Not necessarily. FFmpeg may use less electricity than OBS in some setups, but the application name alone cannot predict the power draw of a YouTube loop. The result depends on what each program is doing, the computer and encoder, and the stream settings. To find out for your setup, compare both programs under matched conditions and measure the whole computer’s power at the wall.
Why there is no universal winner
FFmpeg reads media, processes or filters it when configured to do so, and writes an output. OBS can encode too, but it also renders and composites scenes that may contain multiple sources, scaling, and filters. Those workloads are not automatically equivalent: a simple OBS scene and a lean FFmpeg command may ask different things of the same hardware.
CPU usage alone does not settle the electricity question. OBS supports software encoding and hardware encoders; a hardware encoder shifts video encoding from the CPU to a specialized component in the GPU. OBS Project says hardware encoders are generally recommended for performance because they can encode more efficiently than the included x264 software encoder, but that is not proof that the entire computer will always draw less power. OBS Project’s hardware encoding guidance explains the distinction.
Likewise, FFmpeg is not inherently a low-power setting. Its filters, scaling, codec, and encoder choice affect the workload. OBS’s resolution, frame rate, sources, and filters can affect processing and GPU demand. OBS’s encoding-performance troubleshooting guidance describes these rendering factors; FFmpeg’s documentation describes its input, processing, and output model.

What published power measurements do—and do not—show
A study titled Towards Bridging Online Game Playing and Live Streaming measured wall power for OBS while streaming a graphics benchmark to Twitch. The authors used an AC-line splitter and a meter with stated precision of ±2.5%, sampling every 500 ms. Their setup captured a 1920×1080 benchmark and streamed at 3,500 kb/s with a two-second keyframe interval. Reported readings were:
| Study condition | Reported wall power |
|---|---|
| Game-only baseline | 157 W |
| OBS x264 software encoding, 30 fps | 250 W |
| OBS x264 software encoding, 60 fps | 244 W |
| OBS NVENC hardware encoding, 30 fps | 158 W |
| OBS NVENC hardware encoding, 60 fps | 183 W |
These are readings from that particular system and graphics-benchmark workload; the publication year was not verified in the opened paper metadata. They are not a current prediction for a desktop or mini-PC, not daily energy figures, and not a comparison of FFmpeg with OBS looping the same file to YouTube. They illustrate that encoder choice can matter, not that one application wins for your loop.

A 2024 survey, A Survey on Energy Consumption and Environmental Impact of Video Streaming, treats encoding, storage, retrieval, decoding, and display as parts of the streaming system and notes gaps in comprehensive open measurement data across device types and coding parameters. That is another reason to keep broad energy claims tied to specific conditions.
How to compare FFmpeg and OBS fairly
Measure the whole system at the wall, not just CPU percentage. A plug-in electricity usage monitor or wall power meter is optional; use a suitable meter if you have access to one. The important point is to compare like with like and record whether both configurations deliver a healthy, continuous stream.

- Match the workload. Use the same computer, operating-system power mode, looped file, resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, audio configuration, network connection, and stream duration.
- Make the outputs equivalent. Confirm both programs loop the same source and send the same intended video and audio. For OBS, keep the scene simple and consistent; avoid adding a source, filter, or scaling step in one configuration that the other does not perform.
- Establish a baseline. Record wall power while the computer is in the same idle or background state you will use for testing. Keep the display and unrelated workloads consistent.
- Alternate and repeat runs. Run each configuration more than once, alternating their order to reduce the effect of changing background conditions. Use the same duration and let each run settle before recording readings.
- Record outcomes as well as power. Note whole-system wall power above the baseline, CPU and GPU activity as explanatory clues, dropped frames, YouTube stream health, and whether the loop and reconnect behavior continue as intended.
- Choose on the complete result. A lower reading is useful only if the stream quality, settings, and reliability remain acceptable. Include setup and monitoring effort in the decision rather than treating the smallest CPU percentage as the winner.
Keep YouTube settings constant
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 input for the documented RTMP/RTMPS settings, with rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, and provides bitrate ranges by codec and resolution. For a valid app comparison, choose settings supported by both configurations and hold them fixed. Consult YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the appropriate bitrate range and platform requirements; do not compare different resolutions, frame rates, or codecs and attribute the power difference to FFmpeg or OBS.
Use representative motion and audio when checking the stream. A static section of a loop may not expose the same behavior as a busy scene, and a power result is not useful if the stream has dropped frames or fails to play as intended.
