Use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source to play sermon recordings in order, then loop the playlist and send the output to YouTube Live with an encoder stream key. OBS runs this setup on your computer, so the computer, media files and internet connection must remain available while you are broadcasting. For recordings that need to keep playing without a computer running at home, a cloud option is described below.
Set up an ordered, looping sermon playlist in OBS
Prepare your recordings
Put the sermon files in the order you want them to play and check that each file contains the audio and video you intend to broadcast. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. Match the VLC installation’s 64-bit or 32-bit architecture to your OBS installation. OBS lists common media formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, MP3, AAC and WAV. OBS Project: Media Sources
Add and loop the playlist
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene you will stream.
- Open the source’s properties and add your sermon files in the order you want them played.
- Leave Loop Playlist enabled. OBS documents that this setting restarts the source when it runs out of media files; it is on by default.
- For a single sermon that should repeat, use a Media Source instead and enable its Loop option.
Before going live, play through the whole playlist. Check that the transition between recordings is acceptable, the opening begins at the intended point, and there are no unwanted gaps or slate frames. Confirm that audio is audible and not distorted and that the picture fits the stream layout.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule an encoder-based live stream and open its Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream URL and key if prompted. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Start streaming in OBS. Check the Live Control Room preview for picture and sound before starting the public broadcast.
YouTube recommends starting an encoder at least 15 minutes before an event so you can check the preview. Its encoder guidance also recommends monitoring audio and video quality throughout the broadcast. YouTube Help: Stream using an encoder

Keep the local setup running reliably
With OBS, playlist playback happens on the computer. Keep it awake, leave the sermon files accessible, and keep OBS and the network connection running. YouTube advises leaving upload-bandwidth headroom rather than using all available upstream capacity for the stream; its guidance recommends about 20% headroom. For example, a stream using 5 Mbps needs more than 5 Mbps of stable upload capacity, with additional capacity available for headroom. Plan around YouTube archives and DVR
YouTube says encoder streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replayable YouTube archive matters, end the broadcast before it passes 12 hours and start a new scheduled stream; keep a local recording as a backup if the archive is important. With DVR enabled, viewers can pause and rewind a live stream, but they cannot seek to a point before the stream began. YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable once a stream exceeds 12 hours. YouTube Help: Enable DVR on live streams
Check rights and monetization before broadcasting
Clear every part of the recording
Confirm that your church or channel has the rights needed to stream each sermon recording and every embedded element, especially music, performances, photographs and video clips. YouTube scans live streams for third-party copyrighted material. It may replace a stream with a placeholder, interrupt or terminate the broadcast, or apply a claim to an archived stream. A license by itself may not prevent interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID.

Do not assume permission means monetization eligibility
If the channel is monetized, YouTube’s channel monetization policies also apply to live streams. Its policy calls for original and authentic content; repetitive or mass-produced programming may be ineligible. Reused-content review is separate from copyright permission, so permission to rebroadcast a recording does not by itself establish that the channel can monetize it. Eligible monetized channels may enable live ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships. Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads, so do not promise viewers an uninterrupted sermon if ads are enabled. YouTube Help: Monetize your live stream
Troubleshoot common playlist and stream problems
- VLC Video is missing from OBS: Install VLC and make sure its 32-bit or 64-bit architecture matches OBS.
- A sermon does not play or the playlist stops early: Confirm the file path is still accessible and the file is in a format OBS supports. Reopen the source properties to verify the playlist entries and their order.
- The list ends instead of starting again: Check that Loop Playlist is enabled on the VLC Video source. For one repeating file, check Loop on the Media Source.
- YouTube does not show an incoming picture: Confirm OBS is streaming to the stream URL and key for the intended YouTube Live event, then inspect the Live Control Room preview before going live.
- The stream is unstable or quality drops: Check available upload capacity and retain the recommended bandwidth headroom. Monitor the encoder and YouTube’s stream preview for audio or video problems.
- A broadcast is interrupted despite having music permission: Check whether the relevant rights holder has allowlisted the channel through Content ID; YouTube’s live checks can still interrupt a stream otherwise.
Other ways to keep prerecorded sermons streaming
OBS on an existing computer is a practical locally controlled starting point. A dedicated encoder or hosted playback service can reduce reliance on a home computer, but adds cost or vendor dependencies. The cited sources do not promise uninterrupted 24/7 uptime for OBS or any particular product, so decide who will monitor the feed and what you will do after a network or power interruption.
