YouTube schedules when a live broadcast starts; it does not schedule different playlists to take over at set hours within one continuous stream. To change content by time of day, build the schedule in your playback software. In OBS, make a scene for each daypart and use the Advanced Scene Switcher plugin’s date/time conditions to switch scenes automatically. For one uninterrupted sequence, an OBS VLC Video source can instead play an ordered playlist.
What YouTube scheduling does—and does not—control
YouTube’s live system distinguishes the broadcast event from the stream carrying the audio and video. The event is represented by a liveBroadcast; the feed is carried by a liveStream. Scheduling a broadcast start time sets the event’s start, not a timetable for replacing the content in the feed. See the YouTube liveBroadcast reference and liveStreams reference.
For a scheduled broadcast, YouTube’s API requires a scheduled start time. The broadcast reference says that if an end time is omitted, the broadcast is treated as indefinite. Those are event-level settings; they do not rotate OBS playlists. Check the broadcast reference for the current API behavior.
Choose how the content should change
Use one VLC playlist for a continuous sequence
Choose this when the stream should play one ordered series of files, without changing to a different set at a particular hour. Add an OBS VLC Video source, select the media files in playback order, and configure its loop or shuffle behavior as needed. OBS requires VLC to be installed for this source. Its visibility settings can affect whether playback stops, pauses, or continues when the source is hidden, so test the selected behavior. See OBS’s VLC Video Source documentation.

Use separate scenes for distinct dayparts
Choose this when, for example, the morning, afternoon, and evening need different playlists, graphics, or other scene elements. Create one OBS scene per block, then configure a time-based scene switch for each. This gives each daypart its own content and presentation, but transitions may restart a source depending on how that source and scene are configured.
Set up time-based scene changes in OBS
- Install the prerequisites. Install OBS Studio and VLC. Then check the Advanced Scene Switcher plugin’s current listing for compatibility with your OBS version and operating system before installing it. At the time the documentation was consulted on 2026-10-03, the listing identified release 1.36.1, minimum OBS Studio 31.1.1, and support for Windows, macOS, and Linux; these details can change. See the Advanced Scene Switcher listing.
- Create a scene for each time block. In OBS, use the Scenes panel to add a scene for each daypart. Add a VLC Video source to each scene and choose that block’s media playlist, or add other sources and visuals the block requires. Keep names unambiguous, such as “Morning” and “Evening.”
- Set source playback behavior. Configure each VLC source’s playlist order and loop or shuffle options. Decide what should happen when its scene is no longer visible. Because visibility behavior can be configured to stop, pause, or continue playback, verify the choice rather than assuming a hidden source will resume where expected.
- Configure the plugin’s time rules. Open Advanced Scene Switcher in OBS, create a macro for each daypart, add a date/time condition for the intended time, and set the action to switch to that block’s scene. Use the plugin’s current interface and documentation for its exact condition fields; labels and compatibility can change between releases.
- Check the machine’s clock and timezone. The rules depend on the computer’s local time configuration. Confirm that its date, clock, and timezone match the schedule you intend to use, including any daylight-saving changes relevant to your location.
- Test each boundary before relying on it. Temporarily set a rule for a near-future time and observe the switch. Confirm the correct scene appears, the intended source starts or continues, and audio does not disappear or overlap. Repeat for every transition and playlist.
- Start and monitor the YouTube broadcast separately. Configure or schedule the event in YouTube Studio, connect OBS using the stream key for that broadcast, and verify that YouTube receives the feed. A successful scene switch does not by itself confirm that the encoder remains connected.
Keep the stream operating through the schedule
Time rules only govern what OBS plays when the system is running and connected. They do not guarantee unattended operation: the computer, OBS, media files, network connection, and YouTube ingest connection can all affect continuity. Arrange a way to monitor the stream and test the whole schedule for the duration and transitions you plan to use.

- Watch a YouTube preview or the live output through scene changes to catch black frames, missing audio, or a source that restarts unexpectedly.
- Check that the computer will not sleep, restart, or lose its network connection during the schedule.

Common problems and fixes
The scene does not switch at the expected time
Check that the macro is enabled, the condition uses the intended time and date, and the computer’s clock and timezone are correct. Test a near-future time rather than waiting for the next daypart boundary.
The scene changes, but the video is blank or starts over
Confirm that the VLC source points to existing media and that VLC is installed. Review the source’s visibility and playback settings: a scene change can stop, pause, continue, or restart playback depending on configuration. Test the exact transition in advance.

Audio drops out or overlaps after a switch
Check which scene’s audio sources are active at the boundary and whether the previous source continues when hidden. Adjust the scene/source setup to avoid leaving two playlists audible or neither audible, then test the transition while monitoring the output.
OBS switches scenes but YouTube stops receiving the stream
Scene automation and the YouTube connection are separate. Check OBS’s connection status, the network, and the broadcast’s stream configuration. Reconnect or restart the encoder as appropriate, then verify that YouTube is receiving video and audio again.

Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Automation does not grant permission to stream the media. Before scheduling music or video, confirm you have the necessary rights for livestream use and review YouTube’s current rules on copyright and reused content. A playlist that runs without intervention can still be subject to claims, restrictions, or monetization decisions; no scene-switch setting changes those obligations.
