Those are different problems. A recording-format error points to OBS’s recording format, encoder, or audio-track settings; a YouTube warning points to the incoming stream’s protocol or video settings. Match the fix to the message and action that triggered it.
Identify which format error you have
Write down the exact message and note whether you clicked Start Recording or Start Streaming. If OBS starts streaming but YouTube flags the incoming signal, check the stream status beneath the preview in YouTube Live Control Room. The location and trigger determine which settings to troubleshoot.

If OBS reports an error while recording
OBS’s recording error can read: “The output format is either unsupported or does not support more than one audio track. Please check your settings and try again.” For this specific failure, inspect the recording configuration rather than changing your YouTube live-stream codec.
- In OBS, open Settings → Output and select the Recording section.
- Check the selected recording format, encoder, and number of audio tracks. If the chosen format does not support the selected combination, use a compatible format or reduce the selected tracks.
- If compatibility is uncertain, try MKV. OBS documents MKV as compatible with every audio and video encoder supported in OBS Studio.
- If your editing software does not accept the resulting MKV file, remux it to a format that your editor supports. OBS notes that MKV may need remuxing for editing; this is separate from YouTube’s live-ingest requirements.
If YouTube flags the live stream
A local recording format does not determine whether YouTube can ingest the stream. Check the service and protocol selected in OBS, the active encoder, and YouTube’s stream status. YouTube recommends RTMPS for Live and says automatic resolution and frame-rate detection is the recommended default. Its bitrate recommendations depend on the ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate, so there is no single bitrate that fixes every “unsupported format” warning.

- In OBS, open Settings → Stream and verify that the service is YouTube and that the configured connection uses a protocol YouTube supports for the stream you intend to send. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live streaming.
- In Settings → Output, check which encoder is active. Confirm that the selected encoder supports the codec and settings you are trying to use. If OBS cannot start that encoder, consult the OBS log and check the device and driver compatibility before changing hardware.
- In OBS, open Settings → Video and note the output resolution and frame rate. Unless you have a specific reason to set them manually, retain YouTube’s recommended automatic resolution and frame-rate detection.
- Start the stream, then inspect the status beneath the preview in YouTube Live Control Room. Use the reported issue and YouTube’s current live encoder settings to select a suitable configuration for your codec, resolution, and frame rate.
For scale, YouTube’s live encoder settings page, accessed in 2026, recommends H.264 at 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. For AV1 or H.265 at 1080p and 60 fps, it recommends 12 Mbps. These are codec- and format-specific recommendations, not universal remedies for a format error; follow the current guidance for the settings YouTube actually reports.
If you intended to stream in HDR
Do not apply HDR settings to a standard SDR stream. YouTube’s OBS instructions for HDR call for a supported hardware HEVC encoder, the Main 10 profile, P010 color format, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG color space. Device encoder support determines which formats are available. YouTube also documents protocol and stream-key requirements for its HDR-over-HLS setup, so do not assume that an ordinary RTMPS configuration is interchangeable with that HDR workflow. Check the current YouTube HDR live-streaming instructions for the required HLS settings and key.

If an encoder is unavailable or fails to start
Hardware encoding can reduce the workload on your CPU, but buying a GPU or capture card is not a general fix for a codec or protocol mismatch. First check whether OBS can use the encoder you selected and whether the device and its current driver support it.
- Encoder missing from OBS: Check the OBS log, supported device encoders, and current drivers. OBS’s hardware encoding guide explains the role of hardware encoders and compatibility considerations.
- Encoder listed but output will not start: Try a supported encoder already available on the system and verify that its output settings match YouTube’s guidance.
- Only the recording fails: Return to Settings → Output → Recording. Changing a live-stream protocol will not correct a local recording format or audio-track conflict.
Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Changing codecs before identifying the failed action: Separate a local recording error from a live-stream ingestion warning first.
- Forcing one bitrate on every stream: YouTube’s recommendations vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate. Use the matching current recommendation.
- Applying HDR requirements to SDR: HEVC Main 10, P010, Rec. 2100, and HDR-specific HLS requirements belong to the HDR workflow.
- Buying hardware without evidence of a hardware limitation: Check the selected encoder and logs; a protocol mismatch is not proof of a defective or inadequate device.
