Yes—if the specific VPS can encode or relay your feed continuously and sustain the required upload bandwidth. At YouTube’s recommended 4K/2160p60 settings, plan for 35 Mbps with AV1 or H.265, or 50 Mbps with H.264. YouTube recommends 20% network headroom, so those targets imply at least 42 Mbps or 60 Mbps of available upload capacity, respectively. That is a bandwidth calculation, not a promise that any particular VPS can deliver it.
A server’s advertised port speed or vCPU count alone cannot establish 24/7 suitability. You must test the actual workload, sustained network path, recovery behavior, and archive requirements before relying on it.
What a VPS must do for a 24/7 4K60 stream
A VPS can be used in more than one way, and the compute demand depends on which job it performs:
- Live encoding: The VPS receives live source footage and encodes it into the stream YouTube receives. Its CPU or GPU must process the actual source and settings fast enough to keep up with every frame. YouTube does not specify a universal VPS CPU or GPU requirement.
- Relaying an encoded feed: The VPS forwards a feed that has already been encoded. It still needs a stable route and enough sustained outbound bandwidth, but its encoding workload differs.
- Playing a prepared file: A server sends an already-made video as a live stream. Compute needs depend on the workflow; outbound bitrate and continuity remain important.
These distinctions are engineering considerations, not provider benchmarks. YouTube’s guidance describes the feed to send to its ingest service; it does not certify a VPS plan or establish that a stated number of vCPUs is enough.

Set the feed to YouTube’s 4K60 guidance
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its 4K/2160p60 bitrate figures are:
| Codec | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate | Upload capacity with 20% headroom |
|---|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps | At least 42 Mbps |
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps | At least 60 Mbps |
The 42 Mbps and 60 Mbps figures are calculated from the recommended bitrates and YouTube’s recommended 20% margin; they are not separate YouTube bitrate settings. Allow for other traffic and any backup stream on top of that margin. The listed minimums are not the recommended quality targets. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance and streaming tips.

Apply the settings in your encoder
- Choose the codec you intend to use and set the output to 4K/2160p at 60 fps.
- Set CBR and use the recommended bitrate for that codec: 35 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 50 Mbps for H.264.
- Set the keyframe interval to two seconds; do not let it exceed four seconds.
- Use RTMPS when supported, and enter the YouTube stream key in the encoder or relay software. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or include it in screenshots.
The exact control names vary by encoder. Use its documentation for the UI path and verify the outgoing resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate rather than assuming the source settings are the stream settings.
Check a VPS plan before committing to it
Evaluate the VPS against the work it will actually perform. A headline network-port speed or advertised vCPU count is not proof of continuous capacity.

- Sustained encoding: For a live encode, test the real source at the intended codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Observe whether frames are missed and whether encoder load or throttling changes over time.
- Outbound network: Verify that the provider’s sustained upload capacity and route to YouTube can carry the target bitrate with headroom. Check egress limits, traffic policies, and whether other workloads share that capacity.
- Continuity: Check provider maintenance and reboot behavior, route interruptions, and how the encoder or relay recovers after a disconnect. A successful initial connection does not prove 24/7 operation.
- Storage and preservation: If you need a local archive, confirm that the workflow can record continuously and that storage can accommodate it. YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
- Total cost: Include the VPS plan, any metered egress, storage, and the operational work needed to monitor and recover the stream.
No provider or plan can be selected as sufficient without its specific sustained performance, egress rules, route stability, recovery behavior, and terms. YouTube’s guidance does not supply those provider-specific facts.
Run a sustained preflight, not just a connection test
- Configure the real workload. Use the actual source and intended encode or relay path, with the target codec, 4K resolution, 60 fps, bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval.
- Measure the encode. If encoding on the VPS, watch for missed frames, excessive load, and throttling during an extended run. A short test may not reveal sustained-performance problems.
- Check upload headroom. Sustain the target output rate plus YouTube’s recommended 20% margin, with additional capacity for other traffic or a backup feed.
- Connect through YouTube’s preview and inspect stream health. Confirm that the incoming format and feed are healthy before relying on the public stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance covers the setup process.
- Test failures deliberately. Test encoder failover and recovery after a connectivity interruption or process restart; verify what happens after a VPS reboot as well.
- Monitor the full run. Check audio and video continuously, confirm the watch page remains accessible, and verify that any local archive continues to grow.
YouTube recommends checking preview and stream health, testing encoder failover, verifying watch-page accessibility and local archive growth, and continuously monitoring audio and video. Its streaming tips also warn that a connectivity disruption can break a stream.

Plan for the 12-hour archive and DVR limitation
“24/7” describes the intended continuous broadcast, not a guarantee that YouTube will create one complete replay. YouTube says streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; DVR may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If viewers need a replay or the footage must be preserved, keep a local recording and verify that it is being saved. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance and DVR guidance.
Breaking a long broadcast into shorter sessions may be part of an archive workflow, but test the restart and audience experience rather than assuming segmentation will produce the replay you want.

Common VPS streaming failures and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Unstable stream or dropped connection | Insufficient sustained upload, network interruptions, or competing traffic | Measure outbound capacity during the run, preserve the 20% margin plus room for other traffic, and investigate route or egress limits with the provider. |
| Missed frames or encoder overload | The VPS cannot sustain the chosen live-encoding workload | Test the actual source and settings over time; check load and throttling. Do not infer capacity from vCPU count alone. |
| YouTube reports unhealthy input | Output settings do not match the intended feed or the bitrate is unstable | Verify codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR, keyframe interval, and bitrate, then inspect YouTube preview and stream health. |
| Broadcast stops after a process or server restart | The encoder or relay did not resume automatically | Test process restart, provider reboot behavior, and failover before depending on the service; confirm the watch page recovers. |
| No complete YouTube replay | The stream exceeded 12 hours, beyond which YouTube says capture may not occur | Record locally if preservation matters and verify archive growth during operation. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on a YouTube channel around the clock, rather than encode a live camera or other live source on your own VPS, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs the loop in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. UPI works for payments in India; card checkout is available worldwide. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it is not a camera-ingest VPS or a way to test whether a VPS can encode your live source.
