Yes, You can livestream a compilation or loop on YouTube only if you have the rights needed for that use—but even a license may not prevent YouTube from interrupting the live stream. YouTube scans live broadcasts for third-party content. A match can trigger a warning and placeholder; if the matched content remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. Copyright clearance, live-stream enforcement, and monetization eligibility are separate questions.
What YouTube can do when it detects copyrighted content live
YouTube says it scans all live streams for matches to third-party content, including another copyrighted live broadcast. If it detects a match, it may show a warning and replace the stream with a placeholder. If the content continues, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. A live stream may also be terminated following a copyright or Community Guidelines strike. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.
A detected live match is not the same thing as a Content ID claim on an archived video, and the official guidance does not say that every match automatically results in a claim or strike. YouTube describes Content ID claims for an archived live stream as something that can happen after the broadcast ends.
Three separate checks for a compilation or loop
1. Do you have the rights for the intended use?
You need the necessary rights for the content you broadcast, including applicable music rights. YouTube’s livestream terms say providers represent that they have the rights needed to exploit live content on Google services worldwide, including music licensing rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. The terms also apply to archived live content under the relevant agreement. YouTube Terms of Service.

Check that your rights cover the actual recording and composition, your channel and platform, the territories where the stream will be available, live use, and any archive or replay. A license for one part of a song or one type of use may not cover the rest. The terms are not a decision about whether a particular work is fair use or whether your particular license is sufficient; confirm the scope with the rights owner or a qualified adviser.
2. Can YouTube’s live systems interrupt the broadcast?
Possessing a license does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming. YouTube advises creators who have licensed third-party content to ask the rights owner to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Without allowlisting, a live stream may still be interrupted—even if the license is valid for the territories where the creator is streaming. Ask the owner about allowlisting before going live and confirm which channel is covered. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.

3. Does the channel meet monetization rules for reused content?
Copyright permission does not by itself make a compilation eligible for monetization. YouTube reviews reused content separately at the channel level. Its examples say compilations of show moments with little or no narrative and collections of songs may fail monetization review. Examples that may qualify include clips used for critical review or edited footage with a storyline and commentary, but those examples do not grant copyright permission. YouTube says reused-content review is separate from copyright enforcement. YouTube channel monetization policies.
How the rules apply to common formats
Music compilations
A playlist or compilation of songs is not cleared merely because you assembled it, own a copy, credit the musicians, or add a disclaimer. You need rights for the music and recordings for the planned live broadcast and, if applicable, its archive. Even with a license, ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting to reduce interruption risk. A collection of songs may also raise a separate reused-content issue for monetization if the channel adds little original value.

Loops and repeated video
Looping a video or audio track does not change who owns it or what uses your permission covers. If the material belongs to someone else, assess rights for the looped live use and any archive, and check allowlisting where the content is licensed. YouTube’s exclusion of production loops and soundbeds from eligible Content ID reference files is a rule for rights owners submitting reference material—not blanket permission for creators to use someone else’s loops. YouTube Content ID eligibility.
Original work and material you are authorized to use
Owning or controlling the relevant rights makes the rights-clearance question more straightforward, but it does not guarantee that a live stream will never be interrupted by a mistaken or conflicting match. Keep documentation of ownership or permission, and use YouTube’s dispute or support processes where appropriate. If a third-party license is involved, ask the rights owner to allowlist the channel before broadcasting.

Before you go live: a rights and setup checklist
- Identify every component. List the music, recordings, footage, images, and other third-party elements in the compilation or loop. A song’s composition and a particular recording can involve different rights.
- Confirm permission and scope. Verify live streaming, relevant territories, the channel or account, and whether the permission also covers an archived replay. Do not assume a download, purchase, credit, short excerpt, quiet playback, or disclaimer supplies permission.
- Request Content ID allowlisting. If you rely on a third-party license, ask the rights owner to allowlist the exact YouTube channel. A license and allowlisting address different issues; one does not replace the other.
- Decide whether to archive. If you keep the broadcast, make sure your rights cover the replay. YouTube says Content ID claims may be made after a live stream ends when the creator archives it; a broadcast that was not interrupted is not proof that its archive is claim-free.
- Assess monetization separately. Consider whether the channel adds meaningful original contribution—such as critique, explanation, or substantive editing—rather than simply replaying a compilation. Commentary may matter to reused-content review, but does not itself clear copyright.
- Keep records. Save licenses, correspondence about allowlisting, and details of what the permission covers. If a rights owner disputes the use or YouTube acts on a match, those records help you understand and address the issue.
What Content ID reference rules do—and do not—mean
YouTube requires exclusive rights to material submitted as a Content ID reference. Its guidance excludes compilations, mashups, continuous DJ mixes, countdowns, and production loops or soundbeds as reference types. This restriction concerns eligibility to submit reference files; it does not mean every compilation or loop is illegal, nor does it give uploaders permission to use another person’s material. YouTube Content ID eligibility.
Live Content ID matching is a separate partner feature, available only to certain partners using YouTube Studio Content Manager. Its requirements include worldwide rights and exclusive ownership of the stream content. YouTube says a match may first warn the streamer, then replace the stream with a static image, and ultimately terminate the stream. These partner requirements should not be mistaken for a general rule that every creator has access to live matching controls. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.

If YouTube interrupts the stream or claims the archive
During the live broadcast
- A warning or placeholder appears: YouTube may have detected third-party content. If you have a license, contact the rights owner and confirm the channel was allowlisted; do not assume the license alone prevents interruption.
- The stream is interrupted or terminated: Review YouTube’s notification and the content that was live. Check for a match, a copyright action, or a Community Guidelines action; these are not interchangeable outcomes.
- You believe the match is mistaken: Gather evidence of your rights or the error and follow the process YouTube provides in the notification or Studio. Avoid restarting the same material until you understand the cause and have addressed the rights or matching issue.
After the stream
If you archived the broadcast, check YouTube Studio for Content ID claims or other notices. A later claim can concern the archive even if the live broadcast completed. Review the claimed segment and the rights you hold for the replay before deciding how to respond; do not treat the absence of a live interruption as a clearance decision.
Policy update and what it means for loop channels
YouTube’s monetization policy page notes that on July 15, 2025 it renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content.” YouTube said the update clarified coverage of repetitive or mass-produced content and did not change the reused-content policy. That monetization terminology does not change the separate copyright and live-stream checks described above. YouTube channel monetization policies.
