Find the first place the picture turns black: your encoder preview, YouTube Live Control Room, or the public player. That tells you which part of the stream chain to troubleshoot. If the preview in OBS Studio is already black, start with the video file and scene—not YouTube bitrate settings. If OBS shows the picture but YouTube does not, check YouTube’s stream-health warnings and the encoder-to-platform settings.
First, locate where the picture disappears
Follow the video from its source through the encoder to YouTube. Check the same moment in each view and note where the image first goes black:
- OBS preview is black: investigate the selected file, playback, and scene sources.
- OBS preview works, but Live Control Room does not: investigate stream health, encoder settings, and delivery to YouTube.
- Live Control Room shows video, but the public player is black: compare the live session’s health messages and player behavior. The available official guidance does not establish one universal cause for this symptom, so use the warnings and the point of failure to narrow it down.
The phrase “black screen” alone does not identify a specific codec bug, YouTube outage, GPU problem, or corrupt file. The cause depends on the setup and on where the picture disappears. OBS’s general black-screen troubleshooting guidance is relevant to local OBS display issues, but it does not establish a single cause for YouTube video loops.
If the OBS preview is black
Fix the source and scene before changing output bitrate. In OBS, inspect the scene currently being sent to YouTube, not just a different scene or a saved file on disk.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the Media Source and active scene
- In OBS, select the scene used for the live stream and confirm the intended video file is added as a Media Source.
- Make sure that source is visible and not hidden behind another source in the scene’s source list. If necessary, move it above sources that could cover it.
- Confirm the file is selected and playback has started. If you change a source while troubleshooting, watch the preview to see whether the image returns.
- For a loop, check the Media Source’s Loop control. Also check Restart playback when source becomes active if the source is being activated again as scenes change.
- Review Show nothing when playback ends. If playback reaches the end without looping, this option can leave the source blank.
- Review Close file when inactive. OBS notes that a source may take a short time to reload after it becomes visible again when this is enabled; a brief blank during reactivation may therefore be a reload delay.
These controls and their behavior are described in the OBS Media Sources documentation. Change one relevant setting at a time so you can tell which one affects the preview.
If OBS looks right but YouTube is black
Open the live session in YouTube Live Control Room and read the stream-health messages for that session. YouTube’s health guidance covers potential configuration issues with video, bitrate, frame rate, codecs, keyframe frequency, audio, and mismatches between primary and backup streams. Do not assume every black player has the same cause; use the warning YouTube actually reports. See YouTube’s LiveStream API health documentation.

Check the encoder against YouTube’s current recommendations
YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for video, with AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommendations specify constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so select the row matching the actual output mode rather than applying one bitrate to every stream. Check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current values and applicable mode.
These are technical configuration recommendations, not a diagnosis of your particular stream. A setting mismatch is most useful to investigate when it aligns with a Live Control Room warning or with a change in what YouTube receives.

Test with representative video and audio
Before the next live session, test using motion and audio similar to the intended loop, then watch stream health and messages while it is running. A static test image or silent sample may not expose the same issue as the actual content. YouTube’s advice is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” — YouTube Help, Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions (source).
Tell a network problem apart from a black source
Check OBS’s connection indicator and dropped-frame counter. OBS explains that dropped frames indicate an unstable connection to the ingest server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Lowering bitrate may help if the connection cannot keep up, but it will not repair a file or scene that is already black in OBS preview. See OBS’s dropped-frames and connection troubleshooting guide.

- Black in local preview, without a delivery warning: continue checking source visibility and playback.
- Preview works, with dropped frames or connection warnings: investigate connection stability and whether the configured bitrate is sustainable.
- Preview works, with a YouTube configuration warning: compare the relevant codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe, audio, or primary/backup setting with the live session’s requirements.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| What you see | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| OBS preview is black from the start | Selected file, active scene, source visibility and order, and whether playback started | Correct the Media Source or scene, then confirm the image returns locally before changing YouTube settings. |
| OBS turns black when the clip ends | Loop and Show nothing when playback ends | Enable looping if the video is meant to repeat, and review the end-of-playback behavior. |
| OBS briefly goes black after a source is reactivated | Close file when inactive and Restart playback when source becomes active | Account for the documented reload delay and check whether the source restarts as intended. |
| OBS preview works, but YouTube reports a stream issue | The specific Live Control Room health message and the matching encoder setting | Correct the flagged video, bitrate, frame-rate, codec, keyframe, audio, or stream-matching issue. |
| Video is unstable and OBS reports dropped frames | Connection to the ingest server and whether the selected bitrate is sustainable | Address connection instability or reduce bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it; do not treat this as proof the local file is black. |
