Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →To play multiple local videos in sequence, add them to OBS’s VLC Video source, then separately configure OBS to output at 3840×2160 and 60 fps. The files being 4K/60 does not automatically make the live stream 4K/60: your computer must render and encode that output, and your connection must sustain the bitrate.
Before you start
- Install OBS Studio and VLC Media Player. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC, and the architectures must match: use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Have your local video files ready, plus a stable upload connection and a computer capable of rendering and encoding 4K at 60 fps.
- Enable YouTube live streaming on your channel and have access to the stream key in YouTube Studio. Treat the key like a password; anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your stream.
Add and arrange the playlist in OBS
- Install VLC in the matching architecture. If OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC. Restart OBS after installing VLC if the source is not immediately available.
- Choose the scene. In OBS, select or create the scene that should show the videos.
- Add the playlist source. In the Sources dock, click + and choose VLC Video. Name the source and confirm.
- Add the files. In the VLC Video source properties, use the playlist controls to add the video files. Arrange them in the order you want. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for that order to be maintained.
- Set end-of-playlist behavior. Loop Playlist is on by default; leave it on for continuous repetition, or turn it off to stop after the final item.
- Choose visibility behavior. The documented default for VLC Video is to stop playback when the source is not visible and restart when it becomes visible. Check the source’s visibility behavior if you switch scenes: stopping and restarting may be desirable for a fresh start, while uninterrupted playback may require keeping the source visible.
- Fit the video to the canvas. Select the source and use Fit to Screen (Ctrl-F on Windows or Cmd-F on macOS), or edit its transform to position and size it. Fitting changes how the source sits in the canvas; it does not set the stream resolution or bitrate. See the OBS Sources Guide.
Configure OBS for 4K at 60 fps
Set the outgoing stream mode in OBS, not just the source-file format. In OBS, open Settings > Video and set the output resolution to 3840×2160 and the frame rate to 60 FPS. If your computer cannot render and encode reliably at that mode, lower the output resolution or frame rate; OBS specifically advises trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working (OBS encoding performance troubleshooting).
In Settings > Output, select the streaming encoder and configure it for YouTube’s live ingest recommendations. YouTube currently supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest with H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, up to 60 fps. For 2160p at 60 fps, its recommended video bitrate is 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for AV1/H.265. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed four seconds. These are YouTube’s platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your PC or upload connection can maintain the stream. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings for current guidance; codec and bitrate recommendations can change.
Keep the output settings consistent with the chosen encoder and YouTube’s current guidance. The precise encoder options visible in OBS can vary with operating system, hardware, and OBS version. If the recommended 4K/60 configuration overloads the encoder or connection, a lower resolution or frame rate that remains stable is preferable to an unstable 4K/60 stream.

Choose a playback source: VLC Video or Media Source
| OBS source | Best for | Key behavior |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video | A playlist of multiple files | Requires VLC installed with architecture matching OBS; offers playlist order, shuffle, and loop controls. |
| Media Source | A single video file | Useful for individual-file playback. OBS documents an option to show nothing when playback ends; it is not the playlist source described here. |
Connect OBS to YouTube and go live
- Copy the stream key from YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio’s live control room and copy the key for the intended stream. Do not share it publicly.
- Enter the key in OBS. Open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter or connect the stream key using the options shown by your OBS version. Keep the key private.
- Preview the scene. Confirm the video fills the intended area, the sequence is right, and audio meters respond as expected.
- Start the OBS stream and verify YouTube’s preview and health messages. Follow YouTube Studio’s live control room prompts before making the broadcast public or starting the event.
- Monitor while live. Watch OBS for rendering or encoding overload and YouTube Studio for stream-health warnings. For 4K streams, YouTube uses normal latency rather than offering the low-latency option.
Preflight, copyright, and channel eligibility
Test the complete program
Before the event, test the playlist with audio and movement similar to the actual stream. Verify transitions between files, volume levels, loop behavior, and whether the video remains visible after scene changes. YouTube recommends testing with comparable audio and motion, then monitoring stream health and messages during the broadcast (YouTube live streaming guidance).
Use content you have rights to stream
A playlist source does not grant permission to rebroadcast its contents. Use videos and music you own or are licensed to use for live streaming, and check any applicable rights and license terms. YouTube may detect copyrighted material during a live broadcast and apply restrictions or interrupt the stream. Separately, channel monetization eligibility and policy review are distinct from whether OBS can play a file; repetitive or reused material can raise monetization concerns. Consult YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies for your channel and content.

Troubleshooting
VLC Video is missing from the Sources menu
Install VLC, confirm that its architecture matches OBS (64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC), then restart OBS. The VLC playlist source depends on VLC libraries.
The order is wrong or videos play unpredictably
Check the playlist order in the VLC Video source and turn off Shuffle Playlist if you want the listed sequence. Confirm that the intended files were added and that playback advances through them during the preview.

The playlist stops at the end or repeats unexpectedly
Check Loop Playlist. It is on by default, so disable it if playback should end after the last file; leave it on for a repeating playlist.
Playback stops or starts over after changing scenes
Review the VLC Video source’s visibility behavior. Its documented default stops playback when hidden and restarts when visible, which can explain a pause or restart during scene changes.

The stream is not actually 4K or 60 fps
Confirm OBS’s output resolution is 3840×2160 and its frame rate is 60 FPS. A 4K/60 source file alone does not set those output values. Also check YouTube’s incoming stream details; source scaling, output configuration, and encoder limitations can affect what is sent.
The stream stutters, drops frames, or YouTube reports poor health
Rendering, encoding, and upload capacity can all limit 4K/60. Check OBS’s performance indicators and YouTube Studio’s stream-health messages. Reduce output resolution or frame rate if the computer cannot keep up, and test whether the connection can sustain the selected bitrate without competing traffic. Do not assume the playlist itself is the bottleneck.

There is no audio, or audio changes between files
Check the VLC source’s audio in the OBS mixer, confirm that the files contain audio, and listen to each transition in a test stream or preview. Set suitable levels before going live; a visible meter alone does not confirm that the audience can hear the intended mix.
