Best OBS Settings for YouTube Live on Limited Upload Speed in India

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For YouTube Live on a limited connection, choose OBS settings your upload can sustain—not the maximum resolution your PC can produce. Measure upload speed near stream time, leave headroom for network variation and other household use, then set a bitrate and resolution that fit. For many constrained connections, 720p30 or 720p60 is a better starting point than 1080p60; verify it with a test stream before going live.

Start with a bitrate your connection can sustain

Use measured upload speed, not download speed or the advertised maximum on an internet plan. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and testing the stream before the event. OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for stream bitrate, but this is a rule of thumb, not a stability guarantee. Leave additional room for other devices and fluctuations.

For example, if your stable measured upload is 6 Mbps, 75% is 4.5 Mbps. That makes trying a 4 Mbps H.264 stream more plausible than aiming for YouTube’s 8 Mbps recommendation for 720p. This is an arithmetic example, not a promise that every 6 Mbps connection can sustain that stream. [OBS connection troubleshooting; YouTube encoder settings]

Recommended ingest bitrates by output

YouTube’s published figures below are recommended encoder bitrates, not minimum internet-plan speeds. The minimums are included for context; meeting a minimum does not guarantee good picture quality or a stable stream. Use the column that matches your encoder codec.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

Output target H.264 recommended AV1/H.265 recommended H.264 minimum AV1/H.265 minimum
480p30 4 Mbps 3 Mbps 0.4 Mbps 0.3 Mbps
720p30 8 Mbps 6 Mbps 3 Mbps 2 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps 6 Mbps 3 Mbps 2 Mbps
1080p30 14 Mbps 10 Mbps 5 Mbps 4 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps 12 Mbps 6 Mbps 4 Mbps

These are YouTube’s current published encoder figures, accessed 2026-10-03. If your sustainable budget is below a recommended target, do not raise bitrate beyond what the connection can carry to chase quality. Try a lower resolution or 30 fps. Fast gameplay may benefit more from 60 fps; a lecture, talking head, or slide presentation may be acceptable at 30 fps.

Set the OBS streaming options

In OBS, open Settings → Output → Streaming. Use these baseline encoder settings, then match bitrate to your upload budget and codec to the relevant YouTube column.

  • Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS.
  • Video codec: H.264 is a broadly compatible baseline. If your selected encoder offers H.265/HEVC or AV1, use the corresponding YouTube bitrate guidance.
  • Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3; its guidance specifies 128 kbps for stereo audio.

Available codec choices depend on the encoder you select. Do not apply H.264 bitrate figures to an AV1 or H.265 stream, or vice versa. YouTube’s official guidance is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Choose resolution and frame rate for Indian internet conditions

There is no single upload speed or ISP setting that applies across India. Your usable upload can vary by service, location, time of day, Wi-Fi conditions, and other active devices. Choose based on a test of your own connection near the time you expect to stream.

  • Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Limited or variable upload: Try 480p30 or 720p30 at a bitrate within your safe budget.
  • More motion, if the connection supports it: Test 720p60. It has the same listed recommended bitrate as 720p30 in YouTube’s table, but the extra frame rate is useful chiefly when the content has fast motion.
  • 1080p: Use only if your measured upload can sustain the relevant bitrate with headroom. In particular, do not default to 1080p60 on a limited connection.

Resolution, frame rate, codec, and stability all affect the result. A higher resolution is not automatically better if viewers experience buffering or the stream drops frames. For screen sharing or a mostly static scene, 30 fps may be a reasonable trade-off; for fast gameplay, frame rate may matter more.

Measure, configure, and test before going live

  1. Measure upload: Run a speed test on the same connection, preferably near the time of day you plan to stream. Focus on upload, not download.
  2. Set a cautious bitrate budget: Use 75% of measured total upload as an OBS starting point, while allowing for other household traffic and variation. Treat it as an initial ceiling to test, not a guarantee.
  3. Pick a target: Choose a resolution and frame rate whose codec-specific YouTube recommended bitrate fits at or below that budget. If none fits comfortably, step down in resolution or use 30 fps.
  4. Configure OBS: Apply CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, RTMP/RTMPS, and the chosen codec in Settings → Output → Streaming.
  5. Run a private or unlisted test: Include representative movement and audio, as YouTube recommends. Review YouTube stream health and OBS dropped frames before your public event.
  6. Adjust based on evidence: If frames drop or stream health is poor, lower the video bitrate first; if necessary, lower resolution or frame rate and test again.

YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and testing before starting a live stream: YouTube Help.

Fix dropped frames and unstable streams

OBS defines dropped frames as a connection that is unstable or unable to keep up with the configured bitrate. Enough dropped frames can disconnect a stream. Change one factor at a time and retest so you can tell whether the adjustment helped.

Symptom or situation What to try
OBS reports dropped frames Lower the video bitrate and test again. If it persists, reduce resolution or frame rate.
Wi-Fi stream is inconsistent If practical, connect the streaming computer to the router by Ethernet. OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming.
Wired connection still drops frames Check the modem, router, network cable, network card, and other network devices. Ask your ISP for help if the issue may be with capacity or routing before replacing hardware.
Congestion comes and goes On Windows, OBS documents Network Optimizations and TCP pacing. Dynamic Bitrate Adjustment (Beta) can lower bitrate during congestion rather than dropping frames, but it reduces image quality and does not fix the underlying connection.
A different ingest route may help Try a different server if one is available in your setup, then compare dropped frames and stream health in a representative test.

An Ethernet cable can address instability between your computer and router; it cannot increase your ISP’s upload capacity or fix congestion outside your home network. OBS’s documented options and connection guidance are in its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide. Network Optimizations and TCP pacing are Windows options, not settings available on every operating system.
