You can run a 24/7 gospel YouTube stream from a spare laptop by playing a rights-cleared video or audio-visual loop through an encoder, such as OBS, and sending it to YouTube Live. The laptop must stay awake, plugged into power, connected to the internet, and running the encoder; YouTube does not keep a local encoder going after the computer shuts down. Start with an unlisted test, use a bitrate your upload connection can sustain, and arrange someone to notice and recover a dropped feed.
Before you set up the stream
First confirm that YouTube Live is available for your channel in YouTube Studio. Do not assume that a subscriber threshold associated with mobile live streaming applies to an encoder-based stream from a laptop; check the channel’s own Live controls.
Prepare a visual and gospel audio you own or are licensed to use for the intended online live use and territory. Keep records covering each element: the musical composition, the sound recording, and any artwork or video. This is practical rights management, not a conclusion about Indian copyright law. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match can cause a warning, a placeholder image, an interruption, or termination. If you have a license for third-party material, YouTube says to ask the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; a license alone may not prevent a live interruption. Configure the video and audio
Choose a resolution and bitrate your connection can hold
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends testing upload bitrate and choosing stream quality to match connection reliability. Its H.264 recommendations include 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 frames per second and 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 frames per second. These are encoder bitrate recommendations, not a guarantee that a home connection can sustain them continuously. A mostly static background may not need 1080p; prioritize a stable feed over a higher resolution. Use the recommended encoder settings
- Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS support; choose RTMPS when available for an encrypted connection.
- Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 support. H.264 is the straightforward choice supported by the bitrate examples above.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Audio: Use AAC or MP3, both listed in YouTube’s guidance.
Use the exact quality and encoder options your software and hardware support. YouTube’s settings guidance is the reference for its current recommendations; confirm the available options in your encoder before going live.
Set up a laptop stream with OBS and YouTube Studio
- Prepare the loop. In OBS, add the rights-cleared video as a media source, enable looping, and check that its audio plays correctly. If your stream uses a still image with audio, add both sources and verify that they remain in sync. Keep the visual simple enough for the laptop to render reliably.
- Set the output. In OBS, open Settings → Output and configure the video encoder, CBR rate control, bitrate appropriate to the chosen resolution, and a two-second keyframe interval. Under Settings → Video, set the output resolution and frame rate you intend to stream. In Settings → Audio, select the intended audio device and confirm it is not muted. Menu names can vary by OBS version; use YouTube’s encoder guidance for the target values.
- Create the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live, select the streaming workflow, and create or schedule the broadcast. Set visibility to Unlisted for the initial test. Copy the stream key from the Live Control Room and enter it in OBS under Settings → Stream. Treat the key like a password; do not publish or share it.
- Start an unlisted test. Start streaming in OBS and wait for YouTube Studio to receive the signal. Check the preview and stream-health indicators. Test actual gospel audio and any moving visuals, then watch playback on a separate device and connection. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health during the broadcast. - Switch to the intended broadcast. Once the test works, end it, set up the public or scheduled broadcast in Studio, and start the encoder again. Verify the live player from another device before leaving the setup unattended.
Keep the spare laptop running
A local setup depends on the laptop, its power supply, home power, broadband, and the encoder process for the full broadcast. Configure the computer not to sleep or shut down automatically while plugged in, keep it on mains power, and use a reliable router connection where possible. A UPS may help where power interruptions are common, but choose one appropriate to your equipment; no particular model is established here.

Decide who will check the stream and what they will do if OBS closes, the internet drops, or YouTube stops receiving the feed. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers signal settings and stream health; it does not guarantee uninterrupted home power, broadband, or laptop operation. NIC’s webcast requirements are a separate government service, not general requirements for a personal YouTube creator in India: NIC says its webcast service is for central and state government institutions. Its separate hired-agency feed instructions mention a static public IP, outbound RTMP port 1935, and dedicated 2–4 Mbps bandwidth per stream; those requirements should not be applied to an ordinary home YouTube stream. Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube Studio does not receive a signal: Check that OBS is streaming, the correct stream key is entered, and the laptop has internet access. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in Studio and update OBS.
- Stream health reports unstable or insufficient bandwidth: Lower the resolution or bitrate, stop other upload-heavy activity on the connection, and repeat a test at the chosen settings. A brief speed test is not proof of all-day stability.
- The picture stutters or OBS struggles: Reduce output resolution or frame rate and check whether the laptop is overheating or under heavy load. The available sources do not establish a minimum laptop specification, so validate the actual device with a sustained test.
- Audio is missing or wrong: Check the OBS audio source and mute state, then monitor the YouTube preview and another device. Confirm that the loop itself has an audible track and does not end unexpectedly.
- The live stream is interrupted after a copyright match: Review Studio’s notice, stop using the disputed material unless your rights cover the live use, and contact the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting if you are licensed. A license may not by itself prevent the interruption.
- The feed stops when nobody is present: Check for sleep settings, power loss, router failure, or an encoder crash. Set a monitoring and restart plan; a local laptop does not provide automatic recovery from every failure.

What happens if the laptop loses internet mid-stream?
The broadcast can stop receiving the encoder feed. A local setup needs someone or a monitoring plan to notice and restart it after the connection returns.
