The difficult part is keeping the PC, power and network stable when nobody is watching; YouTube’s setup guidance covers the stream, but not a universal recipe for unattended computer recovery.
Before you begin: check channel eligibility
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned start. Its current general guidance sets a minimum age of 16 for live streaming. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
- Have a stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for your selected stream bitrate. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and checking stream health rather than assuming a nominal connection speed will hold continuously.
- Confirm the PC can run your chosen resolution and frame rate without overheating or becoming unstable. A spare computer that can play a video is not necessarily able to encode and upload it continuously.
Create a YouTube stream and get its connection details
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream. YouTube’s encoder workflow is intended for productions such as screen capture, overlays, external audio/video equipment and other setups that need more control. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup steps.
- In the stream settings, locate the stream URL and stream key. Enter these in the encoder on the spare PC. Select an RTMPS connection or preset if your encoder offers it; YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts delivery between the encoder and YouTube. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it on screen, include it in a public recording, or share it. If it may have been exposed, reset it in the Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement. YouTube explains stream URL and key settings in Manage live stream settings.
Install an encoder and choose sustainable settings
Use an encoder application compatible with your operating system, or standalone encoder hardware. The spare-PC route uses software running on that PC; the hardware option is a separate device. YouTube lists both types but does not publish a benchmark establishing which is cheaper or more reliable for your situation.
Start with a manageable video target
YouTube’s current guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, HEVC/H.265 and AV1 video, and frame rates up to 60 fps. Start with a resolution and frame rate the PC can encode steadily and the upload connection can deliver consistently. For 1080p, YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates are:

These are YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates in its encoder settings guidance accessed in 2026, not a guarantee that a home connection will deliver without interruption. Recommendations differ at other resolutions and frame rates; consult YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for your exact target. If the stream health is unstable, reduce the target bitrate or video quality and test again.

Set the encoder parameters
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframes: Set a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for stereo audio and recommends 128 kbps.
- Colour: For SDR, YouTube recommends Rec. 709.
- Protocol: Prefer RTMPS where supported for encrypted delivery.
Encoder interfaces use different labels, so match the values rather than relying on a particular preset name. For settings beyond the 1080p examples above, use YouTube’s linked table rather than extrapolating a bitrate.
Test the full setup before leaving it unattended
- Configure the encoder with the stream URL, stream key and chosen output settings, then start a test stream or scheduled broadcast.
- Send representative audio and movement. YouTube specifically recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream.
- Check the Live Control Room preview, confirm playback on the watch page, and inspect stream-health indicators and messages. Monitor these during operation as well; a successful initial connection does not establish that a 24/7 broadcast will remain healthy.
- If you are also recording a local archive, verify that the recording file continues to grow and that the drive has room for it.
- Test the computer’s actual unattended behaviour: sleep and display settings, restart behaviour after updates, what happens after a power interruption, and whether the cooling remains adequate. These details depend on the operating system and hardware; YouTube does not prescribe universal settings for them.

Keep the spare PC running reliably
A 24/7 stream depends on the whole chain: source, encoder, PC, power, home network and YouTube ingest. Plan for failures beyond the stream settings.
- Prevent sleep: Set the PC’s sleep behaviour so it does not suspend while streaming. The exact controls differ between Windows, macOS and Linux versions; verify the setting on the actual machine instead of assuming a generic instruction applies.
- Manage updates and restarts: Schedule operating-system updates for a maintenance window and test how the encoder behaves after a restart. Do not assume it will reopen and resume the broadcast automatically unless you have verified that recovery.
- Watch heat and dust: Keep vents clear and check the machine under sustained encoding load. There is no single cooling threshold or maintenance interval established for every spare PC.
- Consider power continuity: A UPS may help with brief interruptions, but the right capacity depends on the PC and the required runtime. Neither YouTube’s guidance nor the settings above specify a universal UPS size.
- Prefer a predictable network path: For a stationary computer, Ethernet is a practical option. It is not a YouTube requirement; the relevant test is whether the connection reliably sustains the selected bitrate.
- Have a monitoring plan: Check stream health and messages, and decide who will respond if the PC loses power, the internet drops or the encoder stops.
When a spare PC is—and is not—the right fit
A local encoder makes sense if you want to manage the equipment yourself, can leave the PC and home connection running, and can monitor or recover them when something goes wrong. It is also the direct choice when your production depends on a local capture device or other PC-based inputs.

If your goal is to loop uploaded, prerecorded videos on YouTube rather than broadcast a live camera or capture feed, a cloud service is another approach. YouTube’s encoder page lists Gyre for 24/7 prerecorded video streams, but that listing alone does not establish current pricing or partner terms. The local-PC and cloud options differ in where the stream is operated and what source they suit; compare the source, need to keep home equipment on, and provider terms before choosing.
