Yes. A TV, computer, phone or streaming box that plays a YouTube stream continuously uses electricity, so it can add to your bill. The amount depends on the playback setup’s actual power draw and your applicable electricity tariff; there is no single per-unit rate or universal “YouTube watts” figure for Indian households.
Estimate the electricity use and cost
For a 30-day month, the calculation is:
Monthly energy (kWh) = device watts × 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000 = device watts × 0.72
Then estimate the energy charge as monthly kWh × your applicable marginal rate in ₹/kWh. The examples below use hypothetical device draws and illustrative rates to show the arithmetic. They are not measurements of typical YouTube playback or claims about the tariff that applies to your home.

For another duration, multiply watts by the actual playback hours and days, then divide by 1,000 to get kWh. Replace the illustrative rates with the relevant rate for your household.

Why the bill increase differs across India
The Ministry of Power states that “Electricity tariffs in India are determined by the Appropriate Electricity Regulatory Commissions under the Electricity Act, 2003.” State governments may also subsidize some consumer classes, including domestic consumers. Your bill can depend on your state and distribution company, consumer category, consumption slab, subsidy, and any applicable time-of-day tariff. Time-of-day pricing may also matter where it applies. A June 23, 2023 Ministry of Power release summarized the amended consumer rules as providing for tariffs 10–20% below normal during designated solar hours and 10–20% above normal during peak hours. The actual schedule and implementation depend on the relevant rules and State Commission; those percentages and periods should not be assumed to apply to every household today. Use the playback draw, not the standby figure
The relevant number is the power used while the device and setup are actively playing the stream. A device’s rated power or energy label can help you form an estimate, but actual draw varies with model and operating conditions. For a closer figure, measure the setup while it is playing with a plug-in energy-use meter if the device plugs into a suitable outlet; this is optional, not necessary for the calculation.
The Bureau of Energy Efficiency’s cited UHD television schedule sets a maximum passive standby consumption of 0.5 W. That is a standby limit under that schedule, not the power used by a television actively playing YouTube, so it should not be used as the streaming estimate. What to check for your household
- Playback equipment: Identify what is actually running: screen, computer, phone, streaming box, or a combination. Estimate or measure the complete setup that stays on.
- Hours and days: Use the actual playback schedule. The 30-day examples assume uninterrupted use all 24 hours of every day.
- Tariff: Check your bill and current local tariff for the applicable marginal energy rate, slab, subsidy, and time-of-day charges, if any.
- Active use versus standby: Do not substitute a standby rating for power during playback.
