A YouTube copyright claim and a copyright strike are different actions. A Content ID claim usually applies to a video or livestream archive and may block, monetize, or track it; it does not usually affect your channel or become a strike by itself. A strike follows a valid copyright removal request: YouTube removes the content and records a strike against the channel. During a live broadcast, YouTube may also interrupt or terminate the stream when it detects third-party material.
Claim vs. strike: the key differences
| What to compare | Content ID claim | Copyright strike |
|---|---|---|
| What triggers it | A Content ID match to material in a video. | A copyright removal request that YouTube reviews and determines appears valid. |
| What it affects | Usually the matched video or livestream archive, not the channel’s standing. | The channel: YouTube removes the content and applies a strike. |
| Possible result | The rights holder’s policy may block, monetize, or track the video. Policies can differ by country or region. | The content is removed. Copyright strikes can also restrict access to livestreaming. |
| Does a claim itself mean a strike? | No. A claim usually does not become a strike just because it exists. | A strike is a separate action following a valid removal request, not simply another name for a claim. |
| Typical response route | Dispute the claim only if you have a valid basis. | Depending on the situation, seek a retraction, submit a valid counter notification, or complete Copyright School and allow the strike to expire if eligible. |
YouTube Help explains these distinctions in Understand copyright strikes and Learn about copyright claims.
What can happen while a livestream is live?
YouTube scans active livestreams for third-party material, including another copyrighted live broadcast. If it identifies material, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the creator to stop using it. If the material remains, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the broadcast. This is live enforcement; it is distinct from a Content ID claim on an archived stream.
Claims on a livestream archive
If you choose to archive a completed livestream, YouTube says a Content ID claim can be made against the archive after the stream ends. The claim’s effect then depends on the rights holder’s policy: the archived video may be blocked, monetized, or tracked, with availability varying by country or region. A tracked or monetized video may remain viewable.

When a live removal brings a strike
If YouTube removes an active livestream for copyright, it applies a strike and restricts livestream access for seven days. If the channel receives another copyright strike, the livestream restriction lasts 14 days. Three active copyright strikes can put the channel at risk of termination. These are consequences of a copyright strike, not of every Content ID claim. See Copyright issues with live streams and Understand copyright strikes.
If you have permission but the stream was interrupted
Permission to use material does not guarantee that YouTube’s live systems will recognize that permission. YouTube says a licensed stream can still be interrupted if the rights holder has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Contact the rights holder to confirm allowlisting, then check YouTube Studio’s dashboard for any strike or restriction associated with the stopped stream.

How to respond to a Content ID claim
- Review the claim details. Identify the matched material, the claimant, and the policy applied. A block, monetize, or track policy can have different effects, including different availability by geography.
- Decide whether you have a valid basis to dispute. Examples include holding the necessary rights, believing the match is mistaken, or having a valid copyright-exception basis. A credit, owning a copy of the recording, or choosing not to monetize is not, on its own, a valid reason.
- Dispute only if your basis is sound. YouTube warns that a claimant may respond to an unjustified dispute with a removal request. If the rights question has significant consequences and you are unsure, consider qualified legal advice; platform guidance is not a determination of your individual rights.
For the platform’s process and cautions, see Dispute a copyright claim.
How to respond to a copyright removal request or strike
Check whether removal is scheduled
A copyright removal request is a legal request to remove content. YouTube reviews it and, if it appears valid, removes the content and applies a strike. Some removal requests are scheduled, giving the uploader seven days to take certain actions, including deleting the content or seeking a retraction, before the strike is applied. Deleting the content after that deadline does not clear a strike that has already been applied. Check the notice and deadline carefully rather than assuming every removal request has the same timing.

Understand the available strike routes
- Seek a retraction: Ask the person who submitted the removal request to retract it.
- Submit a counter notification: This is a legal process; use it only if you have a valid basis.
- Complete Copyright School and wait, if eligible: YouTube says a strike may expire after 90 days if Copyright School is completed and the channel has fewer than three active strikes.
A strike expiring does not reinstate the removed video. For removal-request and strike guidance, see About copyright removal requests and Understand copyright strikes.
Quick troubleshooting when a livestream stops
- The stream showed a copyright warning or placeholder: YouTube may have detected third-party material during the live broadcast. Stop using the material and review the stream’s status in YouTube Studio.
- The broadcast ended and there is a strike or restriction: Check the channel dashboard and copyright notice. A live-stream removal for copyright can trigger a strike and a livestream restriction.
- You have a licence but the stream was still interrupted: Confirm with the rights holder that your channel is on its Content ID allowlist.
- The live broadcast completed, but the replay has a claim: YouTube says claims on an archived livestream can be made after the stream ends. Review the matched segment and the rights holder’s policy before deciding whether to dispute.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a cloud service that runs the stream without a home computer or connection staying on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera. It does not prevent copyright claims or strikes, so use content you have the rights to stream and resolve any YouTube policy issues separately.
