YouTube can interrupt or terminate a live stream that contains third-party copyrighted material, and a copyright removal can give the channel a strike. A channel with three active copyright strikes within 90 days is subject to termination. But YouTube’s published rules do not say that streaming for 24 hours a day, by itself, automatically gets a channel terminated; the content and enforcement history matter.
What can happen: stream interruption, strike, or channel termination
These are distinct outcomes, and one does not automatically mean the next.
| Outcome | What it means |
|---|---|
| Live stream interrupted or terminated | YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including another copyrighted live broadcast. It may display a placeholder and warn the streamer. If the content remains, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams. |
| Copyright strike | A valid copyright removal request can lead to removal of the content and a strike on the channel. If an active live stream is removed for copyright, YouTube says the channel also loses live-stream access for seven days. A further strike can make that restriction 14 days. YouTube Help: Understand copyright strikes. |
| Channel termination | Three active copyright strikes within 90 days make a channel, including associated channels, subject to termination. YouTube also lists repeated Community Guidelines or Terms of Service violations as possible termination grounds. YouTube Help: Understand copyright strikes; YouTube Help: Channel or account terminations. |
YouTube’s wording is direct: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” The 24/7 schedule does not exempt a channel from those checks.
A Content ID claim is not the same as a copyright strike
A Content ID claim typically does not result in a strike. A copyright strike is associated with a valid copyright removal request, which YouTube reviews. If the request is valid, the affected content may be removed and the channel receives a strike. Do not assume that every match, claim, warning, or interruption is a strike; check the notice and the channel’s status in YouTube Studio. YouTube reported receiving over 16 million copyright removal requests for videos in 2022. That is a count of requests received in that year—not a count of videos removed or a current annual rate. YouTube Help: About copyright removal requests.
If you have permission to stream the videos
Having a licence or other permission does not necessarily prevent an automated live-stream interruption. YouTube instructs creators using licensed third-party material to ask the rights holder to add their channel to the Content ID allowlist. Without that allowlisting, a stream can still be interrupted when the content is detected. Confirm that the permission covers the intended use and ask the rights holder to handle the allowlist request. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.

What to do when YouTube sends a copyright notice
- Open YouTube Studio and read the notice. Identify whether it concerns a Content ID claim, a scheduled removal, a completed removal, a strike, or a live-stream restriction. These have different consequences.
- Check the removal and strike details. A scheduled removal may give you seven days to act before the content is removed and a strike is applied. Follow the deadline and instructions shown in the notice. YouTube Help: About copyright removal requests.
- If the use is authorized, contact the rights holder. Resolve the rights issue and, for licensed material in a live stream, ask the owner to add your channel to the Content ID allowlist.
- If you believe a strike is mistaken, use an appropriate resolution route. YouTube lists completing Copyright School and waiting 90 days, obtaining a claimant retraction, or submitting a valid counter notification. Availability and effect depend on the case; follow the options presented by YouTube. YouTube Help: Understand copyright strikes.
- Consider a counter notification only with a good-faith basis. It is a legal process, not a routine appeal. YouTube says creators whose channels were terminated because of copyright claims may file a counter notification if they believe the claims are incorrect, and warns that doing so begins a legal process. YouTube Help: Channel or account terminations.
A platform notice is not, by itself, a legal determination that a particular video infringes copyright or that an exception does not apply. The answer in an individual case can depend on the rights, the facts of the use, the notice, and applicable law.
