Measure each episode, normalize it to a consistent editorial loudness with true-peak control, then audition the finished files before putting them in a continuous playlist. Keep that audio work separate from YouTube’s encoder settings: YouTube specifies transmission formats and bitrates, but the cited live-stream guidance does not set a podcast LUFS target.
What normalization can—and cannot—do
Normalization helps episodes sound more consistent in perceived loudness. That is different from matching sample peaks: two files with the same peak level can still sound quite different in average loudness. FFmpeg’s loudnorm filter supports EBU R 128 loudness normalization and controls for integrated loudness (I), loudness range (LRA), and maximum true peak (TP). See the FFmpeg loudnorm documentation.
Normalization is not a repair tool for poor recordings. It does not remove noise, fix clipping already present in the source, or automatically balance different speakers. Heavy dynamic control can also change speech emphasis and programme dynamics, so listen to the result rather than relying on a number alone.
What LUFS target should you use?
YouTube’s cited live encoder settings do not specify an integrated-loudness target for podcast audio. Do not treat −14, −16, or any other number as a YouTube requirement on this evidence.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The European Broadcasting Union’s EBU R 128, version 5.0 (November 2023), recommends average programme loudness of −23 LUFS in its broadcast context, along with Loudness Range and Maximum True Peak Level descriptors. That is a broadcast reference—not a stated YouTube rule. Read the EBU R 128 publication page.
Choose a consistent target for your own library, considering the source material, the balance of speech and music, and whether the stream has other destinations. Then test it in an actual YouTube stream. Integrated loudness is the overall level target; a true-peak ceiling is a separate limit intended to manage peaks. Neither setting alone guarantees that every episode will sound right.

Normalize prerecorded episodes with FFmpeg
1. Measure representative material
Check full episodes or representative portions, including quiet and loud episodes and transitions between them. Aim for episode-to-episode consistency without flattening natural variation or speech emphasis. Keep the original masters and make separate stream copies so you can revisit your processing choices.
2. Use a file workflow or a live workflow
FFmpeg’s loudnorm supports single-pass normalization for files and live streams, and a two-pass workflow for files. With prerecorded episodes, a two-pass process can use measurements from the source when applying normalization. A live signal cannot wait for a second pass, so use single-pass processing if normalizing in real time.

This illustrative command is a starting point, not a tested preset or guaranteed best setting:
ffmpeg -i episode.wav -af "loudnorm=I=-23:LRA=7:TP=-2" -ar 44100 -c:a aac -b:a 128k episode-normalized.m4a
Here, −23 LUFS follows the EBU broadcast recommendation; it is not established as optimal or mandatory for YouTube. The LRA and true-peak values are example parameters, not values prescribed by YouTube. Measure and audition the output. FFmpeg’s documentation notes that linear normalization can revert to dynamic mode if the measured conditions cannot meet the requested limits. Filter availability and behavior may depend on your installed FFmpeg version and build.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
3. Listen before scheduling the stream
Audition quiet and loud sections, speech-to-music changes, and episode boundaries at a normal listening level. Listen for excessive pumping, distracting jumps, unexpected silence, distortion, and differences that remain between episodes. If the processing makes a programme sound unnatural, adjust your approach and check it again rather than assuming that hitting a target number is enough.

For RTMP/RTMPS live streams, YouTube’s encoder guidance allows AAC or MP3 audio. Its advanced stereo recommendations are 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps; it recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion. These are encoding and transport settings, not a programme-loudness target. Check the current YouTube encoder guidance when configuring your encoder, as its settings page can change.

Set the outgoing audio format independently of loudness normalization. In particular, choosing a 128 kbps audio bitrate does not make episodes equally loud; that setting concerns encoding, not perceived level.
Validate and monitor a 24/7 stream
A correct filter and encoder configuration are not a substitute for checking the live feed. YouTube advises testing with representative audio and video, checking the Live Control Room preview, and monitoring the stream. Its encoder guidance also recommends keeping upload bitrate within available outbound bandwidth, with 20% headroom. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and requirements.
- Preview the actual normalized feed and listen at a normal playback level.
- Check episode transitions, long silences, and any points where playback loops.
- Watch and listen for clipping, unexpected silence, dropped connections, and changes in audio quality.
- Keep outbound bitrate within available upload capacity and leave the recommended bandwidth headroom.
- Have a recovery plan for playback or connection failures and monitor the ongoing stream.
These checks help expose problems in your playback chain, but the cited guidance does not establish a particular 24/7 playback system, hosting design, or reliability guarantee.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your normalized episodes are ready but you do not want a computer or home connection to keep the stream running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams what you upload, at any quality up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required; one free day is available per account. Monthly is $9.99 per month.
