Sometimes—but there is no universal cheaper option. Compare your home setup’s measured electricity use and your local rate for extra power with a current cloud quote for an equivalent 24/7 workload. Include the costs and effort that matter to you, such as reliability, setup, and maintenance. Without your equipment’s actual power draw, electricity rate, and a workload-matched cloud quote, a responsible break-even figure cannot be stated.
What counts as a fair comparison?
Compare monthly recurring costs for the same runtime, stream quality, and reliability needs. A cloud hourly rate is not directly comparable to the upfront price of a PC; convert the cloud quote to a month of continuous operation and count local hardware costs only when they are incremental.
Keep the cloud service’s scope clear. A virtual machine (VM) running OBS and sending a feed to YouTube is not the same as a managed live-video architecture that also packages or distributes video to viewers. AWS’s deployment guide describes a managed architecture, and its cost FAQ explains that estimates depend on assumptions; neither is a generic price quote for an OBS VM sending to YouTube. Calculate your home electricity cost
- Measure the actual PC and other equipment while they encode the scene and stream you intend to run. A plug-in electricity usage monitor can help measure a desktop’s draw at the outlet.
- Calculate monthly energy use: average watts × 24 × days ÷ 1,000 = monthly kWh. Use the number of days in the billing period you are comparing.
- Multiply monthly kWh by the electricity rate that applies to additional consumption at your location. Do not substitute a country-wide average for your marginal rate.
- Add incremental costs only where relevant, such as extra cooling, hardware wear, backup power, or a change to your internet plan. If you already own a PC and would keep it on anyway, buying a dedicated streaming PC is not a cost you should silently assign to the existing setup.
Measure while OBS is doing the intended work, rather than assuming that a hardware encoder has a fixed energy advantage. OBS says hardware encoding can shift work from the CPU to a GPU encoding component; that does not establish a particular power saving across different systems. OBS: Hardware Encoding

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Get a cloud quote for the same workload
Ask for a quote based on the right region and 24/7 hours, and identify exactly what it covers. Depending on the service, relevant charges may include compute or media processing, storage, outbound traffic, and any reserved commitment or discount. Compare like with like: an encoder that sends to YouTube should not be priced as though it includes a separate viewer-distribution system.
AWS’s published examples are specific to their described architectures and assumptions. One AWS FAQ example discusses a 24×7 channel, but it is historical context—not a current, universal price for running OBS on a cloud VM. AWS also notes that estimates can exceed actual costs. Compare operating needs as well as the bill
Even if one option has the lower direct monthly cost, the other may better fit your requirements. Compare these factors alongside the bill:
- Encoding and setup: Can your chosen system encode the intended stream reliably, and are you prepared to set it up and maintain it?
- Connection and recovery: How dependable is the internet connection sending the stream, and what happens after an outage or dropped stream?
- Maintenance and access: Consider software updates, remote access, and the work required to keep a home PC or cloud instance running.
- Flexibility: Consider whether you may change the workload, stream settings, or operating arrangement later.
YouTube recommends choosing encoder settings that are reliable for your connection and recommends RTMPS. It transcodes incoming live streams into formats for viewers, but you still need an encoder to send the live feed. YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

Use your measured monthly home electricity cost and a cloud quote for the same 24/7 workload to decide. Add only the incremental local costs that apply, check what the cloud quote actually includes, and weigh reliability and maintenance against the monthly bill. The available figures do not establish a universal break-even point; yours depends on your system, local rate, and service choice.
