You can run a virtual classroom stream on YouTube with OBS by creating a YouTube live event, connecting OBS with its stream URL and private stream key, then testing the classroom scene, audio, and connection before you rely on it. A desktop OBS setup can keep a feed running only while the computer, power, OBS, and internet connection stay available; it is not a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 service. You also need a separate replay plan: YouTube says automatic archives are available for streams under 12 hours.
Check that your channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel to livestream, and the channel must not have live-streaming restrictions from the previous 90 days. Confirm eligibility in YouTube Studio before building the OBS setup. If YouTube has not enabled live streaming for the channel, resolve that first; OBS cannot bypass the platform’s access requirements. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance explains the requirements.
Choose the event’s visibility deliberately: public for open access, unlisted for viewers with the link, or private for restricted viewing. For a class with a fixed start time, schedule the event in YouTube Studio. A scheduled stream has an event page you can share, and viewers may be able to set reminders. Avoid including student names, faces, chat, or other personal information unless your class and privacy arrangements permit it.
Create the YouTube event and connect OBS
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live, then create a stream or schedule one. Set its title, description, visibility, and any event options before sharing the link.
- Copy the connection details. In the event’s Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in a screen capture, paste it into public notes, or share it with students. Reset the key in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.
- Enter the details in OBS. Open OBS → Settings → Stream. Select YouTube if it is available, then use the account connection or enter the stream URL and stream key provided by YouTube. Labels can vary with OBS versions and connection method; use the values from the current YouTube event rather than a key copied from an old stream.
- Build and check your scenes. Add the sources the lesson needs, then arrange them in scenes. A screen capture, slides, a title card, and a microphone are common choices. Make sure the correct display or window is captured and that notifications, private messages, and unrelated tabs will not appear.
- Start OBS and inspect the preview. Start streaming from OBS early enough to let the feed reach YouTube. In Live Control Room, confirm that the preview has the intended picture and sound and that stream health is acceptable. Use the event controls shown there to start the public broadcast when ready; depending on the event setup, starting the encoder and starting the YouTube event are separate actions.
- Verify the viewer experience. Open the watch page from another device or browser, preferably on a different connection, and check video, audio, visibility, and playback before relying on the class link.
YouTube’s workflow documentation covers creating encoder streams and connecting them in Live Control Room: Set up a live stream with an encoder.

Design a classroom feed that can run unattended
Use scenes for lesson changes
Prepare a small set of OBS scenes that make sense even if no one is at the computer: a welcome or timetable screen, the lesson slides or teaching screen, and a break or intermission screen. Check every scene transition and source before going live. OBS provides the composition and switching; it does not supply a curriculum, classroom management, or student interaction.
Choose the right sources and audio
- For slides or software instruction, capture the intended window or display and close or hide anything viewers should not see.
- For a live instructor, select the intended camera and microphone sources. Speak and play representative lesson audio during the test, then listen from the viewer device.
- For prerecorded or looping material, use only content you have permission to stream. A video being available online does not by itself grant permission to rebroadcast it.
- Mute unused audio sources and check for echo, clipping, background noise, or audio that continues after the picture changes.
External equipment such as a USB microphone or webcam may help when the instructor needs to be captured, but it is not mandatory for a stream made from slides, screen content, or prebuilt scenes.
Make unattended operation realistic
OBS runs on the computer hosting it. For a desktop-based 24/7 stream, the computer must remain powered on with OBS running, and its internet connection and power must remain available. Disable sleep or automatic shutdown if appropriate for the machine, prevent unwanted updates or restarts during the planned stream, and make sure the network connection is stable. These steps reduce avoidable interruptions but cannot guarantee continuous availability. YouTube advises monitoring the stream and testing the setup, including failover where applicable; it does not establish that an individual desktop configuration will stay live without interruption. See YouTube live-streaming tips.

