For a prerecorded event replay, start with 1080p at 30 fps, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, RTMPS, and normal latency. Set the bitrate to a level your upload connection can sustain without interruption, then test the full loop and monitor YouTube’s stream health. The biggest catch is archiving: YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so use shorter broadcasts and a local recording if preserving the full replay matters.
Recommended OBS settings at a glance
| Setting | Starting choice | When to change it |
|---|---|---|
| Output resolution | 1920×1080 | Use a lower output if the source is lower resolution or your upload cannot reliably sustain the required bitrate. Do not upscale expecting additional detail. |
| Frame rate | 30 fps | Use 60 fps when the replay contains motion that benefits from it and your connection can sustain the higher bitrate. |
| Rate control | CBR | Keep the bitrate consistent for a live broadcast. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Protocol | RTMPS | Use it where available; YouTube recommends it because stream data is encrypted into and through Google’s servers. |
| Latency | Normal | Choose lower latency only when interaction needs it and you accept potential buffering or feature limits. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3; stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps | Check for continuous, audible sound and clean transitions where the replay loops. |
These are starting points, not a guarantee of identical quality on every connection or encoder. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists the following ingestion bitrate recommendations by output and codec. Treat the recommended rate as a target only if your sustained upload supports it; YouTube also lists minimum rates, shown here for context.
| Output | AV1 / H.265 recommended | AV1 / H.265 minimum | H.264 recommended | H.264 minimum |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps | not stated | 8 Mbps | not stated |
| 720p60 | 6 Mbps | not stated | 8 Mbps | not stated |
Bitrate figures are YouTube platform recommendations, not promises of a particular visual result. Check YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance before a broadcast because platform recommendations can change.
Set up OBS for the replay
1. Match the output to the source
In OBS, the base (canvas) resolution is the workspace where you arrange sources; the output (scaled) resolution is what OBS sends to YouTube. Start at 1920×1080 if the replay has that detail and your connection can carry its bitrate. Keep the source aspect ratio intact, then preview the output for cropping or black bars. A lower-resolution source does not gain real detail when enlarged. See the OBS overview for the distinction between canvas and output settings.

2. Choose frame rate and encoder
For a mostly static replay, 30 fps is usually a sensible starting point. A 60 fps output can suit footage with motion, but it needs more bitrate than 30 fps at the same resolution. H.264 is a broadly applicable codec; YouTube also documents H.265/HEVC and AV1. Which options appear depends on your encoder and hardware. For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) and says AV1 is not supported for HDR.
3. Set CBR, keyframes, and RTMPS
In OBS’s streaming output settings, select CBR, set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, and choose RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Verify the selected service and server settings in OBS against the stream configuration shown in YouTube Studio.

4. Configure audio and check the loop point
YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS. Its stereo audio guidance lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Confirm that the replay’s audio is not muted or clipped and that the end-to-start transition does not introduce an unintended pause, click, or silence. A loop that looks seamless in a media player still needs to be checked in the live output.
Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain
Use the codec-specific YouTube recommendation as a ceiling target, not a requirement to force onto an unstable connection. Test your sustained upload and choose an output quality that remains reliable. OBS explains that dropped frames mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate. Its troubleshooting guidance suggests 75% of total upload as a starting point, but that is a rough troubleshooting rule—not a universal guarantee. Other network use, service limits, and upload fluctuations matter.

- If OBS drops frames, lower the bitrate before increasing resolution or frame rate.
- Choose the highest resolution and frame rate your connection can sustain consistently, rather than the highest setting OBS permits.
- Test over the same network path and at a representative time of day if possible; a brief speed test does not establish sustained streaming stability.
YouTube’s advice on recommended upload speeds and OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide both emphasize testing and connection stability.
Set YouTube’s broadcast controls for an unattended replay
Latency: choose normal unless interaction requires less delay
Normal latency is the safer default for a replay without real-time interaction because it favors a larger playback buffer. Lower latency can increase buffering or affect smoothness. Ultra-low latency excludes resolutions above 1080p and closed captions, so it is not a good default when those matter. YouTube explains the trade-offs in its latency settings guidance.

DVR: useful, but not a complete archive plan
Enable DVR if viewers should pause or rewind during the live event. It does not guarantee unlimited rewind, and YouTube warns that DVR may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. Treat DVR as a live-viewing control, not as the only way to preserve the replay.
Auto-start, auto-stop, and reconnection
Auto-start can begin the broadcast when the encoder connects. Auto-stop can end it after the source stops. For a looping stream, a brief interruption could trigger an unwanted end, so test how your scheduled broadcast behaves after a disconnect and reconnect. Decide whether the event should resume automatically or wait for a manual check. YouTube documents broadcast controls in its LiveBroadcasts API reference; controls shown in Studio can vary by account and interface.

Visibility and audience
Run an unlisted test before going public. For the actual event, set visibility and the audience declaration accurately for the content. Confirm the current choices in YouTube Studio before each broadcast; account options and labels can vary. The OBS Project’s YouTube streaming guide describes a scheduled-broadcast workflow, but community-maintained interface instructions may age.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan for the 12-hour archive limit
A single continuous 24-hour broadcast is not a dependable way to create a complete YouTube replay. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its DVR guidance separately says rewind may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. If the complete recording is important, break the broadcast into segments below the 12-hour boundary and record locally as a backup. Check YouTube’s current behavior before relying on either an archive or DVR for a long event.
The relevant platform guidance is Archive live streams and DVR settings. Recording-from-start or archive-related API settings do not remove the Help Center’s warning for streams over 12 hours.
Preflight: test the complete broadcast before launch
- Make an unlisted test. Use representative footage, motion, and audio rather than a short static placeholder.
- Watch from another device and network. Check framing, sound, playback quality, buffering, and the loop transition.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Review stream health and diagnostic messages; YouTube describes its indicators in stream health monitoring.
- Test failure recovery. Confirm what happens when the source loops, the connection briefly drops, OBS reconnects, or the computer restarts.
- Protect the recording. If a complete replay matters, keep a local recording and avoid relying on a single stream longer than 12 hours.
Troubleshooting common 24/7 replay problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames in OBS | Unstable upload or bitrate beyond what the connection can sustain. | Lower the bitrate, retest sustained upload, and check whether another network path or ingest server is more stable. |
| Viewers see buffering | Connection instability or a latency choice that does not suit the stream. | Try normal latency and test playback from a separate network; lower bitrate if upload is unstable. |
| Picture is cropped or has bars | Canvas, output resolution, or source aspect ratio do not match. | Preserve the source aspect ratio, review the OBS preview, and adjust canvas/output settings without stretching the image. |
| Audio vanishes or clicks at the loop | Muted or misrouted audio, or a discontinuity at the replay boundary. | Check OBS audio meters and routing, then listen to a complete loop in the unlisted test. |
| Broadcast ends after a short interruption | Auto-stop or the scheduled-broadcast workflow may treat the source stopping as the end of the event. | Test reconnect behavior; reconsider auto-stop and decide whether a manual review is needed before resuming. |
| No complete archive after a long broadcast | YouTube may not capture streams that exceed 12 hours; DVR may also be constrained. | Use shorter segments and a local recording when the full replay must be preserved. |
