Estimate upload data separately from your stream bitrate and runtime. Upload data is not automatically an internet charge: that depends on your provider’s plan, cap, overage terms, and location.
Calculate electricity cost for a 24/7 stream
Use the PC’s average power draw while it is actually encoding and streaming—not the power supply’s rated wattage or maximum draw. For continuous streaming, enter 24 hours for each day in your chosen period.
- Find energy use: average watts × hours ÷ 1,000 = kilowatt-hours (kWh).
- Find the energy-only cost: kWh × your electricity price per kWh = estimated electricity cost.
For a 24/7 schedule, hours are 24 × the number of days. State the period and day count in any estimate; for example, a 30-day estimate uses 720 hours, while a 365-day estimate uses 8,760 hours. If the stream is interrupted or the computer is off at times, use the actual runtime instead.
Measure the PC instead of guessing
A plug-in electricity usage meter can measure wall draw for equipment connected through it. If you cannot measure, enter a clearly labeled wattage assumption and treat the result as an estimate. The energy calculation does not establish the full utility bill: fixed charges, taxes, time-of-use pricing, tiered rates, or demand charges may also apply. Estimate upload data separately
For a simple estimate, multiply the configured streaming bitrate by the time streamed, then convert the resulting bits to bytes. With bitrate in megabits per second (Mbps) and runtime in hours, a rough decimal estimate is:
Upload data (GB) ≈ bitrate (Mbps) × hours × 0.45

This is an approximation: stream settings and protocol overhead can change actual usage. Treat the result as data sent, not as an internet price. Check your own internet plan to see whether it has a data cap, usage charge, or overage fee; no universal charge can be inferred from the data volume.
Choose a bitrate and check upload capacity
YouTube’s recommended settings vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Its current H.264 guidance includes these examples: YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that every encoder or stream will behave identically. Use the bitrate configured in your encoder when calculating data volume. YouTube also recommends constant bitrate encoding and advises testing before going live; consult its encoder guide for the settings appropriate to your codec and resolution.
Your available upload bandwidth must exceed the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom, and shared network use or connection disruptions can affect the margin available. Its live streaming tips explain the bandwidth guidance. For computer streaming, YouTube recommends Ethernet and checking outbound bandwidth; download speed is often higher than upload speed. Run a speed test when the network is otherwise representative of stream conditions, then test the stream before relying on it.

Calculator inputs and interpretation
- Average PC watts: measured while streaming if possible; otherwise label the value as an assumption.
- Runtime: use 24 hours per active day for a continuous schedule, or enter expected hours if there will be downtime.
- Electricity rate: use the price per kWh on your bill or applicable tariff. The result is an energy-only estimate, not a complete bill.
- Stream bitrate: enter the encoder’s configured bitrate, or use a clearly identified YouTube recommendation that matches codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Internet plan: compare estimated data volume with your provider’s own cap and billing terms; the estimate alone does not say what internet will cost.
