To keep the same church YouTube live player active between loops, keep sending it a valid audio-and-video feed: leave the encoder running and make sure the loop source repeats instead of reaching the end of its playlist. If you stop the encoder, YouTube ends the feed; scheduling the next service creates a separate upcoming event, not a continuation of the old one.
Choose what viewers should see between services
First decide whether the church needs one uninterrupted live player through the gap or a separate watch page for each service. The right setup depends on whether one continuing URL matters, whether volunteers can monitor the equipment, and whether viewers should see a holding message or an upcoming event.
| Workflow | What viewers see between services | What must keep working | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| One continuous broadcast with a loop or holding slate | The same live player continues with announcements, a slate, or other approved content. | The encoder and media source must keep sending valid audio and video; the loop must repeat and the feed should be monitored. | The church wants an uninterrupted channel presence and can maintain the feed. |
| Separate scheduled broadcast for each service | An upcoming watch page, which may show a countdown or trailer, followed by the next service. | Schedule each event, share its watch page, check its settings, and start the encoder and broadcast as configured. | Services are distinct events and an upcoming page is sufficient between them. |
| Continuous feed plus separate service broadcasts | A continuing feed as well as separately identifiable service broadcasts. | More involved stream-and-broadcast configuration; verify the setup with the church’s encoder and channel. | The church needs both an always-on presence and distinct service events. |
Keep one continuous broadcast live
A YouTube live stream sent through an encoder depends on the encoder continuing to send content. YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the feed workflow. A video file ending, a playlist reaching its end, or an operator stopping the encoder can therefore leave viewers with an ended stream or offline state rather than a live player waiting for the next service.
Set up a loop that does not end
- Choose a church-approved video, announcement sequence, or holding slate for the gap. Confirm the church has the rights needed to stream every included image, recording, and piece of music.
- Load the content into the church’s playback or encoder setup and enable its repeat/loop behavior. The exact control depends on the software or hardware in use; verify that the playlist returns to its beginning rather than stopping at the final item.
- Send the encoder feed to YouTube using the channel’s Live Control Room stream key and server URL. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe entering those details in the encoder.
- Keep the encoder and playback source running through the service gap. Confirm that both video and audio continue reaching the encoder, including at the transition from the last item back to the first.
- Watch the live preview during a rehearsal. Confirm that the feed remains live across at least one complete loop before relying on it for a service.
A continuous feed can be useful when viewers need the same player URL throughout the gap, but it requires a source, encoder, power, and network connection that remain operational. A holding graphic should tell viewers when the next service begins rather than leaving them to guess.

Schedule a separate event for each service
If the services are separate events, schedule the next broadcast in YouTube Studio and share that event’s watch page. YouTube says scheduled streams may appear in subscribers’ feeds as upcoming, and viewers can select “Notify me.” This upcoming page is for the next event; it does not keep the previous broadcast live.
- In YouTube Studio, open the live-streaming workflow and schedule the service. Set the intended title, start time, and privacy setting (public, private, or unlisted) before sharing the link.
- Decide whether the scheduled watch page should have a trailer. A trailer can play on that page before the live event starts; it is a waiting-page feature, not an always-on live broadcast. Use only trailer audio and video the church has rights to stream.
- Check the selected stream key and the Auto-start and Auto-stop settings. With Auto-start enabled, sending the encoder feed can start the scheduled broadcast. If Auto-start is off, wait for the encoder preview and then start the broadcast in Live Control Room.
- When reusing settings, review them rather than assuming the new event is independent: YouTube’s reuse option copies the prior stream’s metadata, stream key, and settings, including settings that may affect how the broadcast starts and stops.
- Rehearse the actual encoder-to-event workflow with a private or unlisted test before distributing the public link. Confirm the preview arrives and that the broadcast goes live only when intended.
YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance covers scheduling, reused settings, trailers, privacy, and Auto-start/Auto-stop. For churches that need one incoming feed to support multiple scheduled broadcasts, Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API documentation describes recurring events and a 24/7 use case in which a continuous broadcast and a separate broadcast use the same incoming stream. This is a more advanced configuration; confirm it with the church’s encoder and channel rather than assuming a standard scheduled event behaves that way.

Rehearse the gap and protect the channel
- Test with the actual encoder, playback source, stream key, and scheduled-event settings the church will use.
- Observe a loop transition and the full handoff from the encoder preview to the broadcast. A still image alone does not prove the source is continuing to send a valid feed.
- Use private or unlisted visibility for rehearsal if the test should not be publicly discoverable.
- Check rights for loop videos, music, announcements, and trailer content. A church’s ownership of a recording or permission to use it in person does not by itself establish streaming rights.
- Assign someone to check the stream during the gap if the setup is not monitored automatically. A dedicated encoder or AV integrator may suit a church that needs unattended operation, but hardware cannot guarantee protection from power, network, or YouTube-side interruptions.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. This is an archival behavior, not a recommended target duration or a substitute for ending and scheduling broadcasts appropriately. See Google’s live production setup guide.
Troubleshoot an offline screen between loops
| What you see | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| The player goes offline as soon as the video ends. | The source or playlist reached its end, or the encoder stopped sending content. | Enable and test repeat behavior; keep the playback source and encoder running, and confirm a new loop is still producing audio and video. |
| The scheduled event page is visible, but the service is not live. | An upcoming watch page is being mistaken for the previous live broadcast, or the scheduled broadcast has not started. | Confirm the encoder preview is arriving. If Auto-start is off, start the broadcast in Live Control Room after checking the preview. |
| Sending the encoder feed does not start the event. | Auto-start may be off, or the encoder may be sending to a different stream key than the scheduled event uses. | Check the event’s Auto-start setting and stream key. If Auto-start is disabled, use Live Control Room to start the broadcast. |
| The wrong event or stream settings appear after scheduling. | Reused settings copied prior metadata, stream key, or other settings. | Review the event’s metadata, key, privacy, Auto-start, and Auto-stop settings before sharing or going live. |
| The loop appears to run locally, but the YouTube feed still ends or loses content. | The source may have stopped feeding the encoder, or the encoder/network path may have been interrupted. | Check the outgoing encoder preview and confirm audio and video reach YouTube throughout the transition. Rehearse on the real setup; if interruptions recur, assess the network, power, encoder, or AV configuration. |
Or let it run in the cloud
