Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a 720p60 YouTube livestream in OBS, set the streaming output to 1280×720 at 60 FPS, use H.264 with CBR at 8,000 Kbps, and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube lists 3,000 Kbps as the minimum H.264 bitrate for 720p60, but that is a lower bound—not its recommended target. Test your computer and upload connection before going live.
Recommended OBS settings for YouTube 720p60
| Setting | Recommended value | Where or why |
|---|---|---|
| Output resolution | 1280×720 | OBS Settings → Video → Output (Scaled) Resolution. This is the resolution sent to YouTube, distinct from the Base (Canvas) Resolution. |
| Frame rate | 60 FPS | OBS Settings → Video → Common FPS Value. YouTube’s H.264 live guidance recommends 8,000 Kbps for 720p60. |
| Encoder | H.264 | H.264 is the codec used for the bitrate recommendation here. YouTube also supports H.265 (HEVC) and AV1, whose bitrate recommendations differ. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies constant bitrate. |
| Video bitrate | 8,000 Kbps recommended; 3,000 Kbps minimum | YouTube Help’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, gives these H.264 720p60 values. Going below the recommendation may reduce image quality; the minimum is not the target for best results. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Protocol | RTMPS | YouTube recommends secure RTMPS for ingest. |
| Audio codec and format | AAC or MP3; stereo at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz | YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as accepted RTMP/RTMPS audio codecs; its advanced guidance lists 128 Kbps stereo and a 44.1 kHz stereo sample rate. |
These are YouTube’s H.264 ingest recommendations for the stated resolution and frame rate, not a guarantee that every computer or connection can sustain them.
Set resolution and frame rate in OBS
- Open Settings → Video. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720. This controls the stream output. You can leave Base (Canvas) Resolution at the resolution used to arrange your sources; OBS scales the canvas to the output.
- Under Common FPS Value, choose 60. OBS cautions that 60-fps streaming can put more load on a computer than 30 FPS, so verify performance with a test stream.
- Click Apply, then OK.
If the computer cannot render 60 FPS reliably, investigate system load and consider 30 FPS rather than assuming that lowering resolution alone will solve the problem. The available guidance does not establish one universally best encoder choice for every machine.
Set the encoder, bitrate, and keyframes
- Open Settings → Output and select the Streaming section.
- Choose an H.264 streaming encoder compatible with your computer. The right available encoder depends on your hardware; there is no single hardware encoder recommendation that applies to all systems.
- Set Rate Control to CBR and Bitrate to 8000 Kbps. If your connection cannot sustain the total outgoing stream bitrate, YouTube’s stated H.264 720p60 minimum is 3000 Kbps; reducing bitrate can lower image quality.
- Set Keyframe Interval to 2 seconds. Do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Configure audio for an accepted codec, AAC or MP3. YouTube’s advanced guidance lists stereo at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz.
- Click Apply and OK.
OBS labels and available encoder choices can vary by version and hardware. The key requirements for this setup are the output format, rate control, bitrate, and keyframe interval; avoid selecting an encoder preset based on advice for a different computer without checking its performance.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Live Control Room, prepare the broadcast and connect OBS using the stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or show it on screen.
- Use YouTube’s automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. If you manually select the stream resolution, YouTube says to create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution.
- Use RTMPS where the connection option is available, in line with YouTube’s recommendation.
- Start a test stream and confirm that YouTube receives the intended resolution and frame rate before the real event.
Check bandwidth and test before going live
The connection must carry the combined outgoing video and audio bitrate, with enough stability to avoid interruptions. YouTube Help says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” A speed-test result is a useful check, but a test stream is also important because real-world stability and computer load affect the broadcast.
- Run a test with movement and audio similar to the actual stream, not just a static screen.
- Check YouTube’s stream health messages while OBS is sending video.
- Watch for dropped or skipped frames and signs that the computer is overloaded; 60 FPS is more demanding than 30 FPS.
- If the stream stutters or disconnects, check system load and upload stability before treating 720p resolution itself as the cause.
OBS’s official guide explains output scaling, frame rate, and streaming bitrate at OBS Studio Overview Guide. YouTube’s encoder values and test advice are in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions; network preparation guidance is in Streaming tips.

Troubleshoot common 720p60 problems
YouTube reports an unstable or insufficient stream
Check whether the upload connection can sustain the combined audio and video bitrate. Re-run an upload speed test and monitor YouTube’s stream health during a representative test. If needed, reduce bitrate while understanding that lower bitrate can reduce image quality; do not treat the 3,000 Kbps minimum as the recommended quality target.
Frames stutter or OBS cannot keep up
Check computer load and encoder performance. Since OBS notes that 60 FPS can be more taxing than 30 FPS, test the same content at 30 FPS if the machine cannot reliably render 60. Choose an encoder compatible with your hardware rather than assuming a particular vendor’s encoder is available.

The broadcast does not match the intended resolution
Confirm OBS’s Output (Scaled) Resolution is 1280×720; changing only the Base (Canvas) Resolution does not set the stream output. In YouTube Live Control Room, leave automatic detection on unless manual selection is needed. For manual selection, use a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution.
The stream is connected but looks poor
Verify that OBS is actually outputting 1280×720 at 60 FPS and that the H.264 bitrate is appropriate for the upload connection. A bitrate below YouTube’s 8,000 Kbps recommendation may constrain image quality; raising it is not a fix if the connection cannot sustain the total bitrate.
