You can run a recurring YouTube stream of a church’s bhajan and prayer recordings with an encoder, but “nonstop” takes more than pressing Go Live: you need permission to stream every recording, a verified channel, a tested encoder and network, and a plan to rotate sessions and recover from failures. YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours; its guidance does not promise one indefinitely running session or gapless restarts.
1. Clear rights for every recording before you schedule
Make an inventory of the audio and visuals in the stream. Confirm that the church has permission for the relevant recording and composition rights, the intended YouTube streaming use, and the territories where the stream will be available. A devotional song, a church performance, a file found online, or possession of a recording does not by itself establish streaming rights.
YouTube’s Livestream terms make the provider responsible for having the necessary rights worldwide, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers and other royalty participants. This is YouTube’s platform requirement, not a determination of the church’s legal position; licensing rules vary by jurisdiction and work. Ask the relevant rights holders or a qualified adviser if the church is unsure what its permissions cover.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can trigger a warning, a placeholder image, interruption or termination; a stream archive may also receive a Content ID claim afterward. Even if licensed material is detected, the rights holder may need to allowlist the channel through Content ID. YouTube explains these possibilities in its copyright guidance for live streams. A rehearsal without a claim does not prove that all rights are cleared or guarantee that a later broadcast will stay online.

2. Confirm the channel can go live
Use a verified YouTube channel with no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time live activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable access and confirm it works well before announcing the first broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and encoder setup guide.
3. Choose an encoder and prepare the recordings
YouTube supports webcam, mobile and encoder-based streaming. For prerecorded bhajans, prayers, overlays or a planned recurring programme, an encoder is the relevant route. It can be software running on a computer or a standalone hardware device. YouTube does not require a new computer: first check whether existing equipment can run the encoder reliably for the schedule you intend.

Prepare the media and on-screen material in advance, then test them in the same order and at comparable audio levels and motion as the actual programme. If you plan a playlist, make sure the sequence, transitions and any breaks are intentional. A static devotional visual can reduce video complexity, but it does not remove the need to test audio levels and continuity.
YouTube’s encoder guide also points to cloud services for 24/7 streams. 4. Create the YouTube stream and connect the encoder
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, choose Go Live, then create or schedule the stream. A scheduled event can be promoted before it starts; YouTube also allows stream settings to be reused. See Manage live stream settings.
- Copy the connection details. In the stream’s encoder settings, copy the server URL and stream key. In your encoder, paste the URL into its server field and the key into its stream-key field. Exact field names vary by encoder.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: anyone with access may be able to send video to the stream. Do not publish it or share it in public documents. If it is exposed, use YouTube’s stream-key reset process and update the encoder with the replacement.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Confirm that Live Control Room receives the signal and that the picture and sound are correct before making the stream public or starting the scheduled programme.

5. Set a reliable starting quality and check upload capacity
Use settings that both your encoder and internet connection can sustain. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR) rate control and a recommended two-second keyframe interval. Its table lists 2 Mbps video bitrate for 720p at 30 fps. Treat that as a starting point to test, not a universal prescription; lower resolution may be more reliable on a limited connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection into and through Google’s servers.

Measure upload speed, not download speed. YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate below the available upload bandwidth with 20% left unused as headroom. Include audio and account for other devices that share the connection. If upload capacity fluctuates, choose a lower bitrate and resolution rather than operating at the limit. - Set up early. YouTube advises starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event.
- Check the preview and stream health. Verify that the picture arrives in Live Control Room, audio is audible and balanced, and the stream has no health warnings.
- Test representative material. Play audio and video with similar movement and levels to the real programme. Check the local recording too if you are recording on the encoder computer.
- Check viewer access. Confirm the intended audience can open the stream with the chosen visibility and schedule.
- Assign watch duties. If staffing allows, have one person monitor stream health and another respond to rights or audience issues.

7. Plan for session limits, restarts and failures
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not plan on one permanent session or assume that ending one session and starting the next will be gapless: YouTube’s published encoder guidance does not guarantee an indefinitely running session or seamless restart.
Build a continuity plan around the sessions you intend to run. Decide who will start the next session, when to rotate, how the team will notice a dropped stream, and what to do if the encoder, computer, power or network fails. Test the handoff and recovery process in an unlisted rehearsal. A continuous programme is only as dependable as its monitoring and recovery arrangements.
