Replay playing in a browser: The browser video must likewise be made available to the streaming software. Do not assume the Pi can capture another device’s screen without an appropriate input path.
A Raspberry Pi is not a gameplay capture device merely because it can encode video. Depending on your setup, you may need an appropriate capture device, cables, storage, Ethernet, and a suitable power supply; which items apply depends on the source device, Pi model, and software.

What the Pi 4 specification says
Raspberry Pi lists the Pi 4 Model B with H.264 encode at 1080p30, alongside H.264 decode at 1080p60 and H.265 decode at 4Kp60. Those are different capabilities: decode specifications do not mean the board can encode at the same resolution or frame rate. The encode figure is a useful starting point, not a guarantee that playback or capture, overlays, audio, and live streaming together will run smoothly. See the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B specifications.

What the Pi 5 encoding paper says
Raspberry Pi’s 2026 paper describes Pi 5 H.264 encoding as software encoding with libx264, rather than hardware H.264 encoding. Its abstract reports real-time 1080p30 output in low-latency mode using as little as 60% of a single CPU core. It also reports that high-quality mode achieved 2–3 dB better PSNR than the Pi 4 hardware encoder at tested bitrates of 500 kb/s to 5 Mb/s, while using approximately 100–150% of one CPU core. These are results from the paper’s tests, not a promise for a gaming replay stream that also has to play or capture video, compose scenes, and send a live feed. Read Raspberry Pi’s Pi 5 H.264 encoding paper.
Verify streaming software for your exact setup
Choose software that is available and supported for your Pi model and operating system, and verify that it can take your chosen replay source as input and send a YouTube Live stream. OBS’s guidance explains the general trade-off: hardware encoders are generally recommended for performance because they move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component. That does not establish that a particular OBS build is currently supported on your Pi, or that OBS is the right option for your input path. Confirm software availability and compatibility before building the workflow around it. OBS explains hardware encoding.

Configure YouTube Live output
YouTube’s general live-encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, H.264 for ordinary SDR video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1 video options, but use an option only if your chosen encoder and streaming path support it. Check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance.
Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together
Choose an output the Pi and software can sustain, then select the corresponding bitrate from YouTube’s table for that resolution and frame rate. As one specific example, YouTube gives 2 Mbps at the low end and 6 Mbps at the high end for 720p at 30 fps. That range is not a universal recommendation for other settings. Leave upload headroom rather than setting the stream at the full capacity of an unstable connection. YouTube Help says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.”

Use the stream key carefully
In YouTube’s live-stream workflow, use the stream key associated with the broadcast and enter it only into the streaming software you have chosen. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, share screenshots that expose it, or leave it in a public configuration file. The exact YouTube interface and eligibility steps can vary by account, so follow the current instructions shown in YouTube Studio rather than assuming every account has the same controls.
Build and test the stream in stages
- Confirm the input: Make sure the local file plays, or that your chosen capture/input workflow delivers the replay video to the Pi. Check that the replay’s sound reaches the same streaming workflow if you want audio on the broadcast.
- Set the output: In your streaming software, select the YouTube stream destination and key, then configure RTMPS where supported, H.264 for ordinary SDR, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and a bitrate appropriate to the chosen resolution and frame rate.
- Test before a public broadcast: Where appropriate for your account workflow, make a private or unlisted test. Include movement and audio representative of the real replay. YouTube recommends testing with similar motion and audio and checking stream health during the event.
- Watch the entire chain: Check for dropped frames, encoder overload, audio/video sync problems, and stream-health messages. A replay with fast motion, overlays, or scene composition may put more load on the system than a static image. Change one demanding setting at a time and retest.
- Start the intended broadcast only after the test is stable: Confirm the correct replay, audio, destination, and key before going live. Monitor the stream rather than assuming a successful local preview proves YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.
Why a gaming replay can strain a Pi
The total job includes more than encoding: the system may need to play or capture the replay, render overlays or scenes, run the operating system, encode, and maintain the network connection. OBS’s performance guidance describes this combined workload; it is a useful reason to test the actual arrangement, not proof that OBS is supported on every Pi. See OBS’s encoding-performance troubleshooting guidance.

Do not infer a guaranteed resolution and frame rate from a board specification or an encoder benchmark alone. A local file, capture input, overlays, software choice, cooling, and network conditions can all change the result. There is no end-to-end tested Pi recipe established here, so validate the exact setup before relying on it for a long broadcast.

- YouTube does not receive a picture: Check that the correct source is selected and producing video, then verify the destination and stream key in the software. If the replay comes from another device, confirm that its video actually reaches the Pi through the chosen input path.
- Frames drop or the encoder reports overload: Reduce output resolution or frame rate, remove unnecessary overlays, or choose a less demanding encoding mode if available. Test again with representative motion; a desktop preview alone may not reflect the live workload.
- The stream disconnects or reports poor health: Check the Pi’s network connection and available upload capacity. Retest the connection and leave headroom below its measured upload capability; a speed test is a guide, not proof that bandwidth will remain stable.
- Audio is missing or out of sync: Verify that the selected input includes the replay’s audio and that the streaming software is using the intended audio source. Test sound and motion together before the broadcast.
- The replay appears choppy even though encoding looks healthy: Check playback and input performance separately from encoding. The Pi may be struggling to decode or receive the source, not only to encode the outgoing stream.
- A capture device is not detected: Confirm compatibility among the capture device, Pi model, operating system, and streaming software with the manufacturers’ current documentation. No particular capture-card compatibility is established here.
Copyright and YouTube policy still apply
Streaming a replay does not remove rights or platform-policy obligations. Use footage, music, and other material you own or are authorized to broadcast, and check YouTube’s current rules and any relevant permissions before streaming. A live presentation also does not by itself establish that reused footage satisfies YouTube’s monetization policies; copyright and monetization eligibility are separate questions. If the replay includes licensed game music or another creator’s footage, resolve those rights before broadcasting.
