Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo reduce CPU usage when looping videos in OBS, first identify whether the load comes from video decoding, scene rendering, or stream encoding. Then change the setting that targets that workload: enable Media Source hardware decoding when your GPU supports the file, simplify or resize costly scene content, or switch from CPU-based x264 encoding to a compatible hardware encoder. There is no reliable universal percentage reduction; measure your own setup after each change.
Find out what is using the CPU
A loop setting controls playback; it does not reveal which part of OBS is consuming resources. OBS may be decoding the clip, compositing the scene, or encoding the outgoing stream. These jobs have different fixes, so change one thing at a time and compare under the same scene and playback conditions.
OBS identifies encoder choice, output resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity as factors in CPU requirements. Its guidance does not provide a benchmark for a particular looped file or computer, so treat any improvement as system-specific. OBS System Requirements
Set up the loop for the type of video you have
One repeating file: Media Source
- In OBS, add or select a Media Source in the scene and open its properties.
- For a single local clip, enable Loop.
- If decoding appears to be the bottleneck, try Use hardware decoding when available. This asks OBS to use the GPU for decoding when the GPU has a suitable built-in decoder for the file. It will not help if the GPU or media format is unsupported.
- Use Close file when inactive only if you want a hidden source unloaded. OBS notes it can take a short time to appear after switching back; it is not a general fix for CPU use while the source is active.
See OBS’s Media Sources guide for source behavior and properties.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A rotating set of files: VLC Video
- Install VLC, then add a VLC Video source in OBS and configure its playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist if you want the list to repeat.
- For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
- Choose how the source behaves when it is not visible—stop and restart, pause and resume, or continue—based on whether background playback or a quick return matters to you.
Use VLC Video when you need playlist behavior, not on the assumption that it always uses less CPU than Media Source. OBS Media Sources
Reduce scene rendering work
OBS composites scenes using GPU resources, and expensive or unnecessary sources can add to the workload. If decoding and encoding do not explain the load, simplify the scene before changing stream quality.

- Remove sources you do not need in the live scene, especially unnecessary browser sources.
- Use a static image source for a non-animated graphic rather than a more resource-intensive source where appropriate.
- If the video is much larger than the stream canvas, make a lower-resolution copy closer to the intended output size. OBS cites 4K media scaled down to a smaller output as an example of a potentially unnecessarily large asset, not as a CPU benchmark.
OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide covers scene and output performance considerations.
Lower output demands only if needed
Resolution and frame rate affect output workload, but lowering either changes what viewers see. If 60 fps is not working well, OBS suggests trying 30 fps. Lowering output resolution can also reduce encoder load. Choose the highest settings your system can sustain reliably rather than treating a lower setting as mandatory.

Move encoding off the CPU when x264 is the bottleneck
If OBS is using x264 software encoding and CPU encoding is the issue, a compatible hardware encoder may shift that work to a specialized component in the GPU. OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC on supported GeForce generations for Windows and Linux, AMD AMF for Windows and Linux, Intel Quick Sync with processor-generation caveats, and Apple VideoToolbox with Mac-specific limitations. Availability depends on the hardware, operating system, drivers, and OBS options; check the encoder choices on your own system before considering a hardware purchase.
Hardware encoding is a performance tradeoff, not automatically a quality upgrade. OBS cautions that earlier-generation hardware encoders can produce lower image quality than software encoding at comparable bitrates. Its general guidance is that hardware encoders are often recommended for performance because they move encoding work off the CPU, but that is not a promise of a particular reduction for an individual setup. Test changes without guessing
- Record a baseline with the same scene, looped file or playlist, output resolution, frame rate, and encoder you normally use.
- Change one relevant setting—for example, hardware decoding, a scene source, output frame rate, or encoder.
- Run the same scene and playback conditions again and compare CPU use and whether OBS can maintain the stream.
- Keep the change only if it improves your actual setup without an unacceptable loss in image detail, motion smoothness, or source behavior.
Do not expect a fixed CPU saving from changing source type, media codec, or a toggle: the cited OBS guidance does not publish loop-specific before-and-after figures.

- Hardware decoding makes no difference: The GPU may not support decoding that file. Confirm compatibility; otherwise reduce the media dimensions or investigate scene rendering and encoding instead.
- VLC Video does not load or play correctly: Confirm VLC is installed and that its bitness matches OBS; 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
- A source takes a moment to return after switching scenes: If Close file when inactive is enabled, that delay is expected. Disable it if immediate return matters more than unloading the hidden file.
- CPU remains high after simplifying the scene: Check whether OBS is using x264. If CPU encoding is confirmed as the bottleneck, see whether a compatible hardware encoder is available.
- The stream struggles at 60 fps: Try 30 fps, or consider a lower output resolution, recognizing the resulting change in motion smoothness or detail.
- A hardware encoder lowers image quality: Compare output at your actual bitrate. Older hardware encoder generations may produce lower quality than software encoding at comparable bitrates.
How YouTube fits into the setup
YouTube supports livestreaming through an encoder, including software or hardware encoders. That establishes the delivery path, not a special CPU fix for looping video. OBS settings and the capabilities of your computer determine how the playback, scene, and encoding work are handled. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
