YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom. There is no single bitrate that works for every Indian creator: ISP performance, location, shared network traffic and time of day all matter.
Recommended OBS settings for a YouTube playlist
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings and live encoder guidance as the reference before a long broadcast. The figures below are YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates for RTMP/RTMPS, not guaranteed settings for every connection.

For most low-motion playlists, 30 fps can be a sensible first test; that is a practical starting point, not a YouTube rule. Use 60 fps only if the source content benefits from it and the machine and network can sustain it. A higher setting is not automatically better if it causes dropped frames. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into playback formats, so you do not need to encode separate viewer resolutions.
Set the encoder and transport
- Video codec: H.264 for a straightforward SDR setup.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Protocol: RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended encrypted transport.
- Color and depth for SDR: Rec. 709 and 8-bit.
In OBS, these options are generally under Settings > Output for encoder, rate control and keyframe interval, and Settings > Video for canvas/output resolution and frame rate. Labels and available controls can differ by OBS version and encoder. Use the settings exposed by your chosen encoder, and verify the final stream in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube HDR follows a distinct HLS workflow and is not the ordinary playlist configuration covered here.

Audio settings
- Audio codec: AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS.
- Bitrate: 128 Kbps for stereo audio, as listed in YouTube’s guidance.
- Sample rate: 44.1 kHz stereo.
Choose a bitrate your India connection can sustain
The upload rate must carry the stream’s total bitrate, including audio, without consuming all available capacity. YouTube recommends at least 20% headroom. For example, a 10 Mbps video setting needs at least 12 Mbps of available upload capacity under that headroom rule; allow additional margin if other devices or services use the same connection.
- Run an upload speed test using the actual internet connection and location where OBS will run.
- Repeat at different times, especially during the hours the stream will be unattended. A brief peak result does not establish that the connection can hold that rate continuously.
- Account for other users, cloud backups, downloads, cameras and other traffic sharing the router.
- Select a resolution and frame rate whose recommended bitrate fits within the reliably available upload capacity with the 20% margin.
- Where practical, use wired networking and a reliable connection. India-wide ISP performance cannot be inferred from a single speed test or a setting recommended for another creator.
Lowering resolution or frame rate can be more reliable than running a high bitrate at the limit of the connection. Test with representative playlist content: rapid movement, scene changes and audio should resemble what the stream will actually carry.

Connect OBS to YouTube and test before leaving it unattended
- Enable live streaming early. Follow YouTube’s live streaming setup guidance. First-time live streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours, so complete it before the planned start.
- Create or schedule the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, open the live control room and obtain the stream key and server details for the event. Interface labels may change; use the current YouTube instructions for your account.
- Add the key in OBS. Open Settings > Stream, select YouTube or the applicable YouTube ingest option, and enter the stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not share it, show it on screen or publish it.
- Build the playlist scene. Add the media source or sources that play the intended videos, arrange them in the desired order, and confirm looping behavior. Check transitions and audio between files rather than testing only one clip.
- Apply the encoder settings and start a test. Use the bitrate appropriate to the selected resolution and frame rate, CBR, 2-second keyframes, and RTMPS where available.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Confirm that picture and sound are present, messages show no unresolved issue, and the event is accessible as intended before relying on it.
- Verify local recording if you need a backup. YouTube recommends checking that the archive file exists and that its size is growing. Confirm you have enough disk capacity for the intended duration.
YouTube advises setting up ahead of time and testing the stream. The OBS process, network and playlist should be monitored during a realistic test; no settings can guarantee uninterrupted operation.
Plan for the 12-hour archive and DVR limits
A nominal 24-hour broadcast has a replay trade-off: YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured by automatic archiving, and its DVR rewind guidance warns that rewind may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. Do not assume a continuous 24-hour stream will produce a complete, rewindable VOD. See YouTube’s guidance on archiving live streams and live DVR.

- If a replay or rewind matters, consider ending and starting a new session before the stream passes 12 hours.
- Record locally as a separate backup, and check the file is growing during operation.
- Estimate storage from the actual recording bitrate and recording duration; there is no universal drive-size figure without those inputs.
Copyright and playlist permissions
Only include material the channel has the necessary rights to use in a live broadcast. The YouTube Terms of Service require providers to have rights for the relevant exploitation on Google services worldwide, including music rights. Being able to watch a video on YouTube, owning a copy, or having permission to upload it does not by itself establish permission for continuous live rebroadcast.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. Depending on what is detected, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, temporarily interrupt it, or terminate it if the material remains. For licensed third-party content, YouTube’s copyright guidance says to ask the owner to add your channel to their Content ID allowlist. Resolve rights before putting a playlist on air; an encoder setting cannot prevent a copyright interruption.

Troubleshoot a stream that drops or looks wrong
