Connect OBS to a YouTube Live event, choose settings your computer and upload connection can sustain, and test the entire scene before going live. You do not need to show your desktop: the scene can contain only your audio and designed visuals.
Choose the kind of visual you want
YouTube Live receives a video stream with audio, so even an audio-led podcast needs a visual feed from the encoder. The simplest option is a still image; an animated loop adds motion without reacting to the sound. A true visualizer—bars or a waveform that responds to the live audio—requires a source that can analyze the intended audio signal.
| Visual approach | What viewers see | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Static cover art | A still image while the podcast plays | Few moving parts; make sure episode and show text remain legible. |
| Looped animation | A repeating video or animated background | It moves, but does not necessarily respond to the audio. |
| Audio-reactive visualizer | Bars, a waveform, or another effect driven by sound | Verify the tool, audio signal path, OBS version, operating system, and performance before relying on it live. |
OBS’s official guides document image, media, and audio sources, but do not identify a built-in real-time audio-reactive visualizer. A reactive effect may require a third-party plugin or browser-based source; compatibility varies by platform, architecture, and OBS version. Check the tool against your installed setup rather than assuming it is built in or will work everywhere. OBS Sources Guide
Prepare the podcast audio source
First decide what OBS should capture: a microphone or mixer input, a remote-call mix, an application’s audio, or a prerecorded program. Add the source that matches the signal you actually want viewers to hear, then speak or play audio and confirm its meter moves.

- For a live microphone or external mixer, select the intended input device.
- For a remote call or desktop application, capture the correct application or output. OBS documents per-application audio capture for supported Windows versions.
- For prerecorded segments, OBS Media Source supports common formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Check playback and routing before the show.
- Avoid capturing the same device both as a scene source and through a duplicate global capture. OBS warns that duplicate capture can cause echo.
See the OBS Audio Sources guide for device capture details. For prerecorded audio and supported media behavior, see OBS Media Sources.
Build the OBS scene
- Create a scene: In OBS, create a scene for the episode so its sources and layout are separate from other productions.
- Add the audio source: Use the appropriate audio input, output, application capture, or Media Source. Confirm the meter responds to the program audio.
- Add the visual: In the Sources dock, add an Image source for artwork or a Media Source for a video loop. For a reactive visualizer, add only a tool you have verified with your OBS version and operating system.
- Arrange and size sources: Set the visual behind any titles or other graphics, position it in the canvas, and check that important text is not covered. OBS lets you order and position scene sources in the Sources dock.
- Check the audio-to-visual path: If the effect should react to a particular microphone, application, or mixed program, confirm that it receives that signal—not a different device or silence.
For the basics of scene sources, ordering, and positioning, consult the OBS Sources Guide. For media source behavior, consult OBS Media Sources.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Create or schedule the event: Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule the live stream.
- Copy the event’s stream details: Use the destination and stream key shown for that event in OBS. Treat the stream key like a password; do not show it in a screenshot or expose it publicly.
- Set the connection: YouTube recommends RTMPS for live encoder ingestion. OBS’s stream configuration should use the destination and key for the event you intend to broadcast.
- Check detection and output: YouTube says it automatically detects encoder settings in its default configuration. Its documentation says a custom key is needed to manually select resolution and frame rate.
- Start with a test: Confirm the incoming preview and stream health in YouTube’s Live Control Room before you make the episode public.
Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for its ingestion guidance.

Choose stable audio and video settings
For a podcast visual that is mostly static, 30 fps is a sensible starting point; OBS notes that 60 fps can be more demanding. Choose resolution and bitrate for your upload capacity and encoder headroom, not simply the highest available values. YouTube’s recommendations below are guidance for H.264 encoding, not universal minimums or a promise that a particular connection or computer can sustain the stream.
Recommended Free Tools
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 10 Mbps |
YouTube’s current encoder guidance also specifies AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended 2-second keyframe interval (do not exceed 4 seconds), and 128 kbps as its recommended stereo audio bitrate. These are encoder recommendations, not a guarantee of better podcast sound or requirements for every creator. The page lists 44.1 kHz for stereo audio and 48 kHz for 5.1; for a normal stereo podcast, there is generally no reason to switch to surround sound without a production need. Check the current YouTube encoder settings page when configuring your output.
Test the stream before the episode
Make a short private or unlisted test, or a local recording, using the complete scene. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the intended live stream and monitoring stream-health messages during the event. OBS also recommends testing before a first stream; its Quick Start Guide describes the setup process.

Troubleshoot common problems
No audio reaches YouTube
Check that the intended device, application, or media source is selected in OBS and that its meter moves. Verify that the audio is routed to the stream mix, then make another short test and listen to the result.
Viewers hear an echo
Look for the same device being captured twice—for example, as a scene-level source and as a global device. Disable the duplicate capture and test again; OBS specifically warns that duplicate audio capture can cause echo.
The visualizer does not move
A static image and a pre-rendered loop do not analyze live audio. For a reactive effect, check that the source is receiving the correct signal and that the tool supports your current OBS version and operating system. If compatibility or load is uncertain, use cover art or a loop for the broadcast.

The image or loop is missing or obscures text
Check that the source is enabled, correctly ordered, and positioned in the scene. Recheck the full canvas in the test stream rather than relying only on the editor preview.
The stream is unstable or the encoder is struggling
Reduce the output demand—such as choosing 720p30 instead of 1080p60—and test again. Compare your settings with YouTube’s recommended bitrate for the chosen H.264 resolution and frame rate, and leave enough capacity for the encoder and upload connection. YouTube’s stream-health messages can help identify an incoming-stream problem.
YouTube does not show the expected resolution or frame rate
Check whether the event is using YouTube’s default automatic encoder-setting detection or a custom stream key. YouTube says a custom key is needed to manually select resolution and frame rate; confirm the event and OBS output settings before going live.

Keep copyright and reused-content rules in view
A live visualizer does not change the rights status of the podcast audio. Use music, clips, artwork, and other material you have permission to broadcast, and check YouTube’s applicable copyright rules before streaming. If you are republishing a prerecorded program, consider whether the content and presentation comply with YouTube’s policies; adding a still image or visualizer alone does not establish that you have the necessary rights or resolve policy questions.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded podcast episode or playlist that should keep a YouTube channel live, StreamNeo is an alternative to leaving a home computer running. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud. It does not broadcast a live camera feed.
