How to Fix Audio and Video Out of Sync in a YouTube RTMP Stream

Find the first point where the picture and sound stop matching, then adjust the source that is late. If a webcam image trails an early microphone, for example, OBS’s Render Delay filter can delay the video in milliseconds. Check the OBS preview, a short local recording, YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, and stream playback to identify whether the fault starts at capture, encoding, or delivery.

First, identify the kind of sync problem

A steady offset and growing drift are different faults. With a steady offset, the sound is consistently early or late by roughly the same amount. With drift, sync gets worse as the stream runs. A fixed delay may help with a steady offset; it is not a reliable cure for growing drift.

  • Audio ahead of video: you hear a word or clap before the corresponding movement.
  • Audio behind video: the movement happens first, followed by the sound.
  • Drift: the two start close together but increasingly separate over time.

Use a clear event visible on camera and audible in the stream, such as a spoken word with visible mouth movement or a hand clap. Judge the recording or stream output rather than headphone monitoring alone.

Locate where the mismatch begins

Check the same test event at each stage. YouTube recommends checking the encoder, local archive, CPU load, and outbound connection when diagnosing stream problems (YouTube: Fix streaming issues).

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Check the OBS preview. If the source already looks out of sync there, investigate capture timing, source settings, and source-level delay.
  2. Record a short local sample in OBS and review it. If the preview seems fine but the recording is not, look at encoding load, source processing, and configuration. Check OBS for encoder errors and monitor CPU use.
  3. Compare with YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. If the local recording is synchronized but the preview is not, inspect stream health and the connection sending data to YouTube.
  4. Check playback where feasible. Compare public playback with the preview. If only playback appears affected, test again and monitor the stream rather than assuming a source delay is the answer.

Write down whether the mismatch is stable or grows, and at which stage it first appears. That observation determines what to change next.

Correct a steady offset in OBS

When the video is late and the audio is early

Delay the video source. OBS documents the Render Delay filter for delaying a source’s rendered image, including to sync a webcam with microphone audio; its setting is in milliseconds (OBS: Render Delay Filter).

  1. Select the affected video source in OBS.
  2. Open its filters and add a Render Delay filter. OBS’s interface can change between versions, so use the source’s filter controls rather than relying on a version-specific menu path.
  3. Increase the delay in small increments, then make another short local recording with the same visible test event.
  4. Review the recording and repeat only as needed. Keep the smallest adjustment that aligns the event without introducing instability.

When a capture device may be adding delay

Inspect the Video Capture Device source’s Buffering setting. OBS says disabling buffering can help if the device is delayed, while buffering can help with stuttering (OBS: Video Capture Devices). Treat this as a device-specific test, not a universal setting: compare recordings with buffering enabled and disabled, and keep the result that is both stable and synchronized.

When the audio is late and the video is early

The timing principle is to reduce delay on the late audio source or otherwise adjust the late side, in small increments, then verify with a local recording. The OBS documentation cited here covers video Render Delay and capture-device behavior; it does not establish a current official menu path for an audio Sync Offset control. Avoid relying on an unverified path: use the controls available in your installed OBS version and confirm the output.

Investigate drift instead of piling on fixed delay

If sync worsens over several minutes, a constant offset is unlikely to solve the underlying cause. Check capture-device timing, device timestamps, sample rates, and system load. OBS documents a Windows-only device-timestamp option intended to help prevent desynchronization, and advises matching capture settings to what the device supports (OBS: Video Capture Devices). This option is not a guaranteed fix for every device or drift pattern.

  • Repeat the test for several minutes and note whether drift is gradual or sudden.
  • Check whether the issue appears in a local recording as well as the YouTube preview.
  • Review device timing options and supported capture settings before changing them.
  • Watch CPU load and encoder status during the test.

Keep stream settings in context

YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding as encoder setup guidance (YouTube: Live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions). These are compatibility and quality baselines, not documented cures for audio being early or late relative to video. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion; obtain the stream URL and key in Live Control Room (YouTube: Get started with live streaming).

Latency is a separate issue. YouTube defines stream latency as the time between capture by the encoder or camera and presentation on the stream. Changing latency mode affects capture-to-viewer delay; the guidance cited here does not establish it as a fix for relative audio/video sync (YouTube: Understand live stream latency).

Verify the correction before going live

Run a private or unlisted test using the same kind of speech, music, movement, and capture setup expected in the program. YouTube recommends representative tests, checking the Live Control Room preview before going live, verifying local archive files, and monitoring audio and video quality during the stream (YouTube: Fix streaming issues; YouTube: Get started with live streaming; YouTube: Live streaming tips).
