24/7 Livestream

How Much Does a GPU Add to the Cost of a 24/7 YouTube Stream?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no fixed monthly charge for using a GPU to keep a YouTube stream live. The extra electricity cost depends on how many additional watts your streaming setup draws at the wall, how long it runs, and your electricity rate. Measure the difference between comparable setups; do not treat a GPU’s maximum rated power as its streaming power.

Calculate the extra electricity cost

Use this formula:

Monthly incremental electricity cost = incremental watts ÷ 1,000 × hours streamed per month × electricity price per kWh.

For a 24/7 stream over a 30-day month, use 720 hours. That makes each sustained additional watt equal to 0.72 kWh per month. Multiply 0.72 by your local price per kWh to estimate its monthly cost.

Illustration: a hypothetical 100 W increase

If the streaming configuration adds 100 W continuously, the calculation is 0.1 kW × 720 hours = 72 kWh per 30-day month. At the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s 2025 annual-average residential rate of 17.30 cents/kWh, that would cost about $12.46. At its commercial average of 13.41 cents/kWh, it would cost about $9.66. These are arithmetic examples based on an assumed 100 W increase—not measured GPU streaming figures. The EIA figures are annual averages from Electric Power Monthly Table 5.3, based on February 2026 preliminary data. EIA: Electric Power Monthly

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Your bill may differ substantially. The EIA’s 2025 state averages ranged from 8.20 cents/kWh in North Dakota to 35.72 cents/kWh in Hawaii; those are dated averages, not a guarantee of your rate. Use your actual tariff, including any time-of-use pricing that applies to your stream hours.

Measure the right power difference

The relevant figure is incremental wall power: the change attributable to the streaming setup under a clearly defined comparison. A GPU model name or its maximum board-power rating does not reveal that number. The available sources do not establish an authoritative measured wattage for a specific consumer GPU encoding a specified YouTube stream, or for the resulting whole-system difference.

  1. Choose the comparison. To estimate the whole streaming setup, compare the computer at the wall in its actual streaming state with the relevant non-streaming or off baseline. To isolate a GPU-related change, keep the other computer settings and workload as comparable as possible.
  2. Measure at the wall. Use a suitable wall-power meter and record readings over a representative interval in each state. Compare like with like: the same computer, peripherals, power settings, and non-streaming tasks. A single momentary reading may not represent continuous operation.
  3. Calculate the difference. Subtract the baseline watts from the streaming-state watts. If the difference varies, use a representative average over the measurement interval and state what you compared.
  4. Apply your stream hours and tariff. Insert the measured watt difference, the actual monthly hours, and your electricity price per kWh in the formula above. For a month other than 30 days, use the hours the stream actually ran.

A wall-meter reading includes the effects of the whole power supply and system, rather than just the GPU. Power-supply conversion losses and the meter’s measurement interval can affect interpretation; there is no universal correction factor established for this scenario.

Why hardware encoding does not give a universal watt figure

Hardware encoding means video-encoding work is handled by a specialized component rather than being determined solely by the GPU’s graphics workload. OBS Project documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync as hardware-encoding options, subject to compatibility requirements. OBS generally recommends hardware encoders for performance because they move encoding work off the CPU to a specialized GPU component. That guidance is about performance, not measured electricity savings or a guaranteed power draw. OBS Project: Hardware Encoding

NVIDIA describes NVENC as a hardware encoder independent of the graphics/CUDA cores. That helps explain why maximum graphics-board power is not the same thing as power used during encoding, but it does not establish the total computer’s incremental wall draw. NVIDIA: NVENC Application Note

YouTube describes encoders as converting video into a digital format for streaming and supports software or standalone hardware encoder workflows. Its help documentation discusses GPU hardware encoding, but does not provide a measured electricity cost for a local PC streaming continuously. NVIDIA’s January 2025 vendor guidance recommends Hardware (NVENC, AV1) for YouTube with an RTX 40 Series GPU, or Hardware (NVENC, HEVC) otherwise. Should you buy a GPU for a 24/7 stream?

A purchase decision requires more than encoder compatibility. You need the card’s actual purchase price, the capabilities of hardware you already own, the desired output and workload, the measured incremental power, your local electricity rate, and a time period over which to compare costs. The available figures do not settle a personal payback calculation or establish that buying a new GPU will lower total costs.
