A Pi-based YouTube streaming example published by Raspberry Pi used FFmpeg, while YouTube’s current encoder guidance sets the ingest requirements. For an audio-led show with static artwork, the practical challenge is usually less about elaborate video and more about a stable upload connection, reliable restart and reconnect behavior, and a plan for recording broadcasts longer than YouTube’s automatic archive window.
What a Raspberry Pi can—and cannot—guarantee
A Raspberry Pi can act as the encoder host: it takes audio and video, encodes them, and sends the stream to YouTube Live. Raspberry Pi’s official site described a Pi Zero and FFmpeg Docker-image setup in an article published on 30 May 2017. That is a proof of concept, not a current-model endurance test. It does not establish which Pi model or software stack will reliably sustain your workload around the clock.
Plan to test your exact setup under the conditions in which it will run. Audio capture from a live microphone or mixer has different requirements from playing prerecorded files or a playlist. Static cover art is generally a simpler visual workload than a live camera or animated overlays, but YouTube’s recommended bitrates are the official starting point—not a benchmark of a Pi’s encoding capacity.
Choose stream settings that fit the show and connection
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Its supported video codecs include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; for RTMP/RTMPS audio it lists AAC or MP3. H.264 is a straightforward choice when configuring a compatible encoder. YouTube recommends constant-bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. For stereo audio, its guidance is 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps.

| H.264 video setting | YouTube-recommended video bitrate | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | A modest visual presentation such as cover art, if it looks acceptable in your test. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | A higher-resolution static-artwork or video presentation, if the Pi and upload connection sustain it. |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | Only when the program benefits from the additional frame rate. |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | For a presentation that genuinely needs 60 fps and can sustain the bitrate. |
These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates, not total connection requirements or guarantees for a particular board. Audio and network overhead also consume capacity. Test sustained upload performance rather than relying on a one-time peak, choose a setting your connection can maintain with headroom, and test with representative audio and visuals before going live. YouTube recommends testing before starting and monitoring stream health while broadcasting. Its current encoder-settings page is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Set up the Pi-to-YouTube connection
- Enable live streaming. If this is the first time the channel is enabling YouTube Live, activation may take up to 24 hours. Check the channel’s eligibility and setup in YouTube Studio before scheduling the broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- Create a stream in YouTube Studio. In the Live Control Room, create the stream and retrieve its server URL and stream key. The exact encoder configuration depends on the software you choose; use the values YouTube provides for that stream.
- Configure the encoder on the Pi. Set its output to a YouTube-supported format and ingest protocol. Apply the chosen resolution and frame rate, constant bitrate, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and the appropriate audio codec and stereo settings. Raspberry Pi’s historical FFmpeg demonstration shows one possible software path, but it is not current guidance for every Pi or operating-system release: YouTube live-streaming made easy.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or expose it in a public script or repository. If you think it has been exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Run a representative test. Check that YouTube receives the stream, audio is clear, visuals are correct, and Live Control Room reports healthy stream status. Test for longer than a brief launch, because a successful start alone does not demonstrate continuous operation.
- Exercise recovery before relying on it. Verify what happens after an encoder process exits and after the network disconnects. Configure a process supervisor or service manager to restart the encoder where appropriate, and test how it reconnects to YouTube. These are deployment recommendations; the Raspberry Pi example does not certify a particular restart configuration.
Keep the broadcast running—and preserve the archive
An always-on stream needs more than an encoder command that works once. Check that the Pi has dependable power and cooling for its environment, that storage is not filling unexpectedly, and that the network can sustain the chosen bitrate. Prefer a stable network connection where available. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and arrange a way to notice a stopped process or a lost connection; an automatic restart does not itself prove the stream has recovered successfully.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a broadcast longer than that will be preserved in full. If you need the complete program, make a separate local recording or plan a deliberate stream break, then verify the archive behavior for your channel. YouTube’s live-stream workflow details are in its Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder guidance.
Common problems and what to check
- YouTube does not show an incoming stream: confirm live streaming is enabled, use the server URL and key for the stream you created, and check the encoder’s connection and output settings.
- Stream health is poor or the broadcast disconnects: compare actual sustained upload capacity with the video bitrate plus audio and overhead. Reduce resolution or bitrate if needed, then test again; a speed-test peak is not evidence of sustained capacity.
- Audio is missing, distorted, or out of sync: inspect the selected audio input and encoder configuration. For stereo, YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps; check the signal with representative content before going live.
- The encoder stops after running for a while: inspect process and system logs, power and thermal conditions, and storage. A supervisor can restart a failed process, but test whether the restarted encoder also reconnects and restores the YouTube stream.
- The archive is incomplete or absent: YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours. Use a separate recording or an intentional break if preserving a longer program matters.
- The Pi seems overloaded: simplify the visual output, lower resolution or frame rate, and retest. The available Raspberry Pi demonstration is from 2017 and does not identify a current model proven for your specific continuous workload.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your podcast uses uploaded recordings rather than a live microphone or camera, StreamNeo is an alternative to hosting the encoder on a Pi. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on; it supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. It is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.

Whether the encoder is a Pi or a cloud service, you remain responsible for the podcast audio, music, artwork, and other material you broadcast. Make sure you have the necessary rights and permissions; a stream key and a technically healthy signal do not establish copyright clearance.