Set OBS quality and YouTube playback options
Start with a sustainable video setting
For H.264 at 1080p and 30 frames per second, YouTube’s current encoder settings table recommends a 5 Mbps video bitrate. It also recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and keyframes no more than four seconds apart. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that your upload connection or encoder can sustain them. Follow the current YouTube encoder settings guidance for the full table and supported settings.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- In OBS, open Settings → Output and set the encoder and bitrate for the streaming output. Menu options depend on the selected output mode and available hardware.
- Set the keyframe interval to two seconds where OBS exposes that control. Do not exceed YouTube’s four-second maximum.
- Use the video output resolution and frame rate your computer and connection can maintain. Higher resolution, frame rate, or bitrate needs more upload capacity and encoder resources.
- Use CBR for the streaming bitrate. If the connection struggles, lower the target and test again rather than keeping an unsustainable setting.
Test with the real classroom content: motion-heavy screen demonstrations, video clips, and the actual microphone can behave differently from a static test card. YouTube recommends previewing the stream, checking stream health, and monitoring audio and video quality while live.
Pick latency and DVR for the class
Lower latency can make discussion feel more immediate, but YouTube notes that it can increase playback buffering. If students need near-real-time interaction, test a lower-latency option with viewers on the devices and connections they will use. If the stream is mainly a one-way lesson, prioritize stable playback. YouTube’s live-streaming tips describe these trade-offs.

The DVR option lets viewers pause and rewind during a live stream. It can help late-arriving students or those reviewing a point, but consider whether pausing fits the way the class is intended to run. Check the event’s available settings in Live Control Room rather than assuming every option is enabled for every stream.
Use RTMPS unless your workflow needs another ingestion route
YouTube recommends RTMPS for supported encoder workflows. HLS is an alternate ingestion option for supported cases, and YouTube notes that it has higher latency than RTMP because video is sent in segments. OBS is listed among YouTube’s HLS encoder options, but that does not make HLS the best choice for every classroom. Use the ingestion method available for your event and choose based on compatibility and latency needs. See YouTube’s encoder settings and its HLS ingestion guidance.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Plan for replays separately from 24/7 availability
A continuous live feed and a complete replay are different goals. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; do not rely on one uninterrupted stream running 24 hours or longer to produce a complete automatic replay. If students need a dependable lesson recording, schedule shorter sessions that stay under YouTube’s stated archive threshold or make a separate local recording and verify that it completed correctly. YouTube’s archive guidance is at Archive live streams.

Shorter scheduled lessons also create clearer boundaries between classes and make it easier to share the right replay. A continuous stream can reduce repeated setup, but it is less suitable when each class needs its own complete, easy-to-find archive.

Run a realistic preflight
- Confirm YouTube live eligibility, event visibility, title, and shareable watch page.
- Inspect each OBS scene, capture source, and microphone; ensure no private desktop content is visible.
- Test picture and representative audio from another device, not only from the OBS preview.
- Check YouTube’s preview and stream health, and leave time to correct issues before the class begins.
- Test the actual internet connection and intended quality. Recheck after changing resolution, bitrate, encoder, or ingestion method.
- For a long-running stream, plan who will notice an interruption and what they should do. Test recovery or failover where your setup supports it.
YouTube’s guidance recommends previewing and monitoring the stream and testing the setup; it also advises, “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.” See YouTube live streaming tips.
Common symptoms and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No stream appears in Live Control Room | OBS is not sending to the event’s current URL or key, or the encoder has not started. | Confirm the selected YouTube event, stream URL, and key in OBS; start the encoder and wait for the preview. Reset a key if it may have been exposed. |
| Viewers see a black or incorrect screen | The wrong display or window is captured, a source is hidden, or a scene is not active. | Switch through each OBS scene and verify the intended source is visible in both OBS and YouTube’s preview. |
| Audio is silent, doubled, or distorted | The wrong microphone is selected, an unused source remains active, monitoring creates echo, or levels are too high. | Check the OBS audio mixer and source settings; test a spoken sentence and lesson audio from the viewer device. |
| Playback buffers or stream health deteriorates | The upload connection or encoder cannot sustain the selected resolution, frame rate, or bitrate. | Check YouTube stream health, then reduce the output demand and test again on the actual connection. |
| The broadcast stops unexpectedly | Power, computer, OBS, or network interruption; a stream key or event mismatch can also prevent reconnection. | Check the computer and connection, confirm OBS is still sending to the intended event, and follow the recovery controls in Live Control Room. |
| The long stream has no complete replay | The stream ran 12 hours or longer, outside YouTube’s stated automatic archive eligibility. | Use planned shorter streams for automatic archives or retain and verify a separate local recording. |
