How Long Can a Continuous Podcast Livestream Stay Archived on YouTube?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YouTube can automatically archive a continuous livestream that runs for less than 12 hours. If it runs longer than 12 hours, YouTube says it may not capture the stream at all. If you need a replay, end the broadcast before the 12-hour mark and make a local recording as a backup. The 12-hour limit concerns whether YouTube captures the live broadcast—not how long a completed replay remains available.

What the 12-hour limit means

YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, including encoder, webcam, and mobile streams. Its encoder guidance also says eligible streams are automatically archived and available in YouTube Studio’s Live tab. For a continuous podcast broadcast, treat 12 hours as the practical upper boundary, not a target: YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube Help: Archive live streams

In short, a stream shorter than 12 hours may produce a replay; a stream longer than 12 hours may not. Do not schedule a show to finish exactly at the boundary if preserving the archive matters.

How long does a completed YouTube livestream archive stay available?

The under-12-hour guidance describes live-stream capture, not a fixed retention period for a finished video. YouTube’s archive guidance explains that creators can manage an archive’s visibility or delete it, but does not promise that a completed archive remains available forever or specify that it expires after a set number of days. If the replay matters, check its visibility in YouTube Studio and keep another copy.

Archive, live DVR, and local recording are different

YouTube’s post-stream archive

This is the replay created from a completed livestream. The under-12-hour guidance concerns whether YouTube captures that broadcast; it does not set a retention period for an archive once created.

DVR during the live broadcast

DVR lets viewers pause or rewind a live stream while it is underway. YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. That warning concerns live viewing controls, not how long a completed replay is stored. YouTube Help: Turn on DVR on live streams

A local recording

A recording saved on your own computer or recording device is a separate backup. YouTube recommends making a local archive; it can protect you if a stream is not captured by YouTube or the online archive is not accessible later. YouTube Help: Archive live streams

How to protect a long podcast broadcast

  1. Keep each broadcast below 12 hours. End it with time to spare rather than relying on the exact threshold; YouTube says streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured.
  2. Record a local copy. YouTube recommends a local archive as a backup. Confirm your recording is running and that the destination has enough free space for the full show.
  3. For a show that must run longer, plan separate broadcasts. The duration guidance applies to a continuous stream. Splitting a longer program into separate broadcasts is a practical way to stay below that threshold, but YouTube does not guarantee a particular restart workflow will work without interruption.
  4. After each broadcast, check the Live tab in YouTube Studio. Confirm that the archive exists and set its visibility as intended. YouTube’s encoder instructions say archived streams can be found in Studio’s Live tab. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder

If the replay is missing or viewers cannot see it

  • No archive appears: Check whether the continuous broadcast exceeded 12 hours. YouTube warns that longer streams may not be captured. Look for the local recording if you made one.
  • The archive exists but is not visible to viewers: Check its visibility in YouTube Studio and change the privacy setting if appropriate.
  • Viewers could not rewind far enough during the show: That is a live DVR limitation, distinct from whether YouTube creates a post-stream archive. YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours.
