Your compute, disk, outbound data and other billable resources must all stay within the provider’s current free allowance. For a continuous video stream, outbound data is often the decisive limit: even a low-bitrate stream can send hundreds of gigabytes per month. Google Cloud’s documented free VM allowance includes just 1 GB of monthly outbound transfer, far below what a typical 24/7 stream needs. Oracle Cloud documents larger Always Free compute resources, but capacity, region, account limits and reclamation conditions still apply.
What “without extra costs” actually requires
A free VM can avoid additional compute charges only while every billable resource stays within the applicable free allowance. Check outbound transfer, storage, the VM shape and any other resources attached to it; exceeding an allowance on a paid billing account can result in charges. A promotional trial credit is different from an ongoing free tier, and should not be treated as a permanent monthly allowance.
These are provider-published limits, not guarantees of performance or uptime. The terms and availability can change, so check the linked provider documentation and your account’s billing console before deploying.
How much bandwidth does a 24/7 YouTube stream use?
YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include 3 Mbps for 480p at 30 fps, 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. At a constant bitrate for 30 days, the approximate outbound data is:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Bitrate | Approximate transfer over 30 days | Context |
|---|---|---|
| 3 Mbps | 0.97 TB | 480p at 30 fps is a YouTube H.264 recommendation |
| 8 Mbps | 2.59 TB | 720p at 30 fps is a YouTube H.264 recommendation |
| 14 Mbps | 4.54 TB | 1080p at 30 fps is a YouTube H.264 recommendation |
These are calculations from bitrate multiplied by time, using decimal data units—not transfer figures published by YouTube or a cloud provider. They omit protocol overhead and bitrate variation, so actual transfer can be higher. Even the 480p example is vastly above Google Cloud’s documented 1 GB per month of free outbound data transfer.
What the free tiers provide—and what they do not
Google Cloud Free Tier
Google Cloud currently documents one non-preemptible e2-micro VM per month in one of three US regions—Oregon, Iowa or South Carolina—plus 30 GB-months of standard persistent disk and 1 GB per month of outbound data transfer from North America to specified destinations. Eligible free VM hours are limited by the number of hours in the calendar month. On a paid billing account, usage beyond included limits is billed. The Free Trial is temporary; resources stop if the account closes without an upgrade. See Google Cloud Free Tier details.
The transfer allowance alone makes this offering unsuitable for carrying a typical 24/7 video stream within the free allowance. A stream might technically connect, but that is not the same as operating it without extra costs.

Oracle Cloud Always Free
Oracle documents up to two E2.1.Micro VMs, or an Ampere A1 Flex allowance of 1,500 OCPU-hours and 9,000 GB-hours per month for Always Free accounts—the equivalent of 2 OCPUs and 12 GB of memory. Always Free resources must be created in the tenancy’s home region, and free shapes may be temporarily unavailable due to host capacity. Oracle also says: “Idle Always Free compute instances may be reclaimed by Oracle.” Its documented reclamation criteria include CPU utilization below 20% and network utilization below 20% at the 95th percentile over a seven-day period; A1 instances also have a memory-utilization threshold below 20%. See Oracle Always Free resources and conditions.
Oracle’s US$300 promotional credit is a separate trial offer, not a recurring allowance. Oracle says Always Free resources continue after the trial period subject to their limitations, and that one free trial or Always Free account is permitted per person. See Oracle Cloud Free Tier offer.
Oracle’s larger documented compute allowance does not prove that a particular VM will encode a chosen video reliably, remain available or carry the stream without a transfer charge. Check the transfer terms for your configuration as well as compute limits.

Can you livestream to YouTube from a free VPS?
It may be possible to send a stream from a free VPS, but three separate questions matter: can the machine encode your video in real time, can it send the stream within the included network allowance, and will the VM remain available for the duration you need? Provider free-tier figures do not establish the answer for a particular VM, encoder, video or region. No independent benchmark establishes that a specific free VM can encode a given scene at a target resolution while staying online continuously.
Use YouTube’s ingest guidance to configure a test
YouTube documents RTMP and RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS. Its settings guidance recommends constant-bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds; the guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 as supported codecs, with frame rates up to 60 fps. These are ingest recommendations, not proof that a VPS has enough CPU, a compatible architecture or adequate capacity.
Before relying on a configuration, follow YouTube’s guidance to run a speed test and a test stream with representative audio and motion. Watch stream health and YouTube’s messages during the test. Confirm actual transfer and billing in your cloud account; provider accounting and your particular setup determine whether your allowance is being consumed as expected.

How to decide whether free hosting is a sensible choice
For an experiment or a stream that can tolerate interruptions, a free VM may be useful if you understand its limits. For a channel that must stay live, compare options using the same practical criteria rather than the word “free.”
- Total recurring cost: separate trial credits from ongoing free allowances, and check what happens after a quota is exceeded.
- Outbound transfer: compare included monthly data with the stream’s bitrate and hours. At 24/7 operation, even a few Mbps adds up to hundreds of gigabytes or more each month.
- Encoding capability: verify CPU architecture and real-time encoding performance with your actual video and settings; published VM specifications alone do not establish it.
- Availability and recovery: check whether instances can be reclaimed or become unavailable, and what restart and monitoring controls you have.
- Region and workflow: consider where the VM can be provisioned, stream latency, and whether you are streaming a live camera feed or looping prerecorded video.
- Interruption tolerance and control: decide whether you can manage the encoder, VM and recovery yourself or need a hosted service for the workflow.
There is no single apples-to-apples cost comparison established for free VMs, paid VPS plans and hosted streaming services; compare the current terms for the exact configuration you intend to use.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a hosted option for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube without leaving a home computer running. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud loops the uploaded video; it does not stream from a camera.
