Neither source, by itself, keeps a YouTube live event running: OBS sends the encoder feed, and YouTube’s live stream ends when that feed stops.
Which OBS source fits your church stream?

These sources control media playback within an OBS scene; the encoder and YouTube connection are separate. There is no documented universal reliability winner for continuous church streams. Test the source in the actual scene and encoder setup you plan to use. OBS describes the source controls in its Media Sources and Sources Guide documentation.
Set up one repeating video with Media Source

In the scene where the video should appear, add a Media Source and select the local video file.

Enable Loop. OBS documents Loop as off by default, so verify it rather than assuming the video will repeat.

Keep the source visible in the active scene while it is meant to play. Preview picture and audio, including the transition from the end of the file back to its beginning.
Set up a multi-video playlist with VLC Video Source

Install VLC before adding the source. OBS specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC; matching the application bitness avoids the source failing to load its VLC libraries.

Add a VLC Video Source to the intended scene and add the video files to its playlist in the order you want them to play.

Check Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist. OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default and Shuffle Playlist as off by default. Confirm both settings match the service plan: sequential playback or shuffled playback.

Review the source’s visibility behavior. Its documented default is Stop when not visible, restart when visible. If a scene transition hides the source, playback may stop and restart rather than continue through the playlist. Choose the behavior deliberately and test your scene changes.

Preview the playlist from its first item through a file transition and the end-to-start boundary. Listen for gaps, unexpected overlaps, or changes in audio level.
Keep the OBS source and YouTube live event separate
OBS sends a feed to YouTube using a stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder instructions distinguish that incoming feed from the live event itself: the event depends on the encoder continuing to send content. A looping or shuffled source can supply content inside OBS, but it cannot keep the encoder, computer, network, or YouTube service running.

In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and obtain its stream URL and key. In OBS, configure the streaming service and enter the corresponding connection details. Follow YouTube’s current instructions for creating a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Start the encoder and wait for the YouTube preview and stream health status. Check that the expected scene, video, and audio are reaching YouTube before relying on the stream.

Use representative audio and motion when testing. Choose production quality your internet connection can sustain, preview the feed, and monitor stream health. YouTube’s live streaming tips cover testing and monitoring; consult its current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for the settings appropriate to your codec, resolution, and frame rate.
For a church service, confirm you have permission for every video, music track, and other material in the stream. YouTube’s copyright policies and the rights applicable to the content determine what may be streamed; looping a file does not change those rights.

The single video stops at the end: Check that Media Source’s Loop is enabled, then preview the end-to-start boundary.

The VLC playlist does not repeat: Check Loop Playlist. Its documented default is on, but the setting may have been changed.

The same item keeps playing instead of the expected sequence: Check Shuffle Playlist and playlist order. Shuffle is documented as off by default.

VLC Video Source is missing or will not load: Install VLC and match its bitness to OBS. OBS’s requirement for 64-bit OBS is 64-bit VLC.

Playback restarts after switching scenes: Review the VLC source’s visibility behavior. The documented default stops playback when hidden and restarts it when visible; test the chosen setting across scene transitions.

The video loops in OBS, but YouTube goes offline: The source loop does not guarantee encoder or network uptime. Check OBS’s connection, YouTube’s stream status, and the computer’s encoding performance. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide addresses encoder performance issues.

YouTube receives unstable or poor-quality video: Test with representative motion and audio, check stream health, and select settings that the available upload connection can sustain. Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations rather than relying on a bitrate value detached from codec, resolution, and frame rate.
